Ole!

Lex has been studying Mexico in class. They learned about the language, culture, holidays, schools, etc. The project expended to music, art, and library. The unit culminated tonight with a play of the book, Musicians Of The Sun. It was so cute!

They have been practicing for weeks now and Lex has been walking around singing songs in Spanish. He even taught Eve the final dance and they were dancing in the kitchen one day.

Tonight was the big night. He was SO excited! The best part was that he wasn’t even nervous. After last year’s Three Piggy Opera and all the nervous drama that went with it, this year’s performance was a non-issue. He didn’t even mention it until the practices were well under way and I don’t think he was the least bit nervous!

No more reading at the table – An update!

After a month or so of my “no reading at the table” plan I figured I’d post a quick update. I know how much you all are concerned with the dining situation at my house.

Overall the plan has been a success! Lex’s table manners have improved and he is no long as sloppy and disgusting to eat with. He thinks and plans and joins in the conversation. He laughs and participates. This evening I decided to start our annual “thankfuls” at the dinner table. With no fuss Lex jumped right in with a thoughtful thankful.

That said, there is one down-side to the plan… Lex no longer eats!! That’s maybe a slight exaggeration, but in the past he would plop down with a book, check out, and eat whatever you put in front of him (with some limitations, of course). Now he bounces around in his seat, chats, laughs, gets up, sits down, fidgets with whatever he can reach and doesn’t eat! (that doesn’t actually sound like very good table manners, does it?!) Sometimes I have to set a timer for him or take his food away at a certain time, just so we can move on with the day. I swear his calorie intake, and books read, has been cut in half!

Sigh. I guess you can’t win them all. But at least he’s less messy and gross to eat with. :)

No more reading at the table

A week or two ago, on a whim, I declared a “no reading at the table” rule. For those of you who know my house, this is a big change. A big change for Lex and I anyway. He was not happy. I was a little uncertain in my declaration, but I wanted to give it a try. Guess what? It has been a stellar success! (So far.)

I made the rule because he grabs a book for every meal and completely tunes out the world. He eats very messily, doesn’t pay attention to what he’s doing, doesn’t pay attention to us, and then sits at the table, completely spaced out, and reads until someone takes the book away. Two weeks ago he started coming home with a homework assignment to read for 20 minutes a night and write two sentences. I figured this would be a piece of cake for him but he continually insists that he doesn’t remember what he reads. That was the final straw. Making a mess, spacing out, and not even remembering? Not worth it!

Now he doesn’t read nearly as much, but he has better table manners and participates in the discussion and is generally a much more pleasant person to dine with. Yay!

The downside, for me, is that I also like to read at the table! Sometimes I sneak it in when no one is around, but I’m trying to break myself of the habit as well. I find myself much more attentive to the kids and participating more in the conversation, particularly with Eve, when I don’t have a magazine in front of me taking up 80% of my attention. My magazine pile is suffering, but the rest of us are doing fine! :)

Sports

Lex has recently expressed interest in sports. Hockey, in particular. Several of his classmates play on a team and they brought a trophy in for show and tell. Lex was duly impressed. He described the entire thing to me, every little detail, after school that day.

This week he brought home a hockey book from school and we’ve decided that we, as a family, will learn how to skate this winter. I may take him to a Dartmouth game or maybe take him to watch his classmates play.

It’s an interesting situation though. I think he’s at the age where he is naturally starting to develop an interest in this kind of thing. I know another mother with kids the same age who is facing the same situation. The problem is, so many of his classmates have been playing since they were four! Or even younger, in some sports! Soccer starts for 2yr olds around here. Seriously?! So when the child is seven and starting to develop their own ideas and interests, they are already too old. Geesh!

Lex says he really wants to play on the hockey team with his classmates, but that won’t happen any time soon. I told him we could learn about hockey (rules, etc.) and learn to skate, then we’ll take it from there. He’ll probably lose interest anyway.

Parenting is so interesting and ever evolving. You don’t want to (well, I don’t want to!) force them into over-scheduled lives just so they don’t miss out on things, but at the same time it’s sad when they express interest in something all of their over-scheduled friends are doing and they can’t do because they weren’t born on skates. One of Eve’s classmates, a tiny little 5yr old girl, will be joining a hockey team this fall. Her mom asked if Eve wanted to join too. I told her we’re working on learning to skate this year and I’ll get back to her next year. :)

Love notes from Lex

Look what I found on my bed last night.

whole note

“Find the five hidden doors. :)”

A love note from my boy! Full of little windows to open. So cute!

top windows

“Dear Mom, I love you so much. Love, Lex”
“Look under your pillow for another note.”

door three

“Here’s a picture for you! Do you like it? __Yes __No”
Like anyone could say no to that?!

door four

“I love you, Mom!”
The smiley face pops up. A little trick he learned in a book and loves putting in cards.

door five

“Read my note!” The note says “I <3 U" and was tucked inside a little pocket he made with tape and paper.[/caption] [caption id="attachment_8710" align="aligncenter" width="500"]under the pillow front Here is the note that was under my pillow. It says “I love you”

under the pillow inside

Who could for ask for more!?!

Is that not the sweetest thing ever?! Truth be told I knew he was working on it. He spent hours on it yesterday morning, not-so-sneakily hiding it each time I got near him. I love how much effort he puts into his projects. I love the beautiful colors. I love Lex!

Hello veggies!

Lex ate almost an entire bowl (grown-up sized bowl, not a little kid snack bowl!) of snow peas before dinner (Eve ate the rest) and this evening, as we were cuddling on the couch watching TV because he couldn’t sleep, he ate a ton of baby carrots!  I was sharing the carrots and when we got near the end he took a the rest as a big handful!

I think that is more veggies than he’s eaten in the entire rest of this year!!  Add that to the watermelon at lunch, pear at snack, and smoothie popsicle for dessert and I think the boy got his nutrients for the day!  Finally!!
