Awesomeness

We have an awesome school. In case you weren’t aware, October is National Bully Awareness Month and our school is tackling that issue head on! Our school councelors have done an amazing job of exploring bullying prevention and the students, from pre-k up to 5th, are all familiar with the three signs of bullying and what to do about it. We have excellent examples of students standing up for one another in school, on the bus, and out of school. Ask any kid and they will tell you exactly what bullying is and how it can be stopped. Last year the 4th grade did a powerful song/dance about the “bully machine” and this year the councelors took it a step further and organized an entire day, Unity Day (inspired by Pacer’s National Bullying Prevention Center)

All week the students have been making signs and banners, pencil toppers, wrist bands, and more to prepare for the big day. The school got bright orange “Otters Don’t Bully” t-shirts and decked the halls in orange, the official color of bullying prevention.

The local news came to our 5th grade classroom on Monday to do a story on our Unity Day preparations. That was pretty of cool.

Last night the kids worked hard to decorate their bikes and scooters for the special themed Walk and Ride To School day. They do “walk and ride” every week, but today’s was extra special.

Lex’s signs. He even had a written plan as to where to put each sign on his bike.

We got the bike and scooter decorated last night, so they would be all set for this morning.

This morning we got dressed in our matching bright orange shirts. I didn’t buy Alan one. Not sure how well bright orange and “Otters Don’t Bully” would have gone over in the office. :) At school, however, we blended right in with the crowd!

shirts

We all wore matching bright orange shirts today. :)

I don’t have pictures from the day, unfortunately, but it was a ton of fun. We had record number of students, parents, and siblings on the bike path, sporting orange and carrying anti-bullying signs. I’m sure pictures will be posted soon on the school website. Several have been posted on the school’s Facebook page already. We had an assembly in the morning where they showed videos students had made, built a chain of bullying prevention messages, had a performance by the 4/5th grade chorus (with a special surprise from the teachers!) and even had a special guest, Charleigh Gere, a local middle school student who is making a stand. (Watch her amazing video here.)

Our Unity Day dance. Listen to the kids cheer when the second round of teachers comes in. Too funny!

Anyway, overall an amazing day. We have great school councelors and an awesome school community. So proud to be a part of it!!

One Wise Owl

Lex came home with an award today.  He’s a Wise Owl.

He is a wise owl!

One wise owl!

Isn’t that cool?! He gets to keep the owl and the box (he’s holding the lid to the box in the picture above) for one month, then he has to bring it to school for the next Wise Owl. He gets to keep the certificate of course forever. He said he’s the first Wise Owl this year. He was pretty proud. :)

game

Lex made a puzzle for us this weekend. He made little check boxes at the bottom to make sure we all did it. :) I like this kind of mental challenge… although this one wasn’t too challenging! :)

This Wise Owl made a puzzle game for us to complete this weekend. I always liked this type of puzzle in the game books I used to get as a kid. He is so clever and creative. :)

Open house

Open house was tonight. It was very different than it has been in the past. For starters, my day went like this:
7:30am – parent meeting at school
8:15am – UVEI all day
3:30pm – errands
4:45pm – pick up kids from daycare, feed, and change them (Lex was a mess!)
6:00pm – open house, but this time I sent my kids to sit with friends while I stood in the teacher line! Alan got there a few minutes later, so I didn’t totally ditch my kids with others.
6:15pm – Hanging out in 5th grade. Eve was with a friend and Lex was with Alan. I’m chit-chatting with my 5th graders and their parents.
6:45pm – Sneak (not really) out to dash over to Lex’s room. He had a ton he wanted to show me, but he was spacey and couldn’t focus so we only got through a bit of it.
7:00pm (after the “closing time” announcement) – quick stop at Eve’s room. No one there. Fortunately the teacher is super nice so we stayed and chatted for a few minutes and she didn’t kick us out. :)
7:15pm – heading home with two tired kids. Actually, Alan took Lex home, so I only had one tired one in my car. Then all the usual snack (since dinner was early), shower, stories, etc.
8:15pm – homework! I’m writing my first lesson plan and I’ll be teaching on Thursday, so I wanted to get it done tonight to review with my mentor tomorrow.
9:30pm – Shutting down! Literally and figuratively. Morning comes early these days.

I missed wandering around with my kids, taking pictures of their work, and chatting with their teachers. Instead we rushed through the whole thing. Alan was there with them, but he doesn’t have the guided path of open house, he just followed behind them while they did whatever. :) I guess this is one of the many times I’ll have to switch hats (teacher/parent) quickly and only be partially present for both. Overall a good night though, not complaining.

Would you like my to post my full schedule every day? :)

We survived the first week!

We survived week one of 1st, 3rd, and 5th grade! Luckily it was a short week because we are all TIRED today. School is great though! For everyone! Lex loves his teacher and was excited that they are allowed to chew gum in school now. Eve loves her teacher and her class. They are both pretty chill about it all. Old pros at this school thing.

I’m having fun with the 5th graders. We have a great class this year. They are friendly and funny and nice to one another. I got to teach my first lesson yesterday and another mini-lessons/UVEI assignment today. My mentor teacher is super supportive and encouraging. There are three 5th grades and the teachers work very well as a cohesive team. They are even doing rotating classes with “homerooms” this year, so my mentor teacher teaches writing/language arts to all three homeroom classes. Basically he’s teaching the same lesson three times a day. Yesterday I taught it the third time, after watching him the first two. :) Today I rotated with my homeroom class, so I got to see all three teachers teach their subjects. It was interesting to see their different styles and their different room setups and how they interacted differently with the same class. So much to learn! Our team meetings are really useful for me to learn what teachers watch for in student behaviors and development, what’s par for the course and what’s a red flag.

My kids are adapting to our new routine with the expected amount of overtired fussing. Alan walked them into their classrooms the first three days, but left them in the hall today. Lex apparently had a hard time with that. He told me all about it after school. Alan is weaning them off the morning drop-off routine that I’ve done for years (because I liked it) and moving to a drop at the door system, like most other parents do. They will be fine with it… eventually. :) It’s a year of transition for all of us.

Now we have a four day weekend and then another four day week. Time to recuperate and get caught up on some sleep!

More later. For now, a picture of Eve’s silliness this evening:

toothbrushes

That looks like a good place to keep the toothbrushes, right?

The first day of school!

Today was the first day of school. I wanted to be at school at 7:00am (I got there by 7:10 so there’s room for improvement tomorrow!) and Alan brought the kids in at 8:00am. I wasn’t confident in his ability to remember to take pictures, in part because he assured me he would not remember, so I had the kids dressed and ready for pictures at 6:50am. :) Don’t we look snazzy?!

three

First day back to school and we have smiles all around! The color coordination was pure coincidence.

two

Just the two of them… notice Lex is wearing the same shirt as last year? :)

I wish we had a really nice clean wall or hardwood door or something to take these pictures. They look a little trashy with our screen door and unswept porch, but it is what it is. It’s also been cool and rainy for the past two years when I’ve taken these pictures!

eve

Eve.

Everyone had a great day. The kids both came home happy and tired. Not too chatty, but I think that will come as they settle in. I enjoyed my class, and really enjoyed working with a teacher in the room. Sooo much easier than subbing!! Of course the real challenge comes when I have to write my own lesson plans. I’ll be there soon enough.

On the way home I suggested popcorn for snack (a favorite in our house) and Lex said, “Yeah! We can eat popcorn together and we can tell you about our day and you can tell us about your day.” Wasn’t that sweet. Of course once he got food and a book at the table he lost all interest in talking. Oh well. He ate three regular bowls of popcorn, a bowl of sugar snap peas, a tiny bowl of ice cream, plus another half of that blue bowl full of popcorn! Then an hour later he put away a big bowl of oatmeal (the usual way with almond butter, honey, and raisins) with a big glass of milk and a cookie. Hungry boy!

snack

Lex was HUNGRY after school today!

Eve polished off her popcorn and ice cream, but didn’t have much else this evening. She caught a yucky cold on Friday and has been dealing with sniffles, low energy, scratchy voice, and loss of appetite ever since. She went to bed early tonight. I hope she can kick it soon. Of course, not without passing it to Lex who seems very sniffly tonight. Sigh.

Let’s see if we can pull this off again tomorrow! :)

School count-down

We went back-to-school shopping at Staples yesterday and now Lex is super excited to go back to school! He walked around all day today saying he wished he was back in school. This evening we counted the days on the calendar (17!) and he said, “Awww…. I wish it was tomorrow.” Silly boy.

excited

A very excited boy. He made a cover sheet for his take home folder and tucked all of his new supplies into his pencil box. He has two pair of scissors, one to share, and two glue sticks, “Just in case one runs out.” There’s something exciting about new office supplies!

As we cuddled in bed tonight I reminded him of his summer homework assignment, the one thing that has been a bit of a damper on his back-to-school excitement. We discussed the assignment, which is just to read a book and fill in some questions about the components of the story. Person, location, problem, etc. He’s already read the book (technically heard it on Audible) so we discussed each part. He said, “Oh, yeah, I did this in 2nd grade!” I think once he realized what the assignment was he got a lot more relaxed. His plan for tomorrow is to do the assignment and then read the book. I said he probably doesn’t have to bother reading it since he heard the audio book, but he reminded me the assignment specifically says to read it, not have it read to you. It’s a Beverly Clearly book, so I think he’ll be done with it by tomorrow evening. :)

Seventeen more days! Only ten more days until I’m back in a classroom full time! Eek!

School’s out for summer!

Yesterday was the last day of school. We made cookies for them to bring to school for classmates and teachers. The kids both liked the butterfly idea I came up with, but disagreed on the message, so I ended up making two versions. I guess that’s fair enough. I vetoed their initial idea of making two entirely different treats. They don’t help me in the kitchen much anymore, so I end up doing most of the work and doubling that wasn’t fun for me, so we settled on butterflies and separate messages.

Bye bye butterfly…

cookie messages

… catch ya in the fall!

We also went to the store last weekend and they both picked out gifts for their teachers. Two books for Eve’s teacher for her classroom next year, and Lex picked out a great puzzle to help his teacher set up her new pre-K classroom next year! Both sweet and thoughtful gifts. Both wrapped and decorated very thoughtfully as well!

present

Lex puts so much effort into his work. The drawings on the top are a bunch of things they did in 2nd grade.

I guess I didn’t get a picture of Eve’s present, but here is a picture of her playing bride instead. That’s what she was doing while Lex finished his present.

bride

They went to school, everyone had fun and enjoyed the treats, and I now have 1st grader and a 3rd grader! Eve’s first grade teacher will be the same one Lex had. She is a great teacher and we are happy. Eve is excited to be “following Lex in school.” Lex did not get the teacher I was hoping for, but sadly his best friend did. I’m sure the teacher he got will be fine (I hope she can handle him well when necessary) but I would have preferred the other teacher and he would have been happier with his buddy. Sigh. You can’t always get what you want, right?

To make up for the class assignment disappointment (and just because) I took Lex to the skate park after school yesterday. He has been super eager to go and I kept telling him that we’ll go during summer vacation. He said, “It’s summer vacation now!” So we packed up his bike, called a few friends, and headed to the skate park.

lex on bike

Lex had a great time going up and down the ramps on his bike.

big boys

I really liked how the big guys and little kids worked around each other. I don’t know what the guys were thinking, but they were very nice and polite with the kids. After awhile we took the younger kids to the playground side, but Lex stayed and kept riding and it seemed like they were all taking turns and working around each other very well.

eve on scooter

Eve still refuses to ride her bike, but she had fun with her friend’s little scooter.

Today is the first full day of vacation. It is overcast and 60°. The kids are thrilled to be home in PJs all day. The day, so far, has involved some experimenting with gravity, some scientific observations, some Dinosaur Train (while I took a shower), a game of Life, lunch, and quiet time. I do have to drag them out to the farm soon for our CSA pickup, but I may let them stay in their PJs for that trip. :)

This experiment didn’t work. A mini-Lego car with paper wings. Sadly the car just would not fly. :(

Happy Summer vacation!

The Eve Effect

Have I written here before about the effect Eve has on her friends and classmates? She has a magnetism that draws all to her and since they are in kindergarten and haven’t quite figured out sharing, turn taking, and social status, they all fight over her! Seriously. I’ve seen it with my own eyes. Children crying to sit next to Eve. Grabbing her arms, arguing over who gets to be near her. It’s weird. I witnessed it a few times in school and asked her teacher awhile back if this is normal behavior or if it only happens when I’m around. She said it happens pretty regularly. Eve says she doesn’t like it and we’ve talked about ways she can be firm and tell people to let go of her arm and walk away. But these are her friends and she wants to sit with them all so it leaves her in an odd situation. I don’t think it really bothers her much though, because she never tells me about it unprompted and when she does talk about it she does so with humor in her voice.

Her teacher told me a few days ago that a bunch of them were crying at lunch over who gets to sit by her (which is just kindergarten nonsense because her whole class practically fits at one table so it’s not like anyone is very far from her!) and the teachers ended up doing assigned seating at lunch for a few days! That was the consequence for the silly arguing. Eve didn’t mention it until I asked her though. When I asked who she was assigned to sit next to, it turns out it was none of the crying kids. She’s so sweet and everyone is her friend so she was perfectly happy sitting next to the kids she was assigned to sit by.

It will be interesting watching her grow up. One of the most amazing parts of parenting is just watching them become people. Watching how they grow: physically, emotionally, and socially. I’m lucky to have two such different, yet equally strong and confident kids to keep me company in life. :)
