Sweet sleepers

We had to change Eve’s sheets last night so I put her on Lex’s bed to wait. She snuggled right up to him and he didn’t seem to notice. They were so sweet looking that we decided to leave them there for the night.

Sweet sleepers

Eve, apparently, woke up first and climbed back into her own bed for a few minutes, then they both got up. Lex said he didn’t even know Eve slept with him all night.

Kids and such

Today I am thankful for a peaceful afternoon with my lovies. They did their chores without fuss, we baked cookies and read stories, and we even did some tidying to prep for holiday decorations this weekend. We’re starting to get in the ho.ho.holiday spirit!

I also learned today that kindergarten is where it’s at. I subbed in 4th and 5th on Tuesday (half day in each grade) and it was ok, but not entirely fun. The kids were wild, especially the 5th grade, and showed no respect… because, well, it was my 2nd day subbing and I’m sure I wasn’t the most confident! However, kindergarten is right up my alley! The kids were great all day. One little girl kept calling me Tessa (I’ve known her for years) and the rest called me Eve’s Mom. By the end of the day I had most of them corrected. We had a fire drill and they stood in a line between two fifth grade classes and the kindergartens were quiet and still the entire time while the 5th graders jumped around and chatted. I was sure to compliment my class on their excellent fire drill behavior when we got back inside.

I’m trying to find some balance in life though, between subbing and my other part-time job and volunteering and household maintenance and holiday prep. All efforts at weight management have gone out the window and my social life has all but vanished… except for tomorrow night when we’re having two couples and their kids over for dinner! I turned down sub requests (twice!) for tomorrow because I have to clean and shop so I can be ready for dinner company! Good times, good times!

My geeky kids

Today I am thankful for my geeky kids. While others are playing video games and chugging diet coke, mine are conducting science experiments on liquid densitys and building everything out of paper and Legos. Some may call them deprived (What? Can kids survive today without video games and cable TV?!?), but I call them geniuses!! Maybe I’m just a little biased.

The neighbor came over and they all got a little crazy with their additions. They both ended up with pretty full cups and I think the experiment went from learning to just plain silly.

On to another day. Lex got a pen light from Grandpa and was thrilled! That same day he also discovered a use for the breast pocket on his PJs. :)

lex

Nerd alert! :)

After quiet time I asked him if he was going to draw Transformers all afternoon, as he had all morning. He replied with, “Actually, I might spend the rest of the day building a Lego stationery case so I don’t have to put all of this in my pocket.” This amuses me on many levels. One, because he said “stationery case” instead of pencil box or something more basic. And two, because he said “so I don’t have to,” as though there was any good reason that he DID have to carry a pen, a pencil, a pen light, and two pins in/on his PJ pocket. Like those were necessary tools for a Saturday afternoon and his day would just be easier if he had a Lego stationery case. Funny boy. He ended up drawing Transformers all day anyway. I guess the stationery kit will have to be a project for another day.

Scrabble

Today’s craft project. Take one game of Scrabble (from freecycle!) and one sheet of magnet paper. Cut paper into small squares. Enlist two children to peel off the backing and stick magnets to Scrabble tiles. Put on fridge. Spell away!

Scrabble on the fridge. Fun for all!

Want to hear something sad? The kids have no memory of those letter magnets we used to have. Want to hear something happy? Watch the videos below! They are hysterical!

I found them here while I was searching the blog for a picture of the letter magnets to show the kids. I’ll show them the videos in the morning. I’m sure it will refresh their memories. Lex is about two and a half in these videos.

Roller skating

When the family is in town we like to hit up the local roller skating rink. This time Alan, Rosy, and Joyce joined us!

e&J

Joyce taught Eve some of her mad skills. Well, she tried. Eve is still working on the basics.

Baby came too. This was my baby when I was a baby!

Rosy and Lex. Lex was working on speed, but probably should have been working on balance! He took many more tumbles than usual.

Joyce, crouching and skating backwards while taking pictures. What can’t she do on skates?! :)

Eve is more interested in conversation then refining her skating skills. They look like they’re out for a walk on a lovely day.

Telling the kids

I told the kids about Grandma yesterday after school. Lex was already grumpy (long, busy day at school) and when I said I had something to tell them he scooted off my lap and under the coffee table, insisting he did not want to hear. I told Eve, who was still snuggling on my lap. I asked Lex if that’s what he was expecting and he said yes, then grabbed a book and zipped upstairs. Eve snuggled for a bit then made an X with her fingers and said we should “put an X on thinking about sad things.” After a few more minutes I got up to go check on Lex (he was lost in his book) and Eve drew this on the white board.  She also took the picture for me. :)

On the left is what not to think about – people dying. On the right is what we should be thinking about – hugging fluffy bunnies. She is so sweet.

May peace be with you

Today I am thankful for peaceful passings. If you have to go, and we all will someday, at home and surrounded by family is the way to be.

Grandma died today. Heart and kidney failure. She chose hospice care instead of hospital procedures and she died at home, at peace, and holding Grandpa’s hand. I think it was the best possible way to go, but she will be missed dearly.
