The Eve Effect
Have I written here before about the effect Eve has on her friends and classmates? She has a magnetism that draws all to her and since they are in kindergarten and haven’t quite figured out sharing, turn taking, and social status, they all fight over her! Seriously. I’ve seen it with my own eyes. Children crying to sit next to Eve. Grabbing her arms, arguing over who gets to be near her. It’s weird. I witnessed it a few times in school and asked her teacher awhile back if this is normal behavior or if it only happens when I’m around. She said it happens pretty regularly. Eve says she doesn’t like it and we’ve talked about ways she can be firm and tell people to let go of her arm and walk away. But these are her friends and she wants to sit with them all so it leaves her in an odd situation. I don’t think it really bothers her much though, because she never tells me about it unprompted and when she does talk about it she does so with humor in her voice.
Her teacher told me a few days ago that a bunch of them were crying at lunch over who gets to sit by her (which is just kindergarten nonsense because her whole class practically fits at one table so it’s not like anyone is very far from her!) and the teachers ended up doing assigned seating at lunch for a few days! That was the consequence for the silly arguing. Eve didn’t mention it until I asked her though. When I asked who she was assigned to sit next to, it turns out it was none of the crying kids. She’s so sweet and everyone is her friend so she was perfectly happy sitting next to the kids she was assigned to sit by.
It will be interesting watching her grow up. One of the most amazing parts of parenting is just watching them become people. Watching how they grow: physically, emotionally, and socially. I’m lucky to have two such different, yet equally strong and confident kids to keep me company in life. :)
Nice save!
Eve made a great while playing goalie at soccer practice this week. Everyone cheered for her. The bast part though, is that she takes no credit for it. As she tells the story, with great enthusiasm, “Nick kicked the ball right at my leg and it bounced off!!! Isn’t that so funny?!”.
The next day she drew a picture of the event at school.
Eve’s missing teeth
A few weeks ago the kids went to the dentist for their regular cleanings. Eve had no missing teeth and no wiggly teeth, but upon looking at her x-ray the dentist said her big teeth are “right there” and ready to come through at any time. We left with instructions to call him if big teeth poked through before little ones fell out.
Well, of course, they did! This past Sunday Eve said she thought maybe a new tooth had come in. Sure enough, she had a big tooth poking through behind her little ones!
I called the dentist and scheduled an appointment to have her four front teeth removed, something we’d discussed at the last appointment. It sounds scary, but I think it makes the most sense to get them out so the big teeth can grow in as straight as possible. Hopefully!
Today was the day. You know it’s urgent when they’re booking routine visits six months out, but manage to find time for you in two short days. Most mornings I’m dragging Eve out of bed at 7:00am and forcing breakfast into her before school. This morning, when she has no school and isn’t allowed breakfast, she’s wide awake at 6:00am! Of course. Alan took Lex to school and Eve and I headed to the dentist.
She was SO BRAVE!! She got shy and quiet when they called her, then stuck to me like glue for a few minutes in the dentist’s room, but she settled quickly and barely flinched when they took out those tiny teeth! She just had nitrous oxide and novicane, not Valium (like Lex had when he lost his first tooth to the dentist as well!) Since she was older and calmer they didn’t think the Valium was necessary. She was a champ through the whole process. Laughing and chatting. When we got in the car at the end, her mouth full of gauze, she started crying again. We cuddled for a few minutes, then headed home and cuddled on the couch for a bit, changing the gauze frequently. An hour later she said she was hungry so we got up and she’s been going ever since! She had pudding and a soft PB&J. We played outside, played a few board games, read some stories. She’s having quiet time now and I keep asking if she’s tired and wants a nap, but “No!” is all I hear.
I wasn’t exactly sure what to expect for recovery. Lex was four and had Valium so he slept a lot of the afternoon after his procedure. I remember sleeping a lot after I had teeth pulled, but I know I had general anaesthesia for that procedure. I guess she didn’t have any drugs that require serious recovery. I’m glad for that! I love seeing her up and grinning so fast. I’ll post a picture later when things are a little more healed up, but there is no way four grown-up teeth are going to fit into the spot that opened up today. She’ll be lucky to get two teeth in that hole! I think both kids inherited my small mouth!
Alan and I were counting our teeth last night (normal couples do that, right?!) and he has 10 more teeth than I do!! Isn’t that funny! Anyway, back to Eve. She’s doing well and eager for the tooth fairy’s visit this evening!
Punctuation
Eve is reading the Sunday comics to me. Suddenly she gets up, gets a marker from then drawer, and starts making dots. I asked what she was doing and she rightly pointed out that they forgot the periods to end the sentences.
I’ve been reading the comics for years and never noticed that many of them don’t use periods. They use other punctuation, but then leave simple sentences un- punctuated. Weird, huh?
Oops!
I completely forgot to hang up Eve’s birthday collages this year! Oops! I was just cleaning off the mountain of junk piled on my desk and came across them. Sigh. I guess I’ll add “make 6yr collage” to my to-do list and try to remember to hang them next year!
A love note to Lex
Cardboard boats and birthday cakes
Today Eve is 6 years and 6 days and we are officially done celebrating this birthday!
We had a fun and exhausting day today. I was talked into entering a cardboard box boat competition at the aquatic center. It was part of their annual Spring Fling to celebrate their 4th anniversary. It sounded like fun and I hoped the kids would enjoy it. We got to the aquatic center at 9am and were given a plastic garbage bag, a box cutter, scissors, packing tape, and a long list of rules. Oh, and plenty of cardboard boxes! Off and on over the next few hours we built a cardboard boat! We took breaks for snacks and for rubber duck racing.

The whole project wasn’t quite as exciting for the kids as I was hoping. They did a lot of waiting around while engineer daddy did his engineering.

They didn’t provide us with any measuring devices (and we weren’t allowed to bring anything of our own!) so we did the best we could. Fortunately Eve just had her well child visit and we knew just how many inches tall she is!

As usual I didn’t know the schedule of events, so the kids had about one minute to decorate their ducks before the big race!

There were lots of ducks racing so they did them in groups. Lex and Eve’s ducks were in the final group. We had no winners in our family.

First cake of the day. They had three different cakes, so Alan and both kids got a piece and we all shared.

We decided to give our boat higher sides. Alan did some calculations about displacing water and such and the short sides were a little too short for comfort.

Look how closely they are paying to Alan’s attempt at giving them rowing instructions. It was loud and busy in there. We were all tired by this point!
After we got the boat done we had about 45 minutes left until race time, so Alan and the kids changed into bathing suits and went swimming. I stayed dry. I don’t enjoy swimming when it’s so crowded.
I really need to test the video settings before making movies. I don’t know why they keep changing and I never think to check them before starting the video, right at the moment I want to capture! Sorry for the blue tint and extremely low quality. If the aquatic center posts any better videos I’ll link to them later. What you can’t see well in this video is Eve completely panicking when the boat rocks and disolving into tears. She didn’t crying stop until about 10 minutes after she got out of the water.

This is the final picture before they went under. If you zoom in you’ll see Lex looking a little nervous and Eve completely in tears.
So, a few lessons learned here. First, the kids are not very good rowers. Second, they were so excited about winning that the idea of NOT winning didn’t even occur to them. You can see right from the beginning that they got off to a slow start and were immediately distracted by the other teams. Third, Eve apparently didn’t think our boat was sinkable and when it started taking on water she panicked and it was all over from there. Maybe we should have spent some time discussing what to do if/when water gets into the boat.
With their young age, lack of rowing abilities, and complete lack of focus they didn’t stand a chance! Oh well. Lex had fun (though he also cried a bit because he was sad the boat sank) and I suspect if you ask Eve next week she’ll tell you it was fun too. Give her time to recover. :)
After that excitement we rushed home, inhaled bagels for lunch, grabbed the castle cake and party supplies and rushed out the door again. We were barely home for 15 minutes before leaving for her birthday party.
Gymnastic was fun. We had seven of her pre-K classmates, plus Lex and Eve. They bounced around like crazy people for awhile, then went down on the floor and did the routine for an hour, then back up for cake and presents. It was over before we knew it!

My lovely princess castle cake! I won’t go into details on my thoughts on this cake as I know I’ve mentioned it before and everyone tells me it was wonderful so I’m going to be ok with that.
The gymnastics place is fun, but it’s not my ideal location for a party because there is very little time or space for the kids to just play together. It’s also a very rushed party. You get one hour of gymnastics and half hour for cake and presents. They had parties back to back today too, so as we were arriving the party before us was leaving, and we were rushing out the door at the end to allow room for the next party. Most of the kids didn’t have time to finish their cake and Eve rushed right through the presents. That said, she has been asking for a gymnastics party for a few years now and I was happy to not have to clean for and plan another birthday party! An hour and a half, in and out, and we’re done celebrating Eve’s birthday!! I’m done party planning and cake baking… until next month!
Tomorrow morning we have brunch plans with another family, and then we can rest. Monday it’s back to school!
But now, I need sleep.
Eve’s 6 year check-up
When you’re a little peanut you get a visit to the doctor’s office with every birthday. Like your final, less than exciting, birthday present! Today was the day for miss Eve. Luckily there are no shots at this age. She weighed in at 50lbs (76%) and 48.5″ tall (94%). She was loopy and silly, but of course an extremely well child!

They are such big kids now! I even read a few pages of a magazine while they entertained themselves.
After they went to bed I started building her princess castle cake. I have set the bar high for birthday cakes and their requests are growing. Sadly my skills (and my time!) seem to be lacking lately. The “crumb coat” on this cake isn’t looking good. Hopefully I can pull it together tomorrow! I’ll post pictures either way. :)
She melts my heart!
Dear mommy’
thank you for the baskit cake. i Love you. Love eve.
