Day 4: Lego Land

Day 1: First Flight
Day 2: Just Hanging Out
Day 3: Disney Fun

These posts are getting too long (and taking too long!) so I’m taking a short cut with this one. I posted the photos (126 photos, down from 156!) on my Picasa site instead of posting them here. I’ll put one or two good ones here and link to the rest. Hopefully that works for all.

On Day Four, Sunday, we had Lego Land on the agenda. Sadly Lucas was still running a fever so Andrea stayed home with him while I took the other five kids (um, I mean fathers and children) to Lego Land. Everyone was SUPER EXCITED!

Lego Land!

Mike and Alan jumped right in to redesigning the park and discussing all the ways it could be even bigger and better! Overall it was pretty cool, especially since it’s only about a year old. Apparently they bought the closed down Cypress Gardens and renovated it into Lego Land. There is still an area called Cypress Gardens that has “historic botanical gardens” and a cool banyon tree. We didn’t make it that far however. We spent the entire day there and ended up rushing through the final third of the park, not including the Cypress Gardens or the closed-for-the-season Water Park. I think we could easily have spent two full days there. Especially if the weather had been just a touch warmer!

group shot

The first thing we did was take a trip on the “Island In The Sky,” a ride that went way high up and provided an awesome view of the park.

Lex and Eve went on their first roller coasters. They both went on a regular one with cars on tracks. I was next to Lex and part way through he decided it was too scary for him. A little late buddy! Then while Lex learned to drive a Lego car, Eve and I went with Mike and Joe on a hanging-from-the-track type of roller coaster. Eve squeezed my hand tightly and part way through said she wanted to get off. Fortunately roller coaster rides are over pretty fast! Neither of them seemed terribly traumatized though. I suspect they’ll try roller coasters again some day. :)

Maybe the coolest part of the park was the Miniland. Tons of real-life places, built in Lego miniatures. They had NYC, Washington DC, Kennedy Space Center, and so much more! Several of them were even interactive in small ways. It was amazing to see all the detail put into the landscapes.

lex and me

I like this picture. :)

Here is a video of Lex driving his Lego car. They had “police” walking around issuing tickets to kids breaking the rules. There was a max you could get and still get your Lego licence. I don’t know the number because Lex got no tickets! He was sweet at the very end and helped another kid get unbucked. In the video you can hear all of us shouting things at him. :) You can also see the blue roller coaster in the background that Eve and I went on while Lex learned to drive.

Lex officially has his Lego drivers license! (well, had, it seems to have been misplaced shortly after this photo was taken :/ )

leaving lego land

I wanted a group picture on the way in, but we were all too excited to stop, so instead I made everyone pause for a picture on the way out. Tired happy people having fun.

Eve told me on the plane ride home that we have to come back to Florida some time when she is at least six, but before she is thirteen. I thought that was a random thing to say, but she explained that she really, really wants to drive a Lego car. :)

A good time was had by all at Lego Land! Now go check out all the pictures in the Picasa album. You know you want to!

Day 5: Kennedy Space Center
Day 6: The Zoo
Day 7: A Drive Along the Coast
Day 8: Heading Home

Home again, home again

We are home again. Back in the snowy north. I want to complain, but really can’t as the weather is warm (ish – 38°) and sunny today. Everything in Florida was green and there were lots of fountains. I liked that. The cars were all shiny and not covered in salt. Sigh. Anyway, we are back now.

I’m taking the pictures off the camera now. Turns out we took 893 photos!! Yesterday Eve and I were guessing at how many photos there were. I guessed 400 and she guessed a million. We were both off by a lot! I’m going to post vacation updates one day at a time. Trying to do the whole week in one blog post would take forever to read and even longer to write!

I think the kids have been suffering from craft withdrawl during vacation. They’ve spent all day today with the paper and scissors and tape everywhere. Rummaging through the recycling bins, lots of glue and string. Crafty kids getting caught up on crafty things.

Crafty kids hard at work.

Lex also had many inspirations for train layouts while on vacation. On the plane ride home he drew up diagrams and first thing this morning he was at work building train tracks and stations. Busy, busy.

The cardboard box is Sea Side Sheds with tracks going up to the top. From the top the trains have the option of going on the trampoline (closer track, near the blue box) or the water slide (further track).

More train tracks. I’ll have to ask him about the black boxes by the couch.

Happy Friday. More to come later!

House bowling

This is a game Lex has been thinking about for awhile but hasn’t had the chance to get to. He’s talked about it all week. I was thinking of taking them out after school this afternoon, but he had a bit of a meltdown this morning because he REALLY wanted to set up a home bowling game, so I decided to head home after school and let him bowl!

He has “pins,” ball, a start line, bumpers, and even a ball return (orange race track along the hearth). We played to 100 points. He kicked my butt! :) After a few tries on his knees he decided to stand. He did much better standing.

Good times on a Friday afternoon!

More skating

Are you tired of my skating videos yet?  We went again today and the kids are rocking!  Another time or two on the ice and they’re going to be better skaters than I am… which isn’t really saying much. :)  Today Eve figured out how to stop by dragging a skate.  I don’t know if that’s the proper way to stop (remember my skating skills?) but it works for her.  Often it results in a fancy figure skating spin at the end. :)

It looks like she fell at the end there, but really it was a fancy figure skating move and she recovered nicely. I should have left the camera running for a few more seconds! :)

Another picture update

I realize my posts are getting lame. Sorry. Life is going well, but busy. I’m working every day next week and already exhausted by it! (sob story, I know) Here are a few pictures and videos to give you the low-down.

After school one day last week we went bowling with a few friends. Just for something to do on a Tuesday afternoon. Everyone had a really great time!

The little guy in the blue pants is in a bowling league. He showed Lex and Eve how to bowl with the big ball!

Then Eve taught some other friends. Like her technique?!

Weekend fun.

pony

A castle for the pony.

Alan lets the kids play a computer game called Tux Cart sometimes, which I think is a Linux version of Mario Cart. Lex decided this weekend to make a real life version. He’s has built and rebuilt it several times so far and has a great time driving around.

Tux cart

Last night we had a movie night. We decided on a movie and then Alan went out to pick up dinner and rent the movie (he had errands to run as well) and the kids and I stayed home. They got all ready for bed, did a ton of chores, and then we played Uno until he got home. It was a great night!

laundry

The kids were so excited that they did a ton of chores while waiting for Alan to return with dinner and the movie. Mostly Eve, I guess, did the chores. She decided to fold, and put away, the basket of clean laundry that was sitting in the laundry room.

eve dessert

Last time we had movie night I gave them little ice cream sundaes for dessert. We had no ice cream this time, but Eve wanted dessert, so she made yogurt sundaes with honey and minty chips.

They were actually pretty good!

Today Eve and I went to a birthday party at the pottery place. She was very excited. Lex opted to spend some time at our neighbor’s house entertaining his poor buddy who broke his leg last week! Everyone had fun and everyone came home exhausted!

present

I love how much effort my kids put into birthday presents.

Mema, thank you for the MyPlate plates! The kids LOVE them and request them for every meal!

eve dinner

Eve’s dinner tonight consisted of yogurt, watermelon and honeydew melon, dry cereal, and cucumbers.

lex dinner

Lex had watermelon, bread/butter/yeast, and carrots, with a yogurt on the side.

Skating

We went ice skating again this afternoon. No tantrums, no drama, all fun. Both kids are definitely getting the hang of it. Lex generally stays on his feet and has learned to get up easily after a fall and Eve, when she focuses on what she’s doing, can make it around without falls too! She discovered today that she can get going really fast with the crates.

Lex looks like a pro in this picture! :)

the end

Always, the best for last!

Unfortunately I took my first fall today! My butt hit first, then my back. My wrists must have hit at some point too because both sore this evening (sorer than usual, that is!) Otherwise no pain. Mom, remind me of this if I’m dealing with sciatica again in six months!

An awesome snowday!

Today was the first real snowday of the year!  Mother nature snuck one in before the end of the year. We went out this morning to shovel and ended up making three snowmen, sledding on the neighbor’s hill, and had an awesome snowball fight with multiple neighbors! Eve was so happy that Emily, our neighbor and their favorite babysitter, was home. She invited Emily out to play and Emily said yes! Eve was very happy! :)

We had a great time!

I had to play the mommy card eventually and bring an end to the fun. My kids had already cried a few times and I was hoping to avoid a major meltdown. We had lunch, quiet time, and then a quiet afternoon.

Skating

We made it, barely, to the Skate with Santa program this evening. It’s really hard getting out the door with kids in the evening. We were all tired from the day. I worked all day and after school I took Lex to get his hair cut so we didn’t really have much time at home. I asked them to do two simple chores before dinner and they didn’t do them, or homework, so we had a bit of a struggle, but eventually we made it. It was one of those situations were I wasn’t looking forward to the getting there or the home afterwards parts, but I knew we would all have fun when we were there. So we went, and we had fun. Turns out Santa doesn’t know how to ice skate. He sat off the rink and was available for (expensive) photos. I don’t think many people did it. He kept trying to talk with Eve while we were getting her skates on and off. She giggled, but wasn’t interested in engaging with him. :)

Here are a few pics and a short video. In the video you can see Lex in the middle wearing a bright orange hat. We forgot helmets. Oops! Several grown-ups there were concerned for their little noggins, but fortunately we all survived!

Eve

I’m always amazed at how quickly they pick things up! It was also fun to see some of their classmates who were practically born on skates. Skating is a big deal around here. These kids were playing tag and hide-n-seek and other silly things, all on skates. They were as fluid on skates as they are in sneakers!

Scrabble

Today’s craft project. Take one game of Scrabble (from freecycle!) and one sheet of magnet paper. Cut paper into small squares. Enlist two children to peel off the backing and stick magnets to Scrabble tiles. Put on fridge. Spell away!

Scrabble on the fridge. Fun for all!

Want to hear something sad? The kids have no memory of those letter magnets we used to have. Want to hear something happy? Watch the videos below! They are hysterical!

I found them here while I was searching the blog for a picture of the letter magnets to show the kids. I’ll show them the videos in the morning. I’m sure it will refresh their memories. Lex is about two and a half in these videos.
