The day is not over yet, but here are a few pictures of our morning “Pet Show” birthday party. We had a blast!
More to come… later.
Eve decided today was the day to ride without training wheels. We’ve talked about it off and on and I told her this was her summer for a big bike, but for some reason today was the day. Lex has a bigger bike (“the red bike”) that he can ride but he prefers the smaller one (“the blue bike”). Today he was generous and agreed to let Eve try riding the blue bike. He hopped on the red one and took off. She hopped on the blue one and barely sat still while I explained the key points to riding a bike (such as keep pedaling!) and then she was off. The first go I held her seat and she pedaled fast! I was running along, awkwardly, and then moved my hand up to her shirt so I could run more upright. She yelled, “just let go mom!” but I was too nervous!! We got part way down the street and I let go. Away she went, fast! She put her feet down at the end of the road and tumbled a bit since we hadn’t yet discussed stopping. But she laughed and got right back up! I helped her get started again and she rode on. Back and forth we went.
I’m so proud of her!
Eve wrote her first blog post this afternoon!! Lex was making a sweeper robot out of kinex and wanted to take some pictures, so of course Eve wanted to take pictures too. Once she had a few pics she decided she wanted to write a blog post. I had been ignoring them for awhile so I decided to sit down with her and update the blog. I helped with the interface, but she did all the typing and much of the spelling. She was so proud! (I forgot how long it takes kids to type….) Lex says he wants to blog about his robot as well, but he’s too busy playing with it now.
After a much needed quiet, slow day (snow day!) we had dinner then headed out to attempt ice skating! Alan and I have each tried it once before, in high school, many (many!) years ago, but basically it was the first time for all of us! And it was FUN!! By the end of our 40 minute skate Lex was skating(-ish) without the milk crates. They both, we all!, want to go back again!

Eve got tired (it was already past bedtime!) and sat on her milk crates for a break. At one point she sat on the crates and I pushed her around for a bit. That was fun :)
This afternoon presented me with another “Why don’t I have my camera?!?” moment. At the very end of swimming lessons the teachers (they have two this session) took the kids (there are three in the class!) over to the BIG pool! The 9′ deep competition pool! The first boy (Lex’s classmate and a good friend of both of theirs) shouted with joy and jumped right in! I’m not certain he hasn’t been in that pool before. My two kids were very nervous. Eve made me (twist my arm!) come with them to the big pool. The two teachers, one in the pool and one out, were able to get Lex and Eve to sit on the edge of the pool and Eve worked up the courage to slip in. Once in she LOVED it! Lex, however, said quite clearly, “I don’t want to get into a very cold, nine foot deep swimming pool!” Hmm… when you put it that way I think he has a very valid point! I was pleased that his teachers respected that and gave him space. I think in the next few sessions he’ll work up the courage to join the other two. Eve, on the other hand, is already eager to start swimming laps!
I’m repeatedly impressed with how naturally swimming comes to Eve. Lex has been practicing his freestyle (back in my day we called it the Crawl Stroke) a lot lately. I have yet to see Eve even try it. At lessons today the instructor asked them to do it across the pool. Lex worked at it like he always does. He does a good job, but he is clearly thinking and trying. Eve just did it. Not perfectly, but smoothly and easily. She’s so little in the water, yet so smooth. Like a fish. I can’t wait to see her doing laps in the big pool. On second thought, yes, I can. She’s too little for the big pool!!!

Birthday cookies for breakfast :-)
Eve and I have been talking about painting her nails in an effort to help her remember not to chew on her fingers. It’s an experiment. This morning seemed like a good time and she was super excited. I dug out some dark polish (so she would notice it before sticking her fingers in her mouth!) and a sparkly top coat and she was an excellent customer!
After I dropped her off at school I went to CVS and bought some nail polish remover, as well as some pink and purple nail polish. I figured polish that wasn’t 10 years old might go on more smoothly and look nicer! I’ll let you know if this little experiment works. :)
I put the “Milestones” tag on it. Does your first manicure count as a milestone?
EVENING UPDATE: She came home from school with the polish about three quarters off already. She said she picked it off, which is conceivable considering the age of the nail polish and the sparkly top coat. However I found her with her fingers in her mouth many times this evening, so we put the new nial polish remover to good use and we’ll try again another day.
One thing I wanted to do on this blog but never did was make a list of milestones and dates down the side. Something quick and easy to scan. So far hasn’t happened and probably never will. Sigh. Anyway, I do want to keep track of the teeth, in case it ever matters. On Tuesday Lex lost another tooth. That’s five total now. This one was his bottom tooth, just to the right of the two front ones he lost first. He was eating a bakery bagel. Part way through the bagel he quietly tapped me on the arm and handed me a tooth. It was loose, but nowhere near as loose as the top front ones that hung on for so long. They make cute tooth fairy pillows… I was going to post a picture from Pinterest but the Internet is being annoyingly slow tonight that will have to wait for another day.
