Mixed messages (33 wk appt)

I had my 33 week check-up this morning. It
was a long morning. We started at the dentist for an 8:45 appt
(all good there), then to the hospital to pre-register for the
delivery, then up to see the midwives for an 11:40 appt. Lex
was perfect, but definitely exhausted by the end and he was
asleep pretty quick when we got in the car to come home.

As anyone reading this probably knows, I’m
seeing the midwife team at the hospital. There are five or six
of them and you’re supposed to see all of them throughout your
prental care, with the idea being that you’ll be comfortable
with whomever is on call the day you deliver. They do the same
thing with the doctors. This is apparently common. Didn’t work
so well with Lex since I saw four of them and never met the
woman who ended up delivering him. Quite honestly though, it
doesn’t matter much in the heat of the moment. Anyway, I say
all of this to say that one drawback to this method is that
there is the potential for conflicting information and mixed
messages. On the plus side, you can get a second opinion just
by asking the same question at your next appointment (different
midwife).

For example, last time I was
there I asked if there was any correlation between when you
deliver your first baby and your second. Since Lex came 8 days
late I was wondering if I’d be more or less likely to deliver
this next one late as well… or no relation at all. The
midwife last time told me that you tend to deliver around the
same time, so if baby 1 is late, odds are good baby 2 will be
late as well. Maybe not as late, but late. Of course, this is
all just odds and nothing is for sure… but that’s all I was
looking for. I mentioned this at today’s appointment and
today’s midwife told me there is absolutely no correlation
there at all. So even though I delivered Lex 8 days late, my
chances are equally good to deliver 8 days early this time…
or late… or who knows. She said that there is no way to even
begin to guess when the baby may come. Both sounded equally
confident though, so how do you know who to believe? I guess
I’ll go with today’s opinion because… well, why not?
Gah!

Also, and this doesn’t surprise me
at all, the midwife last time did some bad math and my weight
gain was actually 23lbs, not 13lbs. I was surprised by 13 and I
think 23 is more accurate to how I feel these days. Now I’m up
to 27lbs (but in my defense, most of my appts are at 8:30am and
this one was at 11:40am and I didn’t take my winter boots
off!). I need to start being more careful though because
loosing the weight is much harder than I ever expected.

Baby is also measuring big this time around. I
guess this isn’t a problem now (perhaps just a recent growth
spurt), but if baby continues measuring big over the next few
check-ups, we may need to go in for another ultrasound. She
said most likely I’m just carrying a bigger baby than Lex…
which also matches well with how I feel these days. Hell, half
the time I’m carrying a bigger baby *and* Lex!!

Belly @ 32 weeks

It occurred to me tonight that I haven’t
taken any belly pictures this pregnancy. Guess the novelty of
showing the world my big ol’ belly wore off the first time
around :) But, since I keep telling you all how huge it is,
here is proof. I hope I can handle 8 more weeks of
growth…

It does make a great seat for Lex
though…

And for comparison, here is a
picture of the belly (with Lex inside) at 30 weeks last time
around. Definitely bigger this time, don’t you think? Must be
the weakened stomach muscles. My abs of steel (hehehe) are no
longer…

Big belly

We’re coming into the final stretch of
this pregnancy now… just a few more months to go :) I like
being pregnant though. Have I mentioned that? It’s especially
neat now that baby is very active and Alan and I can both feel
good kicks. I’ve also started taking a prenatal yoga class,
which is a good way to stretch and whatever, but also a nice
hour and a half each week to remind myself that I’m pregnant.
The instructor started the first class with a few minutes of
breathing and thinking about the baby. I never get that kind of
time at home! Always thinking about the big baby who’s tackling
me, jumping on me, or begging for a book. Lex, that is, not
Alan ;) So once a week I get to relax, stretch with other
pregnant mommies, and think about this new little bundle of joy
who will soon be joining our happy family. It’s nice.

There are, of course, aches and pains and I’m
gaining way too much weight (Alan dug out the scale the other
day — sad, sad day), but overall I like being
pregnant!

Asleep in the new bed

My little man is awesome! I just love
him.

I told you about Friday’s nap (or
nap process, anyway) and how he ended up back in the crib.
Friday night we went out to Alan’s company’s holiday party. It
was at the local science museaum and everyone had fun. We
didn’t get home until 10:00pm though, so we put him right into
the toddler bed and he fell asleep in about 5 minutes. Today we
decided to try Love & Logic (this is what my lost post from
last weekend was about) on him. We asked if he wanted to take
his nap in the new bed or the crib (he chose new bed, of
course), so we put him down in the new bed. We told him that he
needs to stay in the bed and not get up. Then Alan and I sat
down outside his door. Lex stayed in bed for almost 10 minutes,
talking to himself and doggie, but then he got up and came over
to the door. This part kind of broke my heart. I opened the
door and he gave me a big grin and said “HI” :) I picked him up
and said “So sad. (his face dropped) If you can’t stay in the
new bed then you have to take your nap in the crib.” He wailed.
We put him down in the crib. He wailed for a few minutes,
occaisionally saying “so sad,” then fell asleep pretty quickly.
Tonight we did the regular bedtime routine (home at a decent
hour, that’s always a good start) and asked again if he wanted
to sleep in his new bed or the crib. He chose the new bed, of
course. So we put him down and reminded him that he has to stay
in the bed and not get up. I sat outside his door for 30
minutes, listening to him talk to himself, recite almost all of
Goodnight Moon and several nursery rhymes. At one point he even
said “doggie sit in chair, doggie in chair” and I was all
prepared to go in there, but then he said “no, no, no, stay in
new bed.” So smart!! I did have to go in once because he fell
out of the bed and hit the floor, crying, saying “hurt self,
hurt self.” :) I went in and hugged him and put him back in the
bed. He was happy. Now he’s asleep in his new bed! I love
him!!

And as I write this the new baby
is rumbling in my belly. Sometimes I get very direct kicks (or
elbows, punches, who knows…), but othertimes the baby just
rolls over or something and my whole belly rumbles. It’s so
cool. We hit 30 weeks this week. Eeek…. March is going to be
here in no time!

Holiday update

I had my 28wk checkup today. I think I’m
only 27 1/2 weeks, but close enough. Baby is doing great. The
midwife found its heartbeat immediately and was impressed with
how strong it is. I’ve given up weighing myself since we moved
here, so I was surprised with my weight gain, but whatever. I
just need to be sure to loose it all after this baby! (famous
last words, huh?)

We had a great
holiday. This year Lex understands presents and how to open
them, but doesn’t yet have the expectations of Christmas. I
thought that made for a nice combination. He got lots of toys
and stuff.

I’m pretty sure he woke up
from his nap yesterday about 6 times smarter than he went to
bed too. He suddenly is using question words, counting to 20
(skips a few in the teens, but real close), and speaking in
sentences. It’s weird, but cool. The midwives today were
surprised that he’s only 19 months (even though one of them was
there at his delivery!)

The other
midwife is new (still in training, I think) and she commented
on how neat it must have been to be born on the Farm. I thought
that was funny. I mentioned it with my first pregnancy and I
guess now it’s in my permenant record :) She was gushing about
how Ina May is her inspiration.

One
thing I learned today at my appointment is that the rumor that
2nd babies come faster is very accurate. And it’s accurate per
person, not just on average. They said that since my labor with
Lex was so quick I should make a point to come to the hospital
sooner with the next baby and they would likely admit me
earlier because they will be anticipating a fast delivery.
Cool! Can’t let myself get too excited, but let’s hope it works
out that way :)

Off to bathe the boy
now. Happy New Year to all!

Tiny baby kicks

I felt baby kick today! Lex and I were
wrestling on the floor and he was climbing on my and basically
gently kicking my belly. Then he jumped up to look out the
window (a big truck drove by) and I started feeling tiny baby
kicks from inside. I think baby wanted to play with Lex :) I
felt them a few other times later in the day, so I’m certain
they are kicks.

I’m at 18 weeks now and
we have our regular 18wk ultrasound tomorrow morning. I’ll try
and post another picture, but I’m guessing it’s going to look a
lot like the last one :)

The house is
coming along well. Just a few more days until we move. I’m a
big mess of excitement, nervousness, and pure exhaustion. I’ll
be happy when the whole thing is done and we’re in the new
house. Just a few more days….

Some thoughts

It’s been a few days, so here are a few
unrelated thoughts for you.

My smart boy
Lex
grows smarter by the minute and his communication skills have
really taken off. He can now use two word phrases, which is
sometimes helpful (“more milk”) and sometimes just silly (“big
clock”). He’s fascinated with clocks and points them out
everywhere we go. He still confuses clocks and gauges, like the
speedometer or a pressure gauge, but that’s an understandable
mistake. He also tries very hard to repeat everything I say and
seems to be picking up new words rapidly. I love it. The other
day I was zoning into my computer and he came running in (with
his silly, silly run) saying “help, help” and doing the sign as
he ran. When he got to me he pointed to his sippy cup which was
stuck in his overall buckles :) He pointed to the cup, said and
signed “help” and pointed to the cup again. So smart!
(excluding the fact that he got his sippy cup stuck in his
overalls, of course :) ). So I unhooked the cup and handed it
to him. He immediately handed it back and said and signed “more
milk.” The cup was empty. He ran to the fridge and said/signed
“more milk” again. Soooo smart!! He also has been peeing on the
potty once or twice a day lately, and on his own accord. He’ll
sit right down on the potty (clothes and all) or come get me
and bring me to his potty. Then, once the diaper is off, he
sits right down and pees.

My fears
Like I
said, some unrelated thoughts here. The house is moving along
nicely. The flooring guy comes on Monday for the week so dad
and crew are putting in some overtime to be sure we’re ready
for him. I wish so much I could go over and help too. As much
as I love the little man, he’s definitely not good to have
around at a construction site. So my visits are just that –
short and social. Then I leave and the work continues. Anyway,
my biggest fear right now is that they will get done and I’ll
look around and think “Oh my god, I can’t believe I chose
that color!” We have been making so many
decisions and I’m just hoping that when we put it all together
it actually looks good :) I can’t even imagine the scary
decisions you have to make when you build a house from scratch.
Oh well. I guess if I have to have fears, those are ok ones to
have.

My little
one

The little one inside seems to be
coming along nicely. My belly is definitely sticking out these
days. We have an appointment in 2 weeks for another ultrasound
and the morning sickness, for the most part, has passed. Not
much else to report. I was looking at my baby blog for Lex and
saw that I felt the first kicks around 19 weeks. I’m looking
forward to that again. It’s a pretty cool feeling having
someone growing inside you. We saw a great shirt awhile back
that said “I grow people.” Made me laugh.
