Power-less day

We lost power last night at 1am.  I know it was 1am because Lex woke in a panic because his clock “went black.”  He was sick last night (fever, no vomit) and he was oddly raring to go at 1am.  He snuggled into our bed and none of us could sleep well.  Too quiet.  And a little scary when the wind howled and the raid pounded down.  Then we started hearing odd noises and voices outside.  I got up and peeked out the window and saw flashlights moving around.  Alan opened the window and yelled to our neighbors to see if all was ok.  Their basement was flooding so Alan went out to help.  Lex and I stayed in bed and talked about EVERYTHING!  He was concerned about the weather, the moon (the rain stopped and a bright moon came out), his neighbor friend floating away (his bedroom is in another part of the basement), electricity, why the power was out, etc.  It went on and on.  I enjoyed it for a long time, but eventually tried to get him settled down.  One sweet quote from Lex, “It’s a good thing the sun doesn’t need electricity!”  That was his comment after I told him that we wouldn’t need candles and flashlights all day because eventually the sun would come up.  He wanted nothing to do with sleeping, but I started dozing.  When Alan came back Lex said, “Dad, I have some hugs and kisses waiting for you!”  I happily rolled Lex over to Alan’s side of the bed and I fell asleep… for 2 hours until Eve woke up screaming at 6am!  Not sure why she was screaming, but it was 6am so we got up.  I forgot to mention that both of them had gone to bed at 6:30 the night before, so by 6am she was wide awake.  Eve and I got up and had breakfast by candle light while Lex and Alan slept for awhile, then Alan went to work.  Lex eventually woke up at 10am!  We had given him another dose of medicine at 4am so he slept well.

The whole day was just slightly off. Dark clouds moved through the sky, showing and hiding the sun.  It wasn’t dark, but it wasn’t quiet bright enough either.  Lex didn’t go to school.  I canceled the playdate plans Eve and I had and we all just hung out and did not much of anything.  It was probably best for them.  We did some projects, read a ton of books, reorganized the art drawer, etc.  All of our normal stuff, like naps and meals, were slightly altered.  Lex’s 10am morning meant no nap for him, and the lack of power meant, well… no power, and limited access to the fridge/freezer.  I ended up putting a box of food outside around 1pm, 12 hours after the fridge went dark.  Luckily the temps were in the mid-30s so it was cold enough outside but we weren’t too cold inside.

Turns out there was a very large tree across the road in our neighborhood.  After 15.5hrs they got things put back together and our lights flickered on.  Yay!!  Just 10 minutes before the outside edge of their estimated time frame.  I’m was thrilled!  :)  The kids were equally excited.  We had dinner, baths, and early bed.

They are both sick now.  Colds, coughs, runny nose, lowgrade fevers, etc.  Fun, fun.  We canceled our weekend plans and hopefully everyone will be well by Monday.  Hopefully!

Birthday preview

Eve and I had a great morning. We dropped off Lex and then stopped at the grocery store for a few items. After the grocery store we decided to walk over to iParty to get some ideas for her birthday party. We spent a very long time there :) She played, I browsed, it was relaxed and fun. She tried on ALL of the party hats, and every time I turned around she had an armful of stuff. I let her pick out one thing (a little stuffed Easter bunny) and she kept saying “Bunny wants…” in an effort to get more stuff. She’s definitely a shopper! I ended up buying candy molds to make flower candy covered pretzels. Eve loves chocolate dipped pretzels. We discovered this at a little holiday party at Michelle’s house. I think Eve ate all of the chocolate dipped pretzels that day! When I saw these cute flower molds I thought they would be perfect for her party. Then we walked to CVS to buy some pretzels and check out the new store, but they didn’t have pretzel rods, so we walked back to the grocery store! On the way back to the car we stopped to watch a front loader scooping up snow and dumping it into a dump truck. This was exciting! For Eve, anyway. We stood in the cold drizzle and watched as he filled up the entire dump truck. Eve was sad that I wouldn’t let her walk around to the back of the building to watch him dump it out. Instead, when he drove away, we got in the car and then drove over to where he parked the dump-truck to fill it up again and watched from inside the car. THEN we followed him behind the building (in the car) to watch him dump it. He waved at Eve when we were standing in the parking lot, and I hoped he realized it was us again in the car, otherwise he might have been paranoid about the red car slowly following him around the parking lot :) Then it was time to pick up Lex again! How’s that for a fun morning!

Now the birthday preview… candy dipped pretzels!   They are super easy to make and the kids love them!

Candy molds

Simply melt the candy melts (or chocolate) and pour it in. I chose to paint a little pink in first for the centers of the flowers. Let that dry for a few minutes, then pour on the other color.

Filled candy molds

Fill the mold and lay the pretzel rods in. I used pink and yellow melting candy for these, but next time I think it will be straight chocolate!

Breakfast time

Today’s breakfast conversation revolved around constellations. Fun, right? Lex wants to go on a night time walk to find some constellations. I drew the two easy ones to find. The two I can always find anyway! :) Then they made funny smiles for me.

A beautiful snow day

We have a snow day today. It’s been awhile since we had much snow so everyone was pretty excited to wake up and see a thick, heavy covering, with more still falling. In fact, it’s been so long that Eve said, “Mommy, where did all the grass go?” :) We Lex heard that school was canceled, he said, “I think schools are closed in Winter Wonderland!” We were outside by 8:30am. It would have been even earlier except we had to go with Alan to drop the cars off for service. Eve went over and invited Parrish out to play and the three of them played together, very happily, for more than two hours! It was great. After lunch Lex conked right out, though Eve is still bouncing around. I missed her “nap window” and may pay the price for that later tonight!

A party day

We had a fun, but mixed up day yesterday. Lex and I went to WW in the morning and then went for haircuts, but they couldn’t fit us in, so we came home. We played for a bit and then went next door for Parrish’s birthday party. His mom said only a few people had RSVPed, but almost his entire class was there. It was great! The kids were all so well behaved, the food was plentiful (it always is at their parties!) and it was nice to be able to socialize with the parents that chose to stay. When it was time for cake all the kids ran to the kitchen and Lex ran into the farthest away room possible. He still is not one for the Happy Birthday song. He came out for a piece of cake once the crowd cleared out. Then they opened presents. It was fun to watch the kids start off sitting comfortably on the couch and then slowly creep their way forward until, about half way through, they were all piled on top of each other and we had to “reset” them back on the couch, only to begin the excited creep forward again! :) The party was from 11am-2pm, right at naptime for this family. Eve got pretty angry when I suggested leaving her home for a nap, so she came and partied hard with the rest of them. She almost fell asleep in my arms at one point, but she rallied for cake.

When we got home around 2pm, Alan was just getting ready for work. I put Eve down for a nap at 2:30 and Alan read to Lex, who quickly fell asleep. Then Alan went to work and the kids napped from 2:30-4:30ish. I normally wake them up before 4:00, but decided to let them go this time due to the late start and the fact that I was exhausted and enjoying the break!! When they got up we all exercised together (The three of us actually, Alan was at work) and it was almost 7pm by the time we got around to dinner. Normally they are in bed between 7:00 and 7:30pm, but last night it was 8:45 before they were in bed! I think it would have been even later if they hadn’t done such a great job exercising with me. Everyone had fun.

Eve in the melting snow

On the way home she took a quick break to stomp on the snow in front of the garage, what little of it is there.

New blog format

Don’t worry, you’ve come to the right place. And if you were here around 8:30 Friday night this blog may have looked different each time you reloaded the page! :) I’m just playing with new blog templates. I want more flexibility with the header. What do you think of this one? I have to go now, but more changes may occur in the future.

When I grow up to be a…

baby panda… mommy… big brother… daddy… etc.

Eve is a very creative girl. Funny and creative. She likes to tell me stories that begin with “When I grow up to be a…” The other night she told me “When I grow up to baby panda, you can be my mommy and we can live in the zoo.” Or “When I grow up to be a big brother I can pee standing up like Lex.” I love the creativity and mixed thoughts.

This morning we had a very gender-stereotyped morning. Alan and Lex exercised in the office and I folded laundry. Eve “sewed” a pocket, “knit” me a hat, made a birthday party for her baby, and “washed” and “dried” baby’s blanket after “baby threw up on it.” So much domestic creativity packed into a short period of time.

Both of the kids like to play “monsters and ghosts” and spend ridiculous amounts of time finding ghosts and monsters. This game can entertain them for hours. Sometimes they step on the monsters and ghosts to squish them, other times they invite them in for dinner. The other day the kids “found” a ghost in my slipper. Turns out it was a baby ghost and it was her birthday! They made the baby slipper ghost a cake (a chocolate-watermelon cake) and threw a party. The creativity is amazing and, at times, amazingly funny!

Eve preparing for a photo shoot

This morning Eve decided to put on high heels and a scarf and take baby for a photo shoot.

Examining a shoe. I think this is a pretty picture of her. Serious, but pretty.

Pumpkin waffles

On Eve’s request, we had pumpkin waffles for dinner last night. They were super yummy! When we first made waffles (after hubby got me a waffle iron for Christmas!) Lex ate too much and got a stomachache. He hasn’t tried them since. Silly boy. Last night I got him to try the “special orange waffles” without syrup. He liked them, but then asked for syrup. I was careful to give him only small amounts (of syrup and waffles!) to avoid stomachaches. He seemed pretty happy. Eve and I, of course, ate them all up. I got the recipe from weelicious, a cool blog with healthy food ideas. She suggested making cream cheese sandwiches with them. That may be lunch in the near future!

Weelicious Pumpkin Waffles
Pumpkin Waffles
2 1/2 Cups Flour
1/3 Cup Light Brown Sugar
2 1/2 Tsp Baking Powder
1 Tsp Baking Soda
1/2 Tsp Salt
2 Tsp Ground Cinnamon
1 Tsp Ground Ginger
4 Eggs
1 Cup Milk (I used rice milk)
1 Cup Buttermilk (I used low fat)
1 Cup Pumpkin Puree
6 Tbsp Butter, melted

1. Preheat waffle iron.
2. Sift first 7 ingredients into a bowl.
3. In a separate bowl whisk the remaining ingredients.
4. Whisk the dry ingredients into the liquid mixture and whisk until smooth.
5. Pour about 1/2 cup of the pumpkin batter into a waffle iron that’s been buttered or greased and cook according to manufacturer’s directions.
6. Serve with maple syrup or make into sandwiches filling with cream cheese and whatever other fillings you desire.
