Sweet 16

Happy birthday to this beautiful human being.

We had a pretty low-key day. I had to work, but the kids were home and Alan came down for the day. Lex and B’Lake had to leave at 3pm for a robotics event, so I came home at lunch time for the birthday celebration. I never got around to making a cake, but we have plenty of sweets around here these days and Alan brought her a birthday cupcake. She got a new laptop, an awesome hiking backpack, flowers, and more. She was pretty happy with the birthday presents. :)

The boys left at 3pm, I got home around 4pm, then Eve, Alan, and I spent the afternoon/evening watching silly TV and eating sushi. It was a good day.

MRI

I had my first ever MRI last night. Zero stars, would not recommend. It started with me taking the wrong way in the hospital and having to walk around the entire square, then down a long hallway, then around the corner, past where the carpeted area ends, then down another hallway and FINALLY to the MRI waiting room. My appt was at 6:50pm, so I’d already had a long day and my sciatica was killing me. The walk didn’t help. I got checked in and changed into the snazzy pjs they provided. Then I waited for 45 minutes. Fortunately I brought a book along with me, a book I really want to finish, so I didn’t entirely mind the wait. In hindsight it sure beat the procedure itself!

I was asked about and checked for metal so many times that I momentarily worried that I did have metal implants or something else I’d forgotten about. Fortunately they wanded me before walking into the actual MRI room. Then I had to lay on the bed and the pain intensified. She put a little pillow thing under my knees, but the sciatica I’m dealing with is painful and the pain is only relieved (briefly) when I can move my leg and bend the knee and hip joints frequently. The MRI lasted 45 minutes and I could not move. The pain came in waves and I found myself alternately breathing and/or crying through each wave. It was like never ending labor pains with no reward at the end. I was also in a tube, with my arms pinned at my side, overheating and sweating, and it was awful. The noise was loud, but that wasn’t so much the problem, mostly it was just intense noise (pounding, thumping, etc.) that intensified the rolling waves of sciatic pain. It was miserable. After I thought I’d been in there forever and thought the thing must be over soon, the lady came over the headphones and said that the first scan was done and there were just a few more, approximately 27 minutes to go. Based on the 45 minute estimate, that meant I’d only been in there for like 18 minutes. I cried and begged to move my legs. She paused things and let me move my legs, as long as I didn’t move my hips/butt at all. It helped a little.

When it was finally over and I was leaving, I had an eerie feeling walking down the long hallway in the hospital, normally bright and sunny with all the windows and light, now dim and entirely empty. I was walking slowly and with a limp and started feeling like I was in a zombie movie. Then I got to my car, in the deserted garage, I put the car in drive and got a notification that the front trunk was open. Weird. I got out to close it and had a movie moment where I swear someone was about to take me out in the garage. You know the common troupe where the person gets out of their car to fix/check a weird thing with their car, then gets killed by a stalker. That’s what I was feeling. I shut the frunk and got back into the car as fast as possible, locking the doors immediately. Of course I was totally safe, but it was a weird end to the whole hospital experience.

I was happy to finally get home and be done with the day. Two positives though, 1) the MRI bed was like a tunnel, so I was in there snug and tight, but if I rolled my eyes up I could see a bit of the ceiling above me. I think I would have felt a lot more claustrophobic if it had been fully enclosed. The other positive 2) is that hopefully (HOPEFULLY!!) they will have a plan of care for me when I chat with the doctor tomorrow morning. I’m hoping for a super easy, quick, magic pill that will take away the pain immediately, but I’ll settle for whatever they have to offer. I just really, really want to walk pain free again! Wish me luck.

High School Variety Show

We saw the very best ever high school variety show this evening. It had jokes and songs, some good and some terrible, and jazz band performances, and technical issues (so many!), and audience participation — it was fantastic! 

They were having a lot of issues with the music accompaniment for several of the acts, but the high schoolers were awesome at getting through it. The best was when our favorite amazing performer (not in our family) who is kind and funny and we’ve known since kindergarten. She’s short and sang a song called Short which totally dissed on short people. She played it up amazingly, especially half way through when her music stopped. She made a joke about her song being cut short, then proceeded to finish it without the music. She was funny and fantastic.

The flip side was another girl who was wearing lingerie, including garters, and sang a loud angsty song while practically making out with the mic and repeatedly flipping her hair in an awkward trying-to-be-sexy way. It was painful to watch.

The MC (master of ceremonies, and which apparently none of my teens knew what MC stood for) was also very funny.

The best part of the show, of course, was the jazz band, specifically the song that Lex arranged! He loves the video game Portal and the music in it. He took one of the songs and arranged it for his jazz band. At the Jazz Festival last month they learned that other local schools have singers accompanying the jazz band for many of the songs, so Lex thought it would be fun to do that in his song too. It was fantastic and the applause at the end made my heart full.

Enjoy!

Rotary Update

We spent the day today at a Rotary Exchange Student event. Each of the outbound students presented on their designated countries, we learned about insurance, the visa process, and more. Lots of nitty gritty. Eve wore her blazer (and jeans!) and did the most entertaining presentation. Not necessarily the best, but definitely the most in-depth and funny. She got lots of compliments afterwards. :)

I was hoping for more placement information, but they don’t actually have that info yet, so we continue to wait on that. In the meantime, lots of paperwork to do!

Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI)

Hey! I forgot to post the great news here! We had a snow day on Tuesday and Lex decided that would be the date to commit to his college of choice.

WPI has an excellent computer science program, which is his intended major, but they also have a great music program AND a close relationship with FIRST Robotics. Apparently Dean Kamen, founder of FIRST, attended WPI but dropped out in 1976 to work on his insulin pump invention.

My favorite drummer boy with his percussion buddies, accompanying the high school choir at last night’s concert.

I’m so happy that Lex wants to keep music in his life. He arranged a song (based on a popular video game) that the jazz band will perform at their next concert. He loves making music in Minecraft and recreating songs. He was writing his own song too, but I’m not sure where he stands on that. He really likes the combination of music and video games. WPI gives him plenty of opportunity for both of those, plus it’s near Boston, hosts FIRST competitions, and is a really nice campus with modern technology and amenities.

He got a really good financial aid package from him, but the balance is still staggering compared to what I paid for Syracuse University many years ago! I immediately have a better understanding of the student debt crisis! I think he will be able to manage it though, especially if he sticks with that computer science degree.

This has also been the next step for me in the letting go process. All of the emails go to him, so I’m gently reminding him to check his email and keep an eye out for important things like move in dates! I want to have ALL the information immediately, but now I’m (kind of) patiently waiting for information to come from them to him to me. Eeek!

A trip to the vet

Today I had to take Jasmine to the vet. She HATES her car carrier and wails like a baby (really!) the whole way there. In an effort to make her trip more comfortable, I bought one of those “cat bags” like you see in Instagram and Facebook ads. They say that cats are calmer and happier in them. So I figured I’d give it a try.

Jasmine exploded fur everywhere as we tried to get her into the bag, then promptly pulled her head in like a turtle. LOL. We had a good laugh.

She stayed in the bag, mad but quiet, while I sat on the couch holding her for a few minutes, but when we passed her around a few times so Eve and I could get our shoes on, then brought her out to the car, she found her voice again! Once in the car she also found her bladder and peed in the bag, which leaked right through onto Eve’s lap and my car seat! Eve put her on the floor, still in the bag, while she went to change. I went inside to get cleaning supplies and came back to find Jasmine with her two front paws out through the neck hole. I grabbed the old carrier and Eve and I managed to get her out of the bag and into the carrier, despite the fact that she was covered in pee! Ewww! We took her to the vet, listened to all the compliments (apparently she is very strong and muscular), held her down for a vaccination, paid a ridiculous amount of money for it all, then went home.

Jasmine promptly went to the end of the hall to clean herself off. Huxley was very interested, so she had to bat at him for awhile too. That’s probably why she’s so strong!

All is well in the end, but it was an eventful afternoon!
