Apples galore!

I realize today is the last day of August and not quite yet fall, but the kids had the day off (after a tiring three days of school!) and we took a field trip to the apple orchard. It was the best part of our otherwise rocky, cranky day.

I was all excited to go but when I called to make sure they were open I found out they weren’t doing wagon rides yet or making the donuts everyone loves so much. That all starts tomorrow. So we decided not to go. The kids were playing nicely so I sat down on the couch to do a few minutes of work. You can guess where that went. FIGHTING! Yelling, pushing, shoving… all over that ONE Hot Wheels they both absolutely NEEDED. I yelled, they yelled, life was NOT good. I tried to get them to the playground but they fought that too. I went outside for a breath of fresh air. Cleaned up all their outdoor toys that I had asked them a hundred times to clean up. I am in such a PURGING mood lately, but that is for another post.

I came back in, we had snack, and then I decided we were going to the apple orchard. I explained how nice and calm it would be today and how tomorrow would be crowded and loud and packed. All true. They decided to cooperate (snack ALWAYS helps!) and we had a lovely mid-day at the orchard.

eve and a goat

First things first, petting the animals.

lex bunnies

Hello bunnies, are you in there?!

feeding goats

The goats like to be fed. They are eager eaters!

bunny houses

Lex loved all the bunny houses. They have a whole bunny village there.

peacocks

The peacocks are so beautiful and a little scary. The kids wanted to pet one, but none of the birds were interested in being petted.

bully sheep

This was a bully sheep. She kept trying to push the kids over whenever they got near the food machine. Then she followed Eve for awhile. Here Eve is trying to pet that bunny (finally a bunny that stayed still long enough to be touched!) and the sheep kept getting in her face. I took a quick picture and then rescued her. :)

pig

I like this pig. How long to they live? I wonder if it’s the same pig we see every year. Last year the piglets were feeding and that was cute. This year they were all snuggled into the hay and sound asleep.

apple lex

The requisite face-through-sign-board photos.

apple eve

Silly little apple.

plums

This year we decided to pick some plums too. They were abundant. However, they are at their peak and many were squashed on the ground. It was tough for any of us to reach the high ones without slipping on the squishy plumy ground.

eve plum

Eve liked the plums.

apple bites

The Cortlands were HUGE and tart.

close up

The apples were abundant!

lex picking

Lex was a rockin’ apple picker! I think he picked 90% of what we brought home!

eve in wagon

Eve got tuckered out. We were there at lunch time. She ended up relaxing in the wagon for awhile.

me

Lex took a picture for me! He was super proud that he got it before Eve stuck out her tongue. :)

The weather was warm and breezy, not too hot, not too sunny, not too anything. Just right. Then we bought some cider and maple sugar candies and headed to the paint store.

When we got home we managed to only have one or two more arguments before bedtime. I’m hoping tomorrow goes a little smoother. Maybe we’ll bake an apple pie to celebrate September! (or an apple spice cake like at the end of this post!)

First day of school – PM Update

What a great first day of school! The bus came at the time I expected it, like two years ago, not the time the school said it would come. I went out for the earlier time and spent 20 minutes standing by the side of the road. Good thing it was a beautiful day! (and I have a smart phone to keep me entertained)

When they got off the bus they were both bouncing and happy. Lex walked with me down the street, holding my hand and telling me about his day. Eve dropped her backpack and ran like a crazy woman back to the house.

snack

Snack. This is one part of the day I missed very much last year with our after school pick-up routine. I love having a healthy snack on a cleared table. Sitting down with them after school. Looking through their backpack papers. Hearing about their days. <3 [/caption] [caption id="attachment_8635" align="aligncenter" width="375"]bus The big moment arrives… 23 minutes later than I was told it would. :)

lex

Lex sat with Eve on the ride home. She’s been looking forward to that for months! When the bus stopped he was packed and ready to hop off. He has clearly had some experience with this.

eve

Eve took a few minutes to gather her things. She dropped her bus tag a few times. She barely made it down the big stairs. Fortunately the bus driver is great and patient and gave her plenty of time. I was glad to see he’s still driving our route.

I scooped Eve up halfway down the bus steps. I couldn’t wait any longer to hug her! I half expected her to take a nap this afternoon, but she held it together through to the end.

We played a few games, had pancakes for dinner, and off to bed. Easy day! Not to sound too greedy, but here’s hoping for another one tomorrow!

It’s 8:10pm now and the kids are in bed but wide awake! Over excited from the day… maybe… or maybe pancakes for dinner wasn’t the best idea. :) Oh well!

First day of school – AM Update

I know you are all waiting with baited breath to hear about the first day of school. Here’s the morning update.

I could not have asked for a nicer first day of school morning. Alan and I got up at 6:15 and found the kids cuddled on Lex’s bed chatting with each other. I don’t know what about. It took a little convincing to get them downstairs, not because they were unhappy but because they were so happy together up there. They came down eventually, got dressed, and ate a little breakfast. They gushed over their lunches (“Oh mom, it’s exactly what I wanted!”) and eagerly posed for pictures. Someday Eve may smile in photos again, but for now we just get the silly face.

lunch

Mini blueberry bagels with cream cheese, “cracker snack,” honeydew melon, and pirates booty. Water on the side and a love note taped on top. Eve even requested it “just like Lex always got last year.” I was planning to write them anyway, even before she requested it!

Lex helped me pick photos from the first day of school last year and we printed and framed them for photos this morning. I love the idea of doing this each year. Like the Flotsam book, for you literary type out there.

lex

Lex was eager to pose while we waited for Eve to get her shoes on.

together

Second grade and kindergarten. These babies sure do grow up fast!

lex 2

We took advantage of a break in the rain for a few quick porch shots. Do you think he looks much different from last year?

eve 1

She looks totally insane here! She was eager, but also nervous.

eve 2

They are both so silly I couldn’t decide which was the better picture.

They both got in the car happily and got out again at school! A big improvement from last year! All morning he kept saying, “I can’t believe I’m in second grade! I just can’t believe it.”

When we got to Eve’s classroom it was crowded with parents but she snuck through, hung up her hat and backpack, declared the “sign in” process to be very easy (they have to find their name on a card and put the card in the bucket), and then went to play. I had to ask for a hug goodbye!! I could tell she was a bit nervous though because she was very quiet and actively chewing her nails. She found her friend, picked an activity table, and started playing. Lex too had to request a goodbye hug. :)

goodbye

Saying goodbye in Eve’s classroom.

Then down the hall to his classroom. He almost cried, but after a few sniffles he talked himself out of it. He found his cubby, studied them for awhile because they have first names on them but are arranged by last name so he had to figure that out, then found his desk. They have desks in 2nd grade instead of tables. They are currently pushed together into groups so they’re similar to tables. He found his desk and was excited to see a bookmark on it. He likes bookmarks. :)

He gave me a few goodbye hugs and that was that.

lex at school

I didn’t take too many pictures in his classroom because I think he’s getting a little too old to have his mommy following him around taking pictures… in front of his friends anyway! No restrictions at home though! :)

Then I did a little paparazzi move and snuck a picture of Eve on my way back down the hall. She had moved on to a new activity table and was happily playing with her friend still. I think it helps a lot that her friend is in the class.

eve at school

Goodbye sweet Eve. Have fun on your first day of kindergarten!

Then I left. All by myself. I managed to not cry, which makes it a no-tears morning all around! It did take some effort though! Now I’m going to attempt a run (most likely a walk ’cause it’s been awhile!) and then have lunch with my friend. I’m sure the bus will be here before I know it!

Last day of summer vacation.

We celebrated the last day of summer vacation, and a beautiful day at that, with some big muscle activity – a hike down Quechee Gorge. It was supposed to be a Valley Quest, but we are very familiar with the path and yet still couldn’t find the treasure box at the end. Oh well. We had a great time anyway!

long path

Away they go!

eve

Eve wore her “exercise dress” for the hike.

lex

How’s this for big muscle activity!?

snack

Snack time. Big muscle activity takes frequent refueling!

skipping rocks

The weird arm positions are because Lex was teaching the other two how to skip rocks.

low water

The water is very low this year. Unlike this week last year! Hello Irene!

caterpillar

Eve finds caterpillars everywhere we go. At the farm later in the day she had a wooly bear crawling up her shoulder!

leaves

On the way back up the hill the kids gathered “beautiful leaves” for a bouquet for me. I reminded them that in a few weeks we’ll have more leaves than we know what to do with right in our own front lawn!

After the hike we headed over to the farm to pick up our CSA share for this week. The kids ran around for awhile then announced that they were “boiling hot!” We grabbed some frozen yogurt from the CSA and brought it home for lunch. After a nice quiet time, including a scary chapter from Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkabahn, we spent the afternoon playing with our neighbor. It was peaceful and nice. The kids ended up in bed late because we had to pick Alan up from work, but so far they are both excited for school tomorrow. Hopefully they keep that excitement in the morning!

Hangman

Eve has taken an interest in Hangman lately. Look at the game from lunch today. Before she put in the “P” I was entirely stumped and convinced she was making things up. She told me it was three words and when I got the “U” it was clear they were repeating words. I completely missed the “P” and, to be honest, it’s because I quickly assumed she was making up words. Or changing her mind as she went a long, which she tends to do. When I was completely hung she giggled (a lot!) and started writing the “P”. Up Up Up. She was so proud of herself!

hangman

When I came in to read her stories after lunch I found her rocking her babies and reading them a story. She is so sweet and smart and ready for school!

reading

Speaking of school, here is Eve’s quote of the day:
“I hope there’s not going to be any learning on the first day of school.”

Weekend Update

Real quick. Last post. When it rains it pours around here!

EVE

Eve pouting in the corner because “No one will play with me,” after Lex and I got bored of playing her endless imaginary game. Poor girl. She needs some 5yr old girl friends to play with!

quiet time

This is what quiet time in our house looks like sometimes. Other times it’s a boy lost in a book. I never know what I’ll find when I open the door.

popcorn

Who can resist licking the bowl after the most popular snack in the house – popcorn with raisins, spray butter, and nutritional yeast!

tea

Tea and the newspaper. Like my new tea mug? I painted it myself. :)

windows

Eve bought window markers with her allowance last week and our windows have been thoroughly decorated all week. We finally got around to washing them this weekend. I even managed to make it a game for the kids!

fat lip

I can’t expect to make it through a busy week with family and babysitters and contractors and house disruptions and all without at least one major breakdown. This week’s breakdown came courtesy of Lex on Saturday afternoon. Unfortunately it ended with him jumping off the ottaman in his bedroom and crashing face first into a wooden doll cradle. The result was a scrape on his gums above his front teeth, a cut on the inside of his lip, and an hour with a mouthful of gauze to contain the bleeding. Now he’s left with a fat lip. Poor boy.

One more day until school starts!

A day trip to the lake aquarium

After kindergarten open house we swung by the house to pick up Mema and Lex and then headed out for an exciting day at the ECHO Lake Aquarium and Science Center in Burlington. We went there once last year but Eve was sick and it wasn’t a stellar success. This trip went MUCH better! It was a beautiful day, the kids were all happy and eager, and we had a great time!

lake view

It’s a beautiful day on Lake Champlain.

waiting

Checking out the fish while waiting for me to check in at the museum.

lunch

First things first, lunch on the terrace.

view

Lunch with a view. What more could we ask for?!

shipwrecked

First stop in the museum was a sunken ship exhibit. The kids loved it. We actually started and ended our visit in this shipwreck!

turtles

Then off to visit the turtles. Did you know there exists a soft-shelled turtle?

sea star

Eve loved the touch tank. I didn’t get a good picture of her touching the sea star, but this is a cool picture of a sea star feeding. The museum woman said you can tell it’s feeding because it is bunched up in the middle.

deck

Out on the deck for a quick pic. :) I love that he smiles for the camera these days!

binoculars

Getting a better view of New York state with a good pair of museum binoculars.

silly

Getting silly. Time for a break.

misting

We went back outside for a snack break, then a trip through the ankle misting machine. :)

bears 1

When we left the museum we walked up to Church Street, which is a cool walking street with lots of activity. The first thing we found there is a painted bear exhibit. I didn’t catch the details of why, but there were painted bears everywhere. A fundraiser for something, I’m sure. The kids decided we need to take pictures of them on every single bear. Mema and I took turns taking the pictures. I’ll spare you every single one and just post a few. :)

bears 2

The game was to try and take the picture before Eve stuck her tongue out. I didn’t win with this picture. :)

chocolate

We stopped a the Lake Champaign Chocolate store. I vetoed the “block of chocolate” option and we agreed on a bag of mixed chocolates instead.

love

I love these unprompted, heart-melting, hand-holding moments. It does a momma proud.

fountain

At the end of the street we found a fountain. The kids couldn’t resist. I couldn’t say no.

dinner

Lo and behold, we found a Panera Bread on Church Street! One with outdoor seating. One where the staff delivers your meal! Life is good. (on that note, I didn’t make it to the Life is Good store just down the street…. maybe next trip.)

bear 3

One more bear for good measure.

Then back in the car, more Wizard of Oz on audiobook for the drive home, and tired happy children. Life is good.

Kindergarten Open House

Eve had her kindergarten Open House on Thursday. I’m a few days behind on the blog but I figured I should get this posted BEFORE the back-to-school posts in two days! The event was the usual chaotic mix of nervous new parents and kids, and old hands like me and Eve. :) She didn’t even really care to go. I said, “You’ll get to see the classroom and meet the teacher,” and she replied with, “I know the classroom and the teacher.” I tried several things, finally just resorting to “Well, we have to go.” She went happily enough.

She did a great job sitting quietly while the teacher, nurse, counsellor, bus driver, and principal all spoke. By the end of the nearly 45m of talking most of the kids were bouncing and chattering, but Eve and her friend/neighbor both did a great job being still and quiet. I commended her on it later and she said, “You’re supposed to be still and quiet and listen to the teacher in school.” Like I said, she’s an old hand at this. :)

crowd

A crowd of kindergarteners. I wasn’t at a good angle for pictures of Eve, but that little girl in the pink hammed it up for me, thinking I was taking pictures of her. :)

on the bus

On the bus, taking a ride around town with a lovie tucked under her arm.

friends

Eve knows a few people starting kindergarten this year, but only one other kid in her class (there are three kindergarten classes this year!). This little girl is our neighbor and Eve’s new classmate. Eve showed her all around the classroom. :)

One thing I did learn is that her class only has 13 kids this year! Lex’s K had 19 kids, mostly boys. With three classrooms now the class sizes are much smaller. I love that.

Toys

image

My least favorite new thing. Browsing the toy dept while trying to spend every penny of their allowance. It’s boring for me! If it were 20 years ago I’d just leave them and browse the rest of the store on my own. No dice in this day and age!

A few pictures…

These are the laziest posts ever! Just some pictures. Enjoy. :)

drawing

A drawing Eve made for Lex. It is a tree and a flower and a person climbing a mountain. Even Eve wasn’t sure about the stuff in the middle. :)

mudroom

My mudroom. Easy (NOT!) come, easy go.

shoppers

This might be my last time shopping with these two for awhile. I think that’s probably a good thing.

runners

The store was pretty empty today so I let them be a little wild. They are full of wild these days!

on the bench

Waiting patiently while I check out at the grocery store. They wore themselves out.. for a minute or two!

flowers

We had many errands to run this morning, ending at the farm for our CSA pickup. The kids ran around (more wild!) and picked flowers from the pick-your-own flower patch they have. When we got home Eve took the job of arranging all the flowers in vases and watering them.

piano

While Eve did the flowers Lex checked out in the office for awhile. I went in to find that he was praticing the piano (the piano has become a saga for another post!) and he even wrote a song.
