Ticks and lice and nothing nice

Warning: reading this post will make you itchy all over. Consider yourself warned!

For the past many years I have kept my head buried pretty deep in the sand when it comes to the whole tick thing. When the kids were younger I’d check them, sometimes, in the bath, but that was the extent of my tick related efforts. This year, however, they are consuming my thoughts.

Maybe it’s because we started letting Daisy go outside a few weeks ago and within days we discovered a big, fat tick on her back. Alan and I spent a long time that night attempting to remove it, resulting in fur and cat scratches everywhere. Alan eventually managed to sneak in on her when she was sleeping and get it off. Thankfully! I was texting with my friend off and on during and she said to leave it alone, it will fall off, happens all the time, etc. I was so grossed out!! She sleeps in Lex’s bed and cuddles with the kids and blech!

The next day we got her a flea collar. She is now the dorkiest cat on the block, wearing not one, but TWO collars around her neck. Lucky kitty. A few days later we found another tick on her. Ugh!

Or maybe it is because the ticks are everywhere this year. Two days after the Daisy/tick incident I discovered a tick crawling up the back of one of my kiddos at school. He was laying on my lap being fussy so I started rubbing his back. A moment later I said, “what’s this bump on your back?” I pulled up his shirt and found a tick crawling up his back. YUCK!! I did not react calmly, instead I practically dragged this poor kid around by his shirt trying to get to a good place to dispose of the tick. At the Montessori school we respect all life and gently escort bugs and spiders outside, but this tick when straight down the toilet, despite gasps from the little kids!

A few days after that one of the teachers discovered something that looked like it might be a head lice nit in the hair of a child. The teacher showed me the nit, told me all about checking the child’s hair, and so that became the primary topic of conversation between the teachers for the next few days. So far (knock on lots and lots of wood!) we haven’t seen anything else or heard any reports from families.

However, between all these buggy incidents I am now totally paranoid! Every time I have an itch I feel the need to check for ticks, or lice – nothing nice!

Eve and I participated in a Girl Scout event this morning that had us traipsing through the forest. I insisted she and I both wear long sleeves, long pants, socks tucked in, and hair back with hats on. One of her friends said, “Eve, it’s summer time, you don’t need to wear long sleeves,” and Eve fired back “I found two ticks on me and do you know why they didn’t bite me? Long sleeves!!”

Are you thoroughly itchy now?! I am!! I hate bug spray almost as much as I hate sunscreen (well, maybe more) but this might be the year I try it again. Or maybe I could get us all tick anklets?

Happy summer! ;)

A Mother’s Day Present

I was helping Eve clean up her room before bed this evening and feeling kind of frustrated with her and her messy room. She has so much stuff and it’s just everywhere. I opened her closet and was putting away doll clothes when I noticed something tucked in the back corner. I said said to her, with the exasperation clear in my voice, “Oh Eve, why do you have a live plant in your closet?!” So weird and random and totally something she would do. She jumped up and said, “Oh Mom!” and at the moment I remembered her scurrying upstairs after school with a small paper bag in her hands, and realized, oops, I think I found my Mother’s Day present! She made me promise to forget all about it (yeah, this is me forgetting) so I could be surprised on Sunday. The exchange totally put things in perspective and reminded me how sweet these years are, despite the messy room. I am a lucky momma.

Saturday night update: I just went into Eve’s dark room to check on her (I do that when they sleep), and I saw a weird glow coming from that same closet. I opened the door and found that she had hung a flash light from a hanger so that it shined down on to the plant! It casts an eerie glow through the slats of the closet door, but I love the thought. She’s sweet and clever!

There goes another tooth!

Eve lost another tooth today.  The top, right canine.  These days it is so much more mundane than it was in the early days.  I knew she had a few loose ones in there, but she told me last night that her tooth was about to fall out. I felt it and boy was she right!  She wanted a treasure box from school though, so she didn’t wiggle too much.  Today she said a friend taught her out to get them out (“Just twist and pull. Easy!”) and she got her treasure box.  :-)

The tooth fairy usually brings her gold dollars coins, which she never spends, but she said tonight that she was hoping for a dollar bill so she could add it to her doll savings.  I told her she can add the gold coins too, but she said they are way too pretty to spend.  :-)  The tooth fairy left a crisp dollar bill with a red heart stamped on it.  I hope that’s not too pretty to spend!

Easter weekend

We had a busy weekend!  Easter fell just after Eve’s birthday so we did a little celebrating of both.  Friday afternoon we had friends over to play (and my bestie over for tea!), Rosy came to visit, and Alan and I went to a late-night dinner party.  We were all tired by the end of Friday, but that was just the beginning.

image

First tree climb of the season, I think.

Saturday included a trip to GemStar, cake baking, egg decorating, painting, and more.  Then Alan brought home a movie and is grownups were up until midnight! That made two nights in a row!

image

Rosy was in need of a few original pieces of artwork so she commissioned two little painters.

image

Boring mommy made them move to the table because painting on the floor was just too messy!

image

While they painted I did a little creative work of my own.

Oh yes, and Easter basket filling, of course!

image

Pretty table, all ready for Easter morning..

image

I like my own decorations. :-) I was excited to find these sugar eggs on Etsy. I have find memories of them in my own Easter basket as a child, and the eternal question as to whether or not to eat them.

Sunday was Easter, so we started the day with candy for breakfast.  Of course. The egg hunts, a trip to the playground, a little birthday party, and early bedtimes!

image

There was no question for Eve. Sugar? Eat it!

image

We had the usual Easter egg hunts. The kids still love looking for eggs!

image

My masterpiece! Eve's final cake for this birthday. As usual it was an ever evolving project. I love how it came out.

image

We did a few outdoor egg hunts as well, but it was chilly out there!

image

There is still a fair amount of snow on the ground too! We were hiding eggs in snow banks.

image

Daisy ran from window to window trying to keep track of everybody outside.

image

Daddy attack! :-)

image

Mad dash for an egg Alan hid up high. :-)

image

Good thing Rosy was here. She took us on a walk to the playground to shoot some hoops.

image

Aunt Katie and Popcube came over for awhile to hang out and eat cake. Eve was pretty wound up by this point!

image

This giant slab of cake didn't help matters much.

image

It's not perfect, but I'm pretty proud of how the cake turned out. I love the vivid colors! Rainbow parties are great!

image

Alan sliced it in an odd way. This looks like a cake tunnel. Yum!

After cake the kids proceeded to flail around on the floor, wrestling and laughing like sugared up wild ones!  The crash came about 15 minutes later, but some alone time and iPad time helped settle everyone down.

That about (almost) wraps up Eve’s 8th birthday and Easter 2015.  Now for a few weeks of sugar detox!

Eve is Eight!

I thought it would be fun to do an “eight for eight” post with the eight best pictures of the day… but then I thought, “who am I kidding?!” I take way too many pictures and like to share them all. So, here is a look at Miss Eve’s 8th birthday.

image

My customary birthday display. The kids now come to expect them. I like to add my own gifts, but also little things from other people, like the cat card from Greg and Kathy, and the Happy Birthday note from the Kirkwoods. Lots of love for Eve from around the country.

image

Happy Birthday Eve!!

image

I got her some books, some science and craft idea kits, and an American Girl matching outfit. Lex got her a Lego Friends set.  She was pretty happy with all of it.

image

I love Lex’s look in this picture. :)

image

I tried several times today to get a nice picture of the two of us together. This one obviously didn’t work out.

image

This isn’t quite right either! :)

image

After school we had two friends over. I fed them all snack then we headed to the science museum!

image

I mostly like this picture. Great sunlight and color. However, where are Eve’s eyes?! Pictures with glasses are tough!

image

The museum has several great new exhibits! We had a great time!

image

Buddies.

image

Eve wanted to go to Panera Bread for her birthday dinner. I told her she could get a birthday treat and she chose a strawberry smoothie “all to myself!” Normally when she gets a smoothie the rest of us share it with her, but tonight she had one, with whipped cream, all to herself.

image

I really wanted a nice picture of us together so I finally recruited Alan to help. The back camera on my phone is much better than the front camera!

image

We all got a little silly.

image

Daddy wanted in on the picture too! :)

Happy Birthday to Eve! We are pretty lucky to have her in our lives!

Eve’s Birthday Sleepover – Part 2

The sleepover went well. I sent the girls to bed at 8:30pm and they continued to play and be wild. At 9pm I turned off the lights. The silliness continued (in part it was my fault because I provided them with glow sticks!) I was typing last nights blog post and wondering what to do next. What is proper sleepover protocol? Do I just let them stay up until they pass out? Do I insist on quiet? Separate them? Then I realized that it’s my house and I can do whatever the heck I want! I took away the glow sticks and reminded them it was sleeping time. Later I heard crying and discovered that Eve had bitten the one remaining glow stick in the room (bitten?!) and broke it. She had glow stick filling all over her hands, her PJs, her sleeping bag, and her mouth! Normally this would be a panic-inducing moment, but actually it happened once before so I did all the necessary panicking (and Googling) last time, so this time I was calm, cool, and collected. Secretly hoping that Eve’s tears would be the final straw before sleep. But nope, they rallied! :) Finally they fell asleep around 10:45 and I went to bed. Not to bad for a first sleepover.

I was hoping they’d sleep in a bit, but of course, nope! All three kids were up at 6:30am. Alan and I made it until 7:00. Not too bad, right?! :) I made rainbow pancakes and everyone just hung out.

image

Rainbow pancakes! Yum!

image

This isn’t a very good crop and I can’t edit on the computer… and my phone is in the other room… so anyway, Eve and her Girl Scout friend loved the Wizard Of Id comic this morning.

Also this morning I got a text from a friend asking if I could watch her boys for a little while. Sure, I said, why not?! Eve’s friend left, and I had time for a quick shower before the boys came over. Fortunately my kiddos kept it together and played very nicely with the boys. They ended up staying for quite awhile and everyone had fun.

image

These two decided to start a “Save the animals” club and spent quite awhile making invitations for other friends and making info cards about endangered animals.

image

Save the Animals.

After everyone left (including Alan who went to the gym), the kids and I crashed. We had lunch and read some Percy Jackson until I fell asleep on the couch. Then the kids retired to their rooms for more reading.

image

I just want to take a million pictures of this beautiful girl laying in the sunshine.

image

She made a nest of blankets and read in the sunshine. I love this girl! I can’t believe she’s almost eight!

And so wraps up our first birthday celebration. One down, two to go. :)
