Power-less day

We lost power last night at 1am.  I know it was 1am because Lex woke in a panic because his clock “went black.”  He was sick last night (fever, no vomit) and he was oddly raring to go at 1am.  He snuggled into our bed and none of us could sleep well.  Too quiet.  And a little scary when the wind howled and the raid pounded down.  Then we started hearing odd noises and voices outside.  I got up and peeked out the window and saw flashlights moving around.  Alan opened the window and yelled to our neighbors to see if all was ok.  Their basement was flooding so Alan went out to help.  Lex and I stayed in bed and talked about EVERYTHING!  He was concerned about the weather, the moon (the rain stopped and a bright moon came out), his neighbor friend floating away (his bedroom is in another part of the basement), electricity, why the power was out, etc.  It went on and on.  I enjoyed it for a long time, but eventually tried to get him settled down.  One sweet quote from Lex, “It’s a good thing the sun doesn’t need electricity!”  That was his comment after I told him that we wouldn’t need candles and flashlights all day because eventually the sun would come up.  He wanted nothing to do with sleeping, but I started dozing.  When Alan came back Lex said, “Dad, I have some hugs and kisses waiting for you!”  I happily rolled Lex over to Alan’s side of the bed and I fell asleep… for 2 hours until Eve woke up screaming at 6am!  Not sure why she was screaming, but it was 6am so we got up.  I forgot to mention that both of them had gone to bed at 6:30 the night before, so by 6am she was wide awake.  Eve and I got up and had breakfast by candle light while Lex and Alan slept for awhile, then Alan went to work.  Lex eventually woke up at 10am!  We had given him another dose of medicine at 4am so he slept well.

The whole day was just slightly off. Dark clouds moved through the sky, showing and hiding the sun.  It wasn’t dark, but it wasn’t quiet bright enough either.  Lex didn’t go to school.  I canceled the playdate plans Eve and I had and we all just hung out and did not much of anything.  It was probably best for them.  We did some projects, read a ton of books, reorganized the art drawer, etc.  All of our normal stuff, like naps and meals, were slightly altered.  Lex’s 10am morning meant no nap for him, and the lack of power meant, well… no power, and limited access to the fridge/freezer.  I ended up putting a box of food outside around 1pm, 12 hours after the fridge went dark.  Luckily the temps were in the mid-30s so it was cold enough outside but we weren’t too cold inside.

Turns out there was a very large tree across the road in our neighborhood.  After 15.5hrs they got things put back together and our lights flickered on.  Yay!!  Just 10 minutes before the outside edge of their estimated time frame.  I’m was thrilled!  :)  The kids were equally excited.  We had dinner, baths, and early bed.

They are both sick now.  Colds, coughs, runny nose, lowgrade fevers, etc.  Fun, fun.  We canceled our weekend plans and hopefully everyone will be well by Monday.  Hopefully!
