Bumps and bruises

Two weeks ago Eve walked right into the garage door. It was coming down and she walked right into it. I was in the garage, she was outside fussing about something. I couldn’t get a word in to caution her about the door, and really didn’t think it was necessary because it’s not exactly quiet, but she was looking right at me and kept walking. Her forehead collided with the bottom of the door and she ended up with a big scrape and several abrasions. As part of the post-injury TLC I asked if she wanted some Tylenol. She said, “What is Tylenol?” Alan and I later congratulated ourselves on having kids so healthy they don’t even know what Tylenol is! (Upon further discussion I think she had a vague idea of Tylenol, but thought it was only for fevers.)

Murphy jumped in and said, “Oh yeah!?” and two nights later Eve woke up vomiting. That will teach us to boast about our healthy children. She threw up three times that night and three times the following morning. Over and done within 12hrs and no symptoms other than the throwing up.

This evening I found myself pulling out the pain reliever again as Eve took a face dive into her dresser. I bought her new PJs today that came with a silly monkey eye mask for sleeping. She put it on downstairs to show Alan, successfully made her way upstairs with the mask on, then ran for her bed. She dove, head first, towards the bed, but missed by a foot or so and crashed face-first into her dresser. Poor girl! There was a lot of blood, but fortunately I was right there and grabbed some clothes off the floor to cover her face. I got her all cleaned up and found a very fat lip. She says her tooth hurts a lot (a baby one, luckily!) so maybe she’ll have a wiggly tooth soon. We cuddled up with some ibuprofen and an ice pack and she fell asleep pretty quickly.

It’s tough being a six year old.

The Eve Effect

Have I written here before about the effect Eve has on her friends and classmates? She has a magnetism that draws all to her and since they are in kindergarten and haven’t quite figured out sharing, turn taking, and social status, they all fight over her! Seriously. I’ve seen it with my own eyes. Children crying to sit next to Eve. Grabbing her arms, arguing over who gets to be near her. It’s weird. I witnessed it a few times in school and asked her teacher awhile back if this is normal behavior or if it only happens when I’m around. She said it happens pretty regularly. Eve says she doesn’t like it and we’ve talked about ways she can be firm and tell people to let go of her arm and walk away. But these are her friends and she wants to sit with them all so it leaves her in an odd situation. I don’t think it really bothers her much though, because she never tells me about it unprompted and when she does talk about it she does so with humor in her voice.

Her teacher told me a few days ago that a bunch of them were crying at lunch over who gets to sit by her (which is just kindergarten nonsense because her whole class practically fits at one table so it’s not like anyone is very far from her!) and the teachers ended up doing assigned seating at lunch for a few days! That was the consequence for the silly arguing. Eve didn’t mention it until I asked her though. When I asked who she was assigned to sit next to, it turns out it was none of the crying kids. She’s so sweet and everyone is her friend so she was perfectly happy sitting next to the kids she was assigned to sit by.

It will be interesting watching her grow up. One of the most amazing parts of parenting is just watching them become people. Watching how they grow: physically, emotionally, and socially. I’m lucky to have two such different, yet equally strong and confident kids to keep me company in life. :)

Nice save!

Eve made a great while playing goalie at soccer practice this week.  Everyone cheered for her. The bast part though, is that she takes no credit for it.  As she tells the story, with great enthusiasm, “Nick kicked the ball right at my leg and it bounced off!!! Isn’t that so funny?!”.

The next day she drew a picture of the event at school.

Eve’s missing teeth

A few weeks ago the kids went to the dentist for their regular cleanings. Eve had no missing teeth and no wiggly teeth, but upon looking at her x-ray the dentist said her big teeth are “right there” and ready to come through at any time. We left with instructions to call him if big teeth poked through before little ones fell out.

Well, of course, they did! This past Sunday Eve said she thought maybe a new tooth had come in. Sure enough, she had a big tooth poking through behind her little ones!

I called the dentist and scheduled an appointment to have her four front teeth removed, something we’d discussed at the last appointment. It sounds scary, but I think it makes the most sense to get them out so the big teeth can grow in as straight as possible. Hopefully!

Today was the day. You know it’s urgent when they’re booking routine visits six months out, but manage to find time for you in two short days. Most mornings I’m dragging Eve out of bed at 7:00am and forcing breakfast into her before school. This morning, when she has no school and isn’t allowed breakfast, she’s wide awake at 6:00am! Of course. Alan took Lex to school and Eve and I headed to the dentist.

She was SO BRAVE!! She got shy and quiet when they called her, then stuck to me like glue for a few minutes in the dentist’s room, but she settled quickly and barely flinched when they took out those tiny teeth! She just had nitrous oxide and novicane, not Valium (like Lex had when he lost his first tooth to the dentist as well!) Since she was older and calmer they didn’t think the Valium was necessary. She was a champ through the whole process. Laughing and chatting. When we got in the car at the end, her mouth full of gauze, she started crying again. We cuddled for a few minutes, then headed home and cuddled on the couch for a bit, changing the gauze frequently. An hour later she said she was hungry so we got up and she’s been going ever since! She had pudding and a soft PB&J. We played outside, played a few board games, read some stories. She’s having quiet time now and I keep asking if she’s tired and wants a nap, but “No!” is all I hear.

Eve’s new smile! (sort of. the bottom half of her face is still pretty numb here!)

A mere three hours after dental surgery and this girl is up and at ’em already!

I wasn’t exactly sure what to expect for recovery. Lex was four and had Valium so he slept a lot of the afternoon after his procedure. I remember sleeping a lot after I had teeth pulled, but I know I had general anaesthesia for that procedure. I guess she didn’t have any drugs that require serious recovery. I’m glad for that! I love seeing her up and grinning so fast. I’ll post a picture later when things are a little more healed up, but there is no way four grown-up teeth are going to fit into the spot that opened up today. She’ll be lucky to get two teeth in that hole! I think both kids inherited my small mouth!

Alan and I were counting our teeth last night (normal couples do that, right?!) and he has 10 more teeth than I do!! Isn’t that funny! Anyway, back to Eve. She’s doing well and eager for the tooth fairy’s visit this evening!

Punctuation

Eve is reading the Sunday comics to me.  Suddenly she gets up, gets a marker from then drawer, and starts making dots.  I asked what she was doing and she rightly pointed out that they forgot the periods to end the sentences.

I’ve been reading the comics for years and never noticed that many of them don’t use periods.  They use other punctuation, but then leave simple sentences un- punctuated. Weird, huh?

Oops!

I completely forgot to hang up Eve’s birthday collages this year!  Oops!  I was just cleaning off the mountain of junk piled on my desk and came across them.  Sigh.  I guess I’ll add “make 6yr collage” to my to-do list and try to remember to hang them next year!
