A beautiful sunshiney day

Today was a beautiful day.

It started with an unusual sort of morning where Alan was exercising (normal, not unusual), I did not (a little unusual), and the kids played upstairs by themselves for a long time (definitely unusual for the mornings!)  I got breakfast cleaned up, packed for our day, and even sat down and did a little work on the computer!  I kept looking at the clock thinking we must be late, but nope, plenty of time.

When it was finally time to go we headed to a Weight Watchers meeting and we met my Mom and Grandma.  With them, me, and the kids we had 4 generations at WW!  Those of us weighing-in had good numbers on the scale and that alone equals a good day in my mind! :)

After Weight Watchers I took my mom (and kids, of course) to our local farm for our CSA pickup.  The weather was beautiful and the sun was shining so we hung out there for awhile and I snapped a ton of photos! (not unusual!)

baby birds

A few weeks ago we saw the eggs and this week the baby birds were cheeping away.

eve

Playing with photo editing. They had PYO flowers today and the kids had fun with that.

Eve decided she did not want this one and "put it back."

I LOVE this view!

flower arranging

When we got home the kids arranged their flowers in little vases and a bowl of water.

beautiful

Beautiful! It would have been a good night to have company over for dinner. :)

After lunch we all had quiet time.  The kids did a great job today of staying in their rooms for the entire time.  They even played together upstairs for an extra half hour before coming down for snack.  Meanwhile I got some WW soup made, food prep done, the kitchen cleaned up, and even a little down time for myself.

In the afternoon I was hoping to bake cookies but the kids insisted on playing outside instead.  Bugger kids ;)  They played on the swing set (I took pictures) and then we all rode bikes for awhile.  Yep, me too!  They insisted.  It was fun.  The big news of the afternoon is that Lex decided today was the day to ride without training wheels!  I was telling him that maybe Grandpa Tom could help him practice tomorrow and he said, “Let’s just do it today!”  Um, OK!!  It took him all of about three minutes to figure it out!  Seriously.  He’s awesome :)  When I came in to pack up he decided to stay out and keep practicing.  He still needs practice on his starts and stops, but he amazed me this afternoon!

Baby ended up in the "back pack" instead :)

Alan had no car at work so we went to pick him up and decided to have dinner out.  It was yummy, everyone was well behaved, and I managed to stay within points for the day.  Like I said, a good day!

eve

Eve thought these flowers were as big as her head, then had to go compare. Once there she decided they would make nice pillows.

I added videos to a few older posts. I don’t always get them uploaded as quickly as the photos. Check out Back to the beach and Red, white, and blue scones.

Back to the beach

We went back to the beach a few days ago for another fun-filled day in the water. This time we took Mema along and some other friends.

a beautiful day

A beautiful day at the beach. Do you see Mema out on the platform? Sadly I missed the dive off, but my friend said it was perfect! :)

lunch

After a busy morning of swimming we took a break for lunch.

lex

Our afternoon ended when Lex decided he had swallowed too much pond water and his belly hurt. He sat in the little chair and moaned and groaned until I wrapped him up and took him home.

Backyard surprises

After a brief, but intense, rain storm this afternoon the kids decided we should go out and look for a rainbow. We put our rain boots on and puddle jumped our way up the road and back. No rainbows.

Before going in we decided to check on the black raspberries growing in the backyard. They are ripe for the picking! The kids picked and ate and Lex did a great job taking care of his little sister, picking berries for her and rescuing her from the prickers.

In with the black raspberries are lots of pricker bushes, baby sumac trees (those things grow like weeds!), and miles of grape vines.  We knew the grape vines were there in years past but this year they are growing like mad!  I was cutting prickers and pulling out sumac and grape vines when what to my wondering eyes ahould appear?!?  Grapes!!  So cool.

grapes

Grapes!

eve

Princess Eve decided to sit waaay over there and then demanded Lex bring the berries over to her. That didn't last long.

lex

We were going to ride bikes before we got sidetracked by the berries. Lex was a sweaty boy in this 100% humidity with his helmet and boots on!

We also found a huge grasshopper that the kids tried to feed berries to, a golden colored slug, and a cool caterpillar with a big eye spot.  Eve kept calling the slug a “swigs” and was very concerned for its welfare.  It was a great visit to the backyard.

A cool caterpillar with a big eye spot on it's behind.

We went out to find a rainbow but ended up finding so much more!

Sorry for the cell phone pictures. I didn’t think to bring a camera for our quick walk down the road. Of course that was silly of me!

A mini vacation in the White Mountains (part 2)

Subtitle: Hullo Thomas!

Messy kitchen, piles of laundry, and full grocery bags be damned, I’m going to use the remaining 45 minutes of quiet time to post this blog! Sometimes I think I should have named this blog “The Quiet Time Blogger.”

Sooo… after a fun and exhausting day at Santa’s Village we moseyed on down the road (for about two miles) to a quaint little bed and breakfast. Actually it was a pretty big old house. The kids took about 2.5 seconds to find the toy room with lots of blocks and puzzles and books and VHS cassettes from the 80s. When Alan wondered aloud if he would have to rewind the movie before watching it we all looked at him funny :) We had pizza and pb&j for dinner and everyone passed out by 8:30pm, no showers or bathes, just straight to bed. Lex fell out of bed once, face first onto a hardwood floor. The loud thump woke me right up but he slept right through it. An hour later Eve sat up in bed screaming for mommy, over and over. Alan and I both verbally reassured her while I picked my way around a crowded room and over a row of pillows on the floor (recently placed around Lex’s bed). When I got to her (I’m sure it was less than a minute but it felt like forever!) she was basically screaming in her sleep. I wrapped her up in my arms and laid her down and she kept on sleeping. Neither kid remembers that either.

We woke up a 6am the next morning feeling refreshed (only a little sarcasm there) and ready for another busy day. The kids were thrilled to eat Froot Loops for breakfast and Lex only cried a little when I told him he could not have a cookie (fresh baked when we arrived the night before, and I resisted, how’s that for will-power!) on the side with his cereal. Then we took showers and packed up and went back downstairs for the official B&B breakfast of scrambled eggs, french toast (blueberry stuffed for the boys), banana muffins and juice. I ate over half my points at breakfast alone but I felt guilty saying no since she had cooked this big meal just for us and one other family. It was delicious!

chess

Eve and Alan play a quick game of chess before breakfast (well, between breakfast one and breakfast two!)

Then we headed out for another spectacular drive through the White Mountains and a fun-filled day with Thomas the Train. Apparently Sir Topham Hatt makes an annual visit to the US to discuss train stuff with American train people (I wasn’t paying close attention to the story, sorry) and this year he decided to bring Thomas along as a reward for being such a Very Useful Engine. This year and every year. The kids were thrilled!

The event is held at the North Conway train station so there were regular passenger trains coming and going all day as well. There’s also an awesome miniature train setup there on permanent display and various other trains and engines and things to look at. Special for this event they had a food tent, an “Imagination Station” tent which consisted of crafty train related projects, face painting, tattoos, coloring, blocks, and several wooden train tables set up. They also had a bouncy house, a hay bale maze, and, most importantly, the gift tent. Guess where the kids kept asking to go back to. We told them they could each pick out one souvenir at the end of the day, but we ended up in the tent several times while they browsed.

tree

I pay good money for theme parks and train rides and all these kids really need is a good tree to run around :)

The moment they've been waiting for... Peep, peep! Hullo Thomas!

model trains -p1

This is an awesome model train display.

model trains -p2

This is a model of the station we were at. The girl in the bottom, right corner is holding up a sign that says "You are here." Such a cute detail.

turn table

This is the real turn table. The platform (on the right) turns on a small pivot point in the middle and the long rail around the edge of the circle. Impressive.

sir topham hatt

Sir Topham Hatt was weird. I think they should have found a rotund bald guy, instead they went with the mascot look. The kids had no interest in standing near him and Eve got upset because he didn't return her wave from afar. I don't think he could see much through that mask!

tired Eve

We had 2:30 train tickets, but by around 1:30 Eve was tired and ready to be done. Here she is on an old engine, watching the 1:45 Thomas train leaving the station. She really, really wanted to be on that train. Then we saw her friend from school on the train and she was even sadder not to be on it. Poor tired girl.

kitty Eve

To cheer her up we went over to the Imagination Station. Lex chose to bounce in the bouncy house (and get super sweaty!) while Eve opted for some face painting. She makes a cute kitty.

train tables

They were both hot and sweaty so we parked it by the train tables for the last 20 minutes while we waited for our train ride.

final pose

On the way out they decided to have a quick pose with Thomas.

Overall it was a fun day. We were back in the car and heading home by late afternoon. Home in time for dinner and much needed baths.

I see more mini vacations in our future. There’s lots to do in this neck of the woods!

A mini vacation in the White Mountains (part 1)

Subtitle: Christmas in July

Just back from yet another busy weekend. I’m having fond memories of last month when I was convinced life would slow down once school ended. Silly me! We just keep going and going. Today, however, is a down day. Washing car seats, laundry, dishes, blogging, etc. The kids are almost up from quiet time and I’m going to see if I can ignore them long enough to get this blog post done :)

This weekend was our much anticipated (for me) trip to Santa’s Village and Day Out With Thomas. When I first (months ago) told the kids about our plans they were thrilled but last week they seemed to have trouble keeping it in their heads. I think they were still recovering from the 4th of July and our last trip! Once we started packing excitement grew.

After an easy drive (my kids are top-notch travelers!) through spectacular scenery we arrived at Santa’s Village. I was having last minute doubts about whether this would be any fun since Lex isn’t really into Santa and, well, it’s July, but of course those were silly thoughts. We had a great time! There were rides just right for them and the lines were very reasonable (even non-existent at some rides) and the weather was a touch on the cool side, which was perfect for a day of walking around. The sun came out in the afternoon and heated things up a bit. We rode the rides and played the Elfabet game and ate some goodies and had a great time!

bumper cars

This might have been the most fun ride. We did it twice, switching partners, and everyone loved it! Lex even tried his hand at driving for awhile :)

ferris wheel

The view from the top of the ferris wheel.

…quiet time over… kids are up… successfully ignoring them so far…

lex

Lex loved the ferris wheel. He and Alan rode it while Eve and I rode The Himalayas! (a ride I loved at the fair many years ago, but it was too loud and fast for Lex). When we met up again Lex insisted on taking me on the ferris wheel because "it's the most fun ride ever!"

posing lex

"Look at that nice rock Mom. Do you want to take a picture of me sitting on it?" Umm... YES!

family

Crazy family! Good thing Alan has long arms! :)

reindeer

Eve feeding reindeer cookies to the reindeer. This place made me laugh because they had stalls for all eight reindeer (I didn't notice if there was one labeled Rudolph), but there were two to five reindeer in each stall. So the kids had no idea which reindeer was Dasher or Dancer or etc. You'd think one per stall would have been more useful for perpetuating the myth :)

cupcake chairs

Cupcake chairs! I love them!(I think my camera was on the wrong setting for much of the day :( )

polar lex

Lex is practicing his senior portrait pose :)

… Eve is bored… must be quick…

reindeer carousel

Riding the reindeer carousel. They were all Rudolph. Eve loved that.

water park

The water park! Their newest addition (added last year, I think) We avoided it completely. By the time we got to that side of the park it was late afternoon and I was too tired to even consider changing into bathing suites and entering the chaos. Fortunately the kids seemed to agree and didn't argue much.

watching the show

Taking a break to watch a show. See everyone eating ice cream? We were hot and tired and I decided ice cream was in order. By the time I got to the front of the line I was met with "Sorry, our ice cream machine is broken." Denied! Probably for the best anyway.

fire engine ride

This might be the world's most boring ride. It was the last ride of the day and our longest wait in line. The fire engine went around the building and the basket went up and down while you used a hose to spray the building. There were broken LED numbers on top so I think the point was to spray in the circles in the yellow fire and earn points, but the numbers didn't work, the hoses barely worked, and the whole thing moved slowly. The kids liked it, but Alan and I agreed it was the most boring ride ever!

sleigh

On the way out Lex said "Don't you want a picture of me and Eve in that sleigh?" Of course! Sadly Eve disagreed. Oh well.

After we left Santa’s Village we drove up the road to our B&B. It was a cute place but I was too tired and hungry to take pictures for the rest of the day. We checked in, went to a local deli place to grab dinner (pizza slices) then crashed in front of a little TV to watch Oliver and Company on VHS. Ahhh… 80’s flashbacks everywhere! Then off to bed.

Eve will not be ignored any longer so this is going to have to be a two-part blog. Stay tuned for our exciting adventures with Thomas the Train! Peep peep!

Red, white, and blue scones

When we were strawberry picking a few weeks ago I asked the kids what we should do with the berries. They threw out lots of idea, but Lex was pretty insistent on making scones. I wanted to make strawberry jam and I got my way first (yay me!) but when Lex kept asking about scones I finally agreed to make them. Not that I didn’t want to, mind you, but I really, REALLY like scones and I knew that making them would result in me eating them and that, dear readers, is what I didn’t want. However, when Lex started opening cookbooks and trying to find a recipe I decided to go with it. On July 3rd (old news, I know, sorry!) we made strawberry scones and when Lex suggested making red, white, and blue scones for the holiday I thought that was a genius idea and we threw in some blueberries. Yum!

We made Strawberries & Cream Scones from KAF. I doubled the recipe, but stuck with 2/3c. strawberries and added 2/3c. frozen blueberries. The batter ended up a little too moist, so next time I would recommend using fresh berries instead of frozen. As KAF suggests in the recipe :) They baked up just fine though and tasted amazing! I would highly recommend them to anyone looking for a high-fat, addicting, super delicious treat! :)

I didn't put much effort into the photography of these... too busy eating, but they were quite pretty and festive.

Happy Fourth of July

Happy, happy Fourth of July! I realize that it’s now the 7th of July, with the 8th approaching rapidly, but alas, I will write a Happy Fourth of July post tonight. I have many more posts in my head, but life keeps getting in the way. Sometimes I have to resign myself to living life, unblogged.

Anyway, we had a great holiday! We started the day with a fun parade. Grampy Don drove up to join us in the festivities. It was HOT and sunny and we were all sweaty and happy.

After the parade we walked around the post-parade festivities for awhile then headed down to our local library to check out their cake decorating contest. All the local towns are celebrating their 250th birthdays so there were lots of festivities this year. I wanted to enter a cake in the contest but I didn’t get it together in time, so I definitely wanted to see what was entered. It was fun. We hung out for awhile and the kids patiently waited to eat cake :)

The kids waited patiently for the cakes to be cut. Fortunately we were in a library and they were exhausted so much of their waiting involved sitting and reading books :)

There were some fancy cakes there.

eating cake

Their patience was rewarded, with piece of pink ladybug cake! Yum!

By the time we were done with the cake it was well past lunchtime. We headed home for a quick bite and some much needed rest time. For all of us!

After quiet time we packed up for the fireworks! This year we went to the local event (somehow we’ve always missed it in years past) so Alan and Lex drove the car down, loaded with our picnic supplies, and Eve, Grampy Don, and I all walked. It was great. Next year I think we can walk home too, but I was worried about getting everyone home after such a long day. I think I would have been carrying half of them! :)

We had a picnic, ran and ran and ran, and then ate some ice cream. It was fun. It was so hot and humid that the poor kids had sweat running down their necks. Whenever they got close to me I wiped them down with a wash cloth. They did great though and we all had fun. The fireworks were absolutely amazing! I’m not sure if it was their normal show or something special for the 250th, but either way, it was a great show!

running

We did a lot of running. We brought a frisbee and some balls and had a great time!

Eve took a break from running to watch the clouds with Grampy Don.

Grampy Don apparently makes a good seat. :)

me-n-eve

I was hoping to get a cool picture of the glow bands on our heads, but it didn't work without the flash and with the flash we got this. Oh well. Pretty girls anyway.

sparklers

One thing I really liked about the evening was seeing a bunch of people we know. Both kids saw classmates (one girl ran over to Lex, gave him a huge hug, then ran away!), and we saw Eve's old daycare teachers, and one of her preschool teachers. That girl had a bunch of sparklers and brought them over for Lex and Eve to try. It was so nice of her and the kids loved them.

After the show Alan walked home while the rest of us piled in the car. We don’t have enough room for five people, but he got home well before us anyway. My five minute drive took 38 minutes! Gotta love fireworks traffic.

This is just a sweet photo from the next day.

on the porch

Reading plant books on the porch.

We also made awesome red, white, and blue scones that I wanted to blog about, but not tonight. Soon. I hope. They were super yummy! :)

Twins?

twins

Twins? I can see why people might get that idea.

I regularly get asked if my kids are twins. It happened at the science museum this afternoon. We were eating lunch (under the fancy new pavilion!) and a nice man came over and asked if the kids were twins. I said no and gave my usual half-hearted laugh and explanation that she is just tall for her age. Then taking a guess I asked if his kids were twins. Yep. They looked nothing alike and were only barely the same size. I would never have thought they were twins. Funny how people often think Lex and Eve are though.

lex

Lex insisted on one of just him alone. In fact, the "sitting on the earth" photo shoot was his idea and Eve elbowed her way into the first shot. :)

The mud table. Eve's favorite outdoor activity here. She will stay put for as long as I let her, building sand houses and islands and creatures and whatever else her imagination comes up with.

The place was packed today! Camps and daycares and tourists, oh my!
