Happy Halloween

Happy Halloween. It was a funny one this year. This may have been my least celebrated holiday yet! I even had to write it, then circle it, on the calendar so I didn’t forget. I thought it would be fun to bake treats for my 5th grade class, but that never happened. I spent my time planning lessons instead. :) Lex and Eve got excited this afternoon, but haven’t really mentioned it much before that. We decorated a bit, carved pumpkins, and picked costumes. They went easy on me this year. Eve saw a Princess Jasmine costume she liked and Lex wanted to be the Lego man again. Easy peasy. I bought Eve’s costume awhile ago, but we didn’t even get them out until this afternoon. Lex was dragging the Lego man out of storage about an hour before trick-or-treating. Like I said, pretty low-key this year. Also, it’s raining. At least it’s not freezing rain! We did the usual thing, Alan took them out while I stayed home. Alan wore his pumpkin shirt, I wore my witch hat, done!

Heading out into the rain.

coming home

Back home again. They lasted over an hour. I was surprised. They must have done some socializing along the way though because they only made it to two streets… which is really the perfect amount in my opinion.

candy

Candy, candy, candy! (Lex has a stash behind him as well.)

handing out

I think they like handing out candy as much as they like getting candy. :)

Bedtime was late, of course. While I was cuddling Eve tonight I asked if she wanted the candy fairy to come and swap her candy for a present. She said no way. I asked if the candy fairy should swap her candy for ten dollars. She said, “My candy is worth at least one hundred dollars!” Funny girl! I asked Lex the same questions later and he also declined, though he estimated his candy to be worth $30. I’ve seen the going price of candy and I think $10 is right on target, especially if you factor in post-holiday sales! :) Then Lex says, “How do you know so much about the candy fair?! Admit it, you just made her up, didn’t you?!?!” I was laughing so hard. So much for calming down at bedtime. Whee… candy!

Happy Halloween!

With a cough cough here and a cough cough there

Two weekends ago Eve came down with a cough. It wasn’t horrible, but it was bad enough that I went out and and bought cough medicine. She kindly shared the cough with me and Rosy. Then she shared with Lex. Lex decided to one up her and turned that cough into a lower respiratory tract infection with a side of impetigo. He missed school on Monday because he was coughing so badly it just didn’t seem right to send him to school. Instead Alan took him to the doctor for the diagnosis and meds. Then he missed Tuesday because apparently both of those things are very contagious. After being on meds for 24hrs we were clear to send him back to school today. He wasn’t thrilled to go, but once he got there he was very happy. That’s his usual opinion on things. He had a great day today, in part because he was heavily medicated. :) First thing in the morning I gave him the antibiotics, plus cough medicine, plus Tylenol. Apparently he was still coughing heavily so Alan gave him ibuprofen before dropping him off at school. The teacher reported minimal coughing. I encouraged Lex to take it easy during recess and PE, but he chose to be a boy and play hard instead.

This evening Lex is still coughing and Eve’s cough has begun again :( She has very runny nose and a cough. I’m hoping it doesn’t get any worse. I don’t want respiratory tract infections all around!

So, um, for those of you coming to visit this weekend… consider yourself warned! I’m trying to get everyone healthy asap, but I make no guarantees.

Weekend Update

We had a quiet weekend. Very quiet! I slept late both days (soooo tired!) and Alan got up with the kids, which means lots of screen time. Lex has a pretty serious cough (that I’m going to do some Googling on after this post) and is wiped out from it. He also has a runny nose and fever to go along with it. Saturday afternoon I made lunch and neither of the kids would come to the table. Lex said he was too tired to move and fell asleep on the couch. Eve decided she wanted a nap as well, so she went up to her bed and tucked in. I humored her and prepared the room for sleeping (curtains, fan, music), fully expecting to find her playing five minutes later. Instead, when I went up to check on her I found her fast asleep. She slept for about two hours and Lex slept for a full three hours! It’s probably been over four years since they both napped at the same time! Eve woke up just as Alan was about to watch a show, so she cuddled on the couch to watch TV with him and he fell asleep for a nap! Seriously, it was a quiet house! We had a movie night Saturday night then everyone went to bed at a reasonable time.

Sunday I slept in again and Alan played school with the kids. They had science (Nova episode), math (Khan Academy), and recess (kickball). Then I took over and we carved pumpkins. I’m not very Halloween-y this year (or any other year, really) but we’ve done a few little things in preparation. This afternoon was spent reading, working, and more screen time for everyone.

chart

Lex got his allowance this weekend and we paid up on a few IOUs. He was excited to update his savings chart.

We made a little banner for the mantle.

I forgot to take a picture of the finished product. You’ll just have to come visit and see it in person. :)

Lex got a little more challenging with his jack-o-lantern.

jol p3

It was still bright daylight outside, so we tried to find a dark corner to test them. :)

jol p4

It kind of worked. They looked great on the porch tonight.

Tomorrow starts another busy week, including teaching several lessons, observing other classrooms, swim lessons, and the candy-licous Halloween festivities.

Awesomeness

We have an awesome school. In case you weren’t aware, October is National Bully Awareness Month and our school is tackling that issue head on! Our school councelors have done an amazing job of exploring bullying prevention and the students, from pre-k up to 5th, are all familiar with the three signs of bullying and what to do about it. We have excellent examples of students standing up for one another in school, on the bus, and out of school. Ask any kid and they will tell you exactly what bullying is and how it can be stopped. Last year the 4th grade did a powerful song/dance about the “bully machine” and this year the councelors took it a step further and organized an entire day, Unity Day (inspired by Pacer’s National Bullying Prevention Center)

All week the students have been making signs and banners, pencil toppers, wrist bands, and more to prepare for the big day. The school got bright orange “Otters Don’t Bully” t-shirts and decked the halls in orange, the official color of bullying prevention.

The local news came to our 5th grade classroom on Monday to do a story on our Unity Day preparations. That was pretty of cool.

Last night the kids worked hard to decorate their bikes and scooters for the special themed Walk and Ride To School day. They do “walk and ride” every week, but today’s was extra special.

bike signs p2

Lex’s signs. He even had a written plan as to where to put each sign on his bike.

bike signs p3

We got the bike and scooter decorated last night, so they would be all set for this morning.

This morning we got dressed in our matching bright orange shirts. I didn’t buy Alan one. Not sure how well bright orange and “Otters Don’t Bully” would have gone over in the office. :) At school, however, we blended right in with the crowd!

shirts

We all wore matching bright orange shirts today. :)

I don’t have pictures from the day, unfortunately, but it was a ton of fun. We had record number of students, parents, and siblings on the bike path, sporting orange and carrying anti-bullying signs. I’m sure pictures will be posted soon on the school website. Several have been posted on the school’s Facebook page already. We had an assembly in the morning where they showed videos students had made, built a chain of bullying prevention messages, had a performance by the 4/5th grade chorus (with a special surprise from the teachers!) and even had a special guest, Charleigh Gere, a local middle school student who is making a stand. (Watch her amazing video here.)

Our Unity Day dance. Listen to the kids cheer when the second round of teachers comes in. Too funny!

Anyway, overall an amazing day. We have great school councelors and an awesome school community. So proud to be a part of it!!

CHaD Hero time again!

Today was another busy one. Again this year we joined team “We Love You Brady Bukowski” and ran/walked/hiked in the CHaD Hero Half Marathon and Ripcord 5K. This year they also added a 10K (6.2 miles) wooded hike. Rosy and I did that with the kids while Alan ran the half (13 miles!) again. The day was perfect, a beautiful day to be out and active.

warm up

We started with a bouncy house warm up. We also ended with a bouncy house cool down. The kids are thoroughly exercised today!

The course was a nice mix of road, trail, and hills. We started on the road for awhile, then the signs pointed us into the woods.

Leaving the road and heading into the woods!

Look at the muscles on these two!

hiking

It was a beautiful day for a hike.

I know the area in general, but we saw a lot of cool new things while walking off the beaten path.

bridge

We took a few tiny side trips.

monkey bars

Monkey bars in the woods?

ropes

A rope course. Lex wants to come back here sometime.

ski jump

Apparently the Dartmouth Ski Team practices here.

There worked out to be nice pause points at the one third mark and the two third mark, so we took two breaks along the way for drinks and snacks. We had a map with us too, but the course was very well marked so we used it to see how far along we were and to keep the kids entertained.

break

Quick break. Lex pulled out the map to show us the way.

For the final third we walked the same path the half marathon runners were running. We cheered them on and looked for runners we knew. It was a great way to reinvigorate everyone for the final stretch.

final

This is supposed to be a picture of the eight minute pacer in the yellow shirt with the clown wig. Imagine running 13 miles at exactly 8m/mile with a clown wig on. Crazy.

We got back about 20 minutes before Alan. Of course we also started about 40 minutes before him! His pace was a bit quicker than ours. :) We had just enough time to grab some food and settle in to watch the incoming runners, cheer them on, and wait for Alan.

alan

Here’s Alan coming in! Thirteen miles!

family

Our family of CHaD heros. :)

While Alan stretched and cooled down, Lex and Eve headed back to the bouncy house. They are going to sleep well tonight! I’m really impressed with how well they did. I came prepared with things to do and ways to keep them busy and steeled myself for six miles of complaining, but they didn’t complain at all! Once or twice they asked to sit down for a bit, but then they got right back up and carried on. They chatted and were very pleasant company the entire way. It was great!

After the run we went home and showered then went to the post-run party for awhile. It’s a school night and we’re all pretty tired, so Alan had a good hot meal (it was a pot-luck party so the options were plenty) and we hung out for a bit, then headed home.

On that note, Eve has been in the shower for about half an hour now. I should go move the bedtime process along. :) Like I said, we’re all pretty tired!

Pumpkin Festival

We went to the Keene Pumpkin Festival today. I’ve wanted to go for years, but it hasn’t worked out until now. The weather was perfect, the day was somewhat free, and we had Rosy in town! Every year they try to beat their own Guiness World Record for most jack-o-lanterns in one place. You’re supposed to bring a jack-o-lantern or carve one there, but we skipped that step. Too busy this week for pumpkin carving.

Lex had a birthday party to attend this afternoon, so we had limited time at the Pumpkin Festival, but we had fun walking around, exploring, eating junky fair food, watching the costume parade (we did not dress up), and riding the ferris wheel. Good times!

pumpkin p1

There were a lot of pumpkins to look at!

parade

We watched the costume parade. Check out this guy playing the trombone with a pumpkin on his head!

lunch

Lunch on the curb. Pizza, popcorn, and french fries count as a healthy lunch, right?

pumpkins p2

Wall ‘o pumpkins! We noticed later that these pumpkins have rows of Christmas lights running behind them, with one light in each pumpkin, instead of the little candles like the other pumpkins all have. I guess it would be tough to climb up there an light all those jack-o-lanterns!

sugar

Eating ice cream and drooling over candy. Gives me a bellyache just thinking about it! :)

Pumpkins, pumpkins, everywhere!

jol ears

I love the ears on this jack-o-lantern!

jol hair

This one has glow sticks for hair! Cool idea.

Look how happy Lex looks. He loves it when Eve hugs him.

We waited for an hour to ride the Ferris Wheel and finally it was our turn!

A view from up high (though not the highest).

Eve and Rosy rode the car in front of me and Lex. Alan waited patiently on the ground.

tired girls

It was a long drive there and a long, tired drive home.

We wanted to stay longer and check out the pumpkin bowling, but after the ridiculous Ferris Wheel line (patience is not my speciality!) we were out of time and had to head home to get Lex to his birthday party. I’m glad we did too, because the birthday party was a ton of fun! Lex wanted me to stay (twist my arm!) so I hung out while the kids played games, bobbed for apples, had cupcakes, opened presents, and played Quidditch!

(These pics are from my phone. I swear neither camera did very well today. :/)

This kids rode on “broomsticks” and had to throw a big ball through the hoops. One kid was the snitch and they had a ball tucked into the toe of a yellow sock, then tucked into the waist of their pants. The snitch ran around while two seekers (one from each team) tried to get the sock, meanwhile the rest of the kids tried to get the big ball into the hoops for points. It was a lot of fun, especially to watch!

Another big day tomorrow with the CHaD run/hike and a post-run party. Feeling popular this weekend. We’ll have to rectify that (and get caught up on all my school work!) next weekend. :)

Praxis fun

In order to be a teacher in this great state I need to take (and pass!) the Praxis I and the Praxis II. Last spring I took the Praxis I as a requirement for admittance into UVEI. That went well enough and I passed it easily. Not too stressful… or maybe enough time has passed that I forgot the details. :)

I was planning to take the Praxis II next spring. My understanding of the test was that it was all about teaching and learning methodologies, learner development, classroom management, etc. That’s what the Kindle study guide I have led me to believe. Last month, however, after talking to a few people in my UVEI class, I got a little panicked. They said it was just more in-depth into the subject areas (reading, writing, and arithmetic), and it’s only offered every few months, and it’s four parts and challenging, and you don’t want to be job hunting before you take the exam, and and and… I panicked. In as much as I ever panic. :) So I signed up then went on a surprisingly difficult quest to find a study guide. All said and done, I ended up with about two and a half weeks to study. The book started by suggesting an eight week study plan. Ha! I could never study for anything for eight weeks!

So I crammed. I took the practice test in my book and did awful. I was hoping that would focus my area of study, but instead it just showed I needed to study everything! My dear family was wonderful and supportive as I read about ancient empires at breakfast, studied chemistry late into the night, and sent them all skating so I could relearn my American history. A classmate at UVEI yesterday told me about an online practice test site (that for some reason never came up in my Google searches!) so I took a practice test last night and did only marginally better. The site recommended I study more. :)

The big day came today and I was feeling overwhelmingly under-prepared. The test I took is actually a combined test, including a math test, a reading/language test, a science test, and a social studies test. Each test gets scored independently and each state has their own passing test score. I found the Vermont minimum scores and hoped for the best. A few deep breaths, a little mental psyching, and I began. Sadly I was stumped on the very first question and I felt like I stayed that way for most of the test. I even ran out of time on the math test and had to guess at the last few answers, with the final countdown clock flashing in my face. Ugh!

At the end, after you’ve completed all four tests, they show your scores on the screen. I took a deep breath and clicked the “Show scores” button, hoping for a least the 165 bare minimum I needed to pass. I was floored when I saw my scores! The first was 195!! All were over the minimum, with the closest being the math test I rushed through at the end.

scores

Passing scores in red, my scores in pencil.

I left the testing center thinking they must have changed the test and/or scores and not updated their website. There must be a problem. Maybe the computer was wrong. I don’t know. I felt like I did so awful, but the scores were so high!

Now I’m (not so) patiently waiting for the official test results to be posted. For some ridiculous reason they say it takes 12 days to post the scores online. The same scores they just showed me on the computer the minute I finished the test. Maybe there’s a good reason for the delay, I don’t know. The official scores will show the available score range, the average score range, and exactly what my scores are. Once I see that, I think I’ll believe it a little more. Boy will I cry if they changed the score ranges and my scores aren’t really that high!

The kids knew all about the test and that today was the big day. They gave me huge hugs and wished me luck when I left this morning. “Not just luck,” Lex said, “but the BEST of luck!” They took the bus home this afternoon, since I wasn’t at school, and when they got off the first thing they asked was how the test went. I told them I passed and they jumped around and yelled and celebrated with me. “That’s one step closer to being a teacher!” they said. I love when they count the steps for me. :)

Today marked the culmination of a few very hectic weeks at school and UVEI. Tomorrow I’m subbing, which is great classroom management experience without the stress of lesson planning, and Friday we have a district in-service day. That should be interesting. Certainly less stressful than today!

Fall fun

Friday was a beautiful day! We had a few friends come over after school and we all had snack then spent the afternoon building a leaf man, running around, riding bikes, swinging, playing hide-and-seek, and having a generally wonderful fall day.

pumpkin head

Meet our new friend, Pumpkin Head.

silly kids

We had a very silly afternoon.

more stuffing

We need more leaves! The girls continued stuffing long after the boys had moved on.

Then they spent some time pretending to walk past the house to see how it looked. They varied their walking styles and speeds, in case that made a difference in the appearance of the leaf man. :)

These beautiful fall days are limited, so we’re trying to enjoy them all!

A quick hello

I’m at Panera Bread right now, while everyone else is at my house having fun. I have two UVEI assignments to write, lessons to plan, and a huge test to study for. Ugh! I’m ready for this week (that has not yet begun) to be over! Soo… time for a blog post. :)

Lots going on. We had a busy week. Things are going well at school. On Thursday I taught a science lesson where we dissolved a sea shell in vinegar. The students were amazed. We had picture day on Friday and I got to be in the class picture. And I got my own “teacher” picture taken! I hope it came out well. I wonder if I’ll get a copy. I didn’t order a package for myself, just the kids.

We had some fall fun one afternoon with a bunch of friends over. We built a leaf man and rode bikes and all that jazz. Pictures on the computer at home. I’ll post them someday.

Hmm… I felt like I had more to say, but now my mind is blank. Actually, my mind is on a UVEI writing piece. I guess I’ll do that now.

Love to you all! Next week will be calmer. See ya then! :)

One Wise Owl

Lex came home with an award today.  He’s a Wise Owl.

He is a wise owl!

One wise owl!

Isn’t that cool?! He gets to keep the owl and the box (he’s holding the lid to the box in the picture above) for one month, then he has to bring it to school for the next Wise Owl. He gets to keep the certificate of course forever. He said he’s the first Wise Owl this year. He was pretty proud. :)

game

Lex made a puzzle for us this weekend. He made little check boxes at the bottom to make sure we all did it. :) I like this kind of mental challenge… although this one wasn’t too challenging! :)

This Wise Owl made a puzzle game for us to complete this weekend. I always liked this type of puzzle in the game books I used to get as a kid. He is so clever and creative. :)
