The kids played together so sweetly tonight. I was making dinner and doing kitchen stuff and they were “hibernating” or camping, depending on who you asked. :) They built a fire with wooden blocks and lit it with a Lego match. They tried to build tent stakes with wooden blocks, but they kept falling over, so they made a tent with chairs instead. Lex had a “gun” to kill baddies and ghosts (the first time guns have reappeared since the first time they appeared many weeks ago, not something I’m thrilled about). Eve saw ghosts everywhere and perfected her scared face, all the while with a baby doll tucked up in her shirt “nursing.” It was cute. It might the be longest time they’ve ever played together without fighting and me needing to help or break up fights. I got so much done and didn’t even feel guilty about ignoring them!

What’s interesting?
Lex won an argument (discussion, really) with me the other day. He is very smart. He has show and tell tomorrow at school and we’ve been talking for weeks about what to bring. He wants to bring his breakdown train and I want him to bring something other than a toy. He always brings toys and the teacher originally asked us to try and get them to vary it. He does vary each time (truck, train, etc.) but it’s usually still a toy. So without being pushy I’ve been trying to suggest things for him to bring that might be interesting to the class. I suggested his new microscope and he reminded me that that too is a toy. After a suggestion or two the other day I said, “Lex please don’t bring a toy again. Let’s try to think of something more interesting.” He said, “But my trains are interesting to me.” What can I say to that? So he’ll be bringing his breakdown train to school tomorrow and I’m sure he will do a great job telling the other kids about it. On their show and tell day they also get to do lots of other things, like check the weather, count the kids, lead the line, etc. They feel pretty special on those days. I LOVE that he gets excited for school.
Life
I realize I’m slacking with the blog lately. I don’t have my computer on every day anymore (though I get email and FB on my phone!) and life just seems to be busy. Nothing super exciting, just busy. Dad and B were here for a week working on the garage, mudroom, and basement, and then Dad came back for another week. That was fun. Hopefully they’ll come back for more :) We’ve had a few days off from school and are just kicking around. Here are a few pictures from the past few days. I’ll let you know if life gets more interesting. :)
Lex made a really cool K’Nex car and started parking it under the little table. He called it a garage, but Alan corrected him a few times saying it was “a carport, because garages have walls.” So Lex made some walls. What I love about his walls is that the left and right sides are perfectly symmetrical and mirror images. The back wall is a symmetrical pattern as well. I love the design work. And the car is cool too :)
The kids got little plant kits for Christmas from Jim, Julie, and Molly. Lex got a “body snatcher plant” (eats insects) and Eve got a “sensitive plant” (closes when you touch it). We planted them the other day and it took me A LOT of convincing to get Lex to allow us to plant his. He only wanted to do Eve’s because he was afraid of the body snatcher plant :) I eventually read the package word for word and emphasized the eats insects part and he settled down. Crazy kid.

Isn't this cool? They are supposed to stay in the bag until shoots appear. I think it keeps the plants warmer and moister.

These are the moments I love. They decided to play a game together and after some discussion it was decided that the only game Eve is good at is Candlyand (true and it was her opinion that settled the issue) so they played, happily and all on their own. So sweet.

Alan went down to visit his mom today to bring her home from the hospital so the kids made pictures for him to take along. Lex used stencils to make a house with a garage and a pond (and then later was very upset that he forgot to put a chimney on the house). Eve made pink lines and squiggles and traced her hand (she's very good at that).
Winter photos
We had warmer temps and good snowfall yesterday and today and I managed to get the kids out for a bit. Sometimes it’s like pulling teeth to get them outside, but then they always have a blast. We did some shoveling and I pulled them on the sled and we took a walk up the street and discovered a snow tunnel that someone had dug. It was nice. I love the warmer weather :)
The new mudroom
I have the most awesome men in my life who built me a super cool mudroom. Check it out! It still needs paint and coat hooks and a door into the garage (kind of an important thing!) but otherwise it’s done. We love it!
Solo Playdate
Lex went on his first unaccompanied playdate today. His friend’s mom picked them up after school and took them home. He had lunch there and played and I picked him up an hour and a half later. I was nervous! Why? Well, I don’t know the family (though mom is very nice at school) and didn’t know the house (though i had the address) and mostly I was just nervous about my little boy growing up. Over the past few days we’ve talked about good manors and whether or not he had to eat the lunch she served him and what to do if he came across dangerous items. I’m nervous about guns because there are so many hunters in this area and Lex has zero experience with real guns and very minimal experience with toy guns, which, overall is A-OK by me. So we talked about if he saw guns, real or toys, or knives or anything else that he though might be dangerous, to just walk away. He’s a good boy.
I took Eve to a storytime that we usually can’t go to because of the 11am preschool pickup. It was nice to be with friends and not home wondering about Lex. Again, not that I had any good reason to worry, just nervous about this “first.” I put Eve down for a nap (thanks Grandpa Tom for being here to stay with her!) and went to pick up Lex. Guess what? Crazy thing. The family lives in a house we looked at when we ended up buying this one. I, of course, didn’t know what was in the house, but I knew the house very well! Apparently they bought it a year after we were looking and the owner was very eager to sell. I remember that it had already been on the market for awhile when we looked at it. :)
I’m sure it goes without saying that Lex had a great time. She fed him a PB&J sandwich for lunch and he ate the “emergency” granola bar I had sent with him. They played games (“Mom, she even has Sorry!”) and had fun. Whew!
Wild child
A few weeks ago Lex and I went to a birthday party for a boy in his class. Most of the kids there were WILD, running around, yelling, pretend punching, drinking red punch and eating chips. It was nuts. I stayed because I didn’t know the family at all and was hesitant to leave him. I’m happy I stayed because twice during the party he came over and asked to be held for a few minutes. He’s so sweet. Anyway, at the party I met the dad of another boy who was, like Lex, playing fairly quietly. We got to chatting about how our boys aren’t the “jump in the action and run around like wild people” kind of kids, instead they are a little more reserved and tend to hang back. Later I asked Lex if he’d like to have a playdate with this other boy (who is also in his class). He said “oh yes!” so we invited them over. Lex was super excited and today was the day. Can you guess what my reserved boy did? Yep, ran around like a wild child!! Lex and Eve both were running, somersaulting, jumping, and showering this poor dad with “look at me, look at me” requests, while his son played quietly in the corner. I take solace in that fact that at least they were energetic and polite, they weren’t rough or violent, they weren’t rude, but they were hepped up!! After awhile they calmed down a bit and the other boy warmed up a bit and all three of them had a great time playing together. It was fun. I was laughing though, recalling our earlier conversation about quiet boys. That dad must have thought I was totally full of it! :)
Goodbye daycare
Eve’s daycare class made her this card. Isn’t it cool! (yes, they call her Eva, like the Wall-E movie) It’s huge too. She loves it. I’ve been feeling sad lately about daycare and missing it even though we haven’t even gone a whole week yet! Several times in the past few days the kids have said or done something that impressed me and when I asked where they learned it, the answer was, of course, at daycare. Lex likes to talk about the different books they have there and the games they play. Eve looks at her card many, MANY times a day and tells me about all the pictures and what was happening then and who the kids are. I think they really liked it there. I know we will find new routines and things to do, but it was nice to have that consistency of schedule and people, something you don’t really get at playgroups. Sigh. All good things must come to an end, I know, and I keep reminding myself that there will be more opportunities ahead.
On another note, we’ve had a busy week. My dad and brother were here doing some serious work in our garage! Alan built the framing for a mudroom in the garage and Dad and B were doing the sheetrock and other work on it. I’m so excited! I haven’t used the garage since late summer, but when it’s finally done it will be mostly a finished garage with a warm(ish) area to take off muddy boots and wet coats. No more dragging that muck into the kitchen! Yay!! I have pretty awesome men in my family!!
Love letters
Finally, a loop!!
Alan has been working hard on the basement and yesterday the kids got their first experience with a complete loop to run. Yay! We didn’t have the camera down there then, but this evening they were both bursting with annoying energy (not just energy, but that agitating kind that drives you crazy) so when Alan came home he brought them down to the basement for awhile. I sent the camera along. They both feel asleep easily after that! Alan takes pretty long videos (4 minutes) but it’s fun and gives you a nice tour of the basement too. Next week it should look even cooler!
