Thank you notes

It has been far too long, I know, but we are still working on Lex’s thank you notes. I’m a mean mommy and I make him do his own :) The other day I told him that he doesn’t have to make them fancy, he just has to get them done. He said, “But I want them to be nice. I want people to like them and be happy.” So the process continues. He worked from 3:30-5pm this afternoon and got two done.

I love this face, but really he was yelling at me for taking a picture before he was done writing :)

Now that he's smiling for the camera he likes to practice his smile and then look at the picture on the camera :)

For those of you waiting for a thank you note, your patience is appreciated and will be rewarded with some beautiful artwork.

Flower Rose Pie

Today we made Flower Rose Pie, per Eve’s instructions. She has been talking about it a lot lately and several times over the past few days we’ve pretend made it, but this morning she said she wanted to make it and pulled her chair over to the counter. I figured, “why not?!” and followed her lead. She told me what to put in and I gave subtle guidance. Here’s the recipe:

1 purple flower
2 scoops of flour (1c.)
2 eggs
1 scoop of brown sugar (1/2c.)
2 big spoons of vanilla extract (2T)
a dusting of baking powder
chocolate shavings and chips for the top

Mix everything together in the bowl, pour into a pan (she was disappointed that we couldn’t find the “pumpkin pan” but I have no idea what she’s talking about so we used a little stoneware dish instead), bake at 350° for about 23 minutes. She insisted it only needed 8 minutes, but when we checked it then she agreed it needed a bit more time :)

Quick sandwich break.

flower in flour

You have to dip the flower in the egg a few times, then lay it down and coat it with flour. She was quite precise about that step.

pouring

Scrap the batter into a pan. This lasted long enough for me to get a picture then she decided it was too hard and went back to her sandwich.

licking

Licking the paddle, another important step.

waiting

The hardest part... waiting.

When it came out of the oven we shaved up some chocolate chips across the top. Eve then made a “cross face” with full chips, but decided to “smooth it out” with the back of the measuring cup, so it mostly just looks like a chocolate mess.

Then Eve went to work decorating the top with chocolate chips.

messy top

It looks messy, but yummy.

proud baker

Look at that proud baker!

We ate it for snack and it actually tastes ok. Dense and mildly sweet, a little heavy on the vanilla, but overall not too bad. We all went back for seconds.

The finished product.

I thought I was being such a fun mommy, but when Alan came home he chastised me (gently) for baking with an unknown flower. Apparently he considers that to be an unnecessary risk in life. Oh well. If we all end up sick tonight at least we’ll know why! :)

A quiet Saturday

This morning I asked the kids what we should do with our day and Lex immediately said, “We should stay home and get caught up on our rest!” With the cold and the rain outside, I was fine with that plan. It was a weird, nice, quiet day. The rain was falling, the sky gray, the day chilly. One of those days where 6am looks remarkably like 11:30am. The kids played really well together. I got a lot done (mostly in the kitchen!) and the day just flowed. Around 11:45 I realized it was lunch time. Like I said, looking out the window it still looked early. The sun never broke through.

We read the paper, made some music, and just hung out.

The mail came early and I was nominated to go get it. Lex already took his turn in the rain to get the morning paper and Eve isn’t tall enough to get the mail, especially in the rain. The mail consisted of a bit of junk mail plus three magazines! The kids both know that “it’s a good day when there’s a magazine in the mail.” Today was an extra good day because Lex got his first issue of SI Kids and he was thrilled! Eve got Highlights and I got Oprah. They both plopped down and read their magazines and, in hindsight, I totally should have joined them. But alas, I kept going with my busywork.

Lex loves his magazine

Lex loves his magazine

The kids were playing so nicely together I contemplated skipping quiet time, but they got a little fussy towards the end of lunch so we stuck to the routine. Eve up in her room with an audio book and Lex in the office with blocks and his new magazines. When I let Eve listen to an audio book it’s almost impossible to get her down again before the book is over, so she spent 2h21m upstairs this afternoon listening to Beezus and Ramona, a book I don’t normally let her listen too :) Lex got done with his quiet time and decided to make a tic-tac-toe board out of blocks. Then made pieces. Then found a cardboard box and decorated it (very thoroughly!) and used it to store the game in. He gave me a “tour” of the box and I’m going to try and get him to do it again on camera. It’s so cute.

After quiet time I set the kids up to paint a birdhouse Lex got for his birthday. It was actually a kit and they built it last week with a babysitter and Eve has been asking every day if she can paint it. Today seemed like a good day.

painting

Notice how Eve puts on a smock (two layers) while Lex takes off his shirt (zero layers). That's just how they prefer to paint.

Just as we were cleaning up our painting mess I got a call from a friend asking if we wanted to join her at Panera Bread for dinner. I guess the kids were rested enough because they both jumped at the idea! :) We went out in the rain, had dinner, and headed home.

Baths, story (I am the WORST story reader at night, I constantly drift off while reading, the kids are so sweet and patient with me), and bed. Lovely bed. I should have crawled in bed too, but instead I came down to finish cleaning the kitchen and do this blog post (and waste time online, of course). But now, off to bed!

The only downside to the day is that poor Alan had to head south again for work and family. He has been a busy guy lately. Hopefully he’ll get some down time soon. We were happy he joined us at the ice cream social last night. Half of Lex’s class was happy too. He played tag with them for a looong time and they all loved it! Lex kept calling, “I love you dad!” as he ran by :) It was sweet.

They’ll sleep well tonight!

We’ve had a super busy week (few weeks, really!) and today we capped it off with a super busy Friday. Lex had school, of course, and Eve and I spent the morning running errands. I had a physical, complete with a tetanus shot. Eve was amazed that mommies get immunizations too (I guess she forgot about the flu shots). She held my hands and told me everything would be ok. Then happily collected a sticker from the desk for her hard work :) Then we ran some errands and made it home for a late lunch and nap. I insisted on a nap today and she just put up a token fuss. After a nice long nap, during which I was in the kitchen cleaning, prepping, preparing, baking, etc., we got Lex off the bus, had a quick snack then headed out for more errands. This time we had to go to Best Buy to get our fancy new Bluetooth device fixed. It had a loose connection making it such that using the Bluetooth was excellent, but using our radio or CD player was almost impossible. Anyway, we dropped off the car and then walked to the playground. It was a little scary (for me) walking along the busy road, but the kids did great.

Look at that face!

Lex's sandy feet

When the car was done we dusted off the sandy feet and walked back. The kids buckled themselves into the car then proceeded to toss things at each other while I talked to the tech guy. Moments later Lex was in tears with blood running down his face. Apparently Eve had hit him with her hat and split his lip. I cleaned him up as best I could, climbed in the car, turned it on and got a big, bright PROBLEM light on the dash. Ugh. The tech had no clue so I dug through the manual until I found the icon. Can you guess what the solution was? “Immediately take the car to the deal for service.” Double ugh! I called Alan and the tech did some stuff and turned the car back on. Guess what? No light. He said he didn’t do anything, but whatever, the light went away and we went home.

Home for about five minutes to make PB&J for dinner and then back out to an Ice Cream Social at Lex’s school. It was FUN! The kids ran and Alan ran and I took pictures ;) A lot of Lex’s classmates were there and they had tons of activities. And ice cream, of course.

I was about to put the backpack away and I heard Lex say "Mom should take a picture of us." I JUMPED at that suggestion! :)

Home at 8pm for baths, showers, and bed. They’ll sleep well tonight! We all will (if I can ever get myself to bed!)

Rest in peace Grammy Lynn

As most of you know, Alan’s mom died last Saturday (6/4/11). She had been dealing with diabetes for much of her life and a few years back was diagnosed with kidney failure. About 18 months ago she started dialysis treatments. Two weeks ago she had a heart attack (or a Takotsubo cardiomyopathy to be precise) and last weekend she suffered a stroke, which proved to be fatal.

We were not there when she died, but we were able to drive down quickly and be with Don and Amanda. It was an emotional day, of course, and I am not much of an emotional writer so this will be brief. She was loved and will be missed. I’m glad my kids got a chance to know her, and her them, and we can now only try to keep her memory alive in us all.

In no particular order…

The kids knew that Grammy Lynn was sick and had been in the hospital recently, so Eve decided to draw her a picture to take down with us on Saturday (we were planning on going down anyway, before she died). Friday afternoon she drew a picture of her and Grammy Lynn hugging. While drawing it she asked me if Grammy Lynn needed wings. I said “No, why?”, and she said, “Oh, maybe her arms are her wings.”

There will be a memorial service for her on June 19 from 3-5pm. All are invited to stay afterward and visit and celebrate her life. Please RSVP to Amanda for full details.

She will be buried at Arlington National Cemetery in a private service.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to St Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital in memory of her. Lynn was one of the original supporters of Danny Thomas’ dream (the children and youth who helped raise money were nicknamed Danny’s Kids), and she donated something every month of her life in support of their efforts.

Rest in peace Grammy Lynn. I know you are more comfortable now. You are loved and will be missed.

This is Alan and my first real experience with death, as grownups anyway, and the aftermath is quite involved. Please dear family, please be sure to have your estate paperwork in order. If not for yourself then for your loved ones who will have to deal with it while grieving. You all are loved and someday will be missed!

Sports

Lex has taken a sudden interest in sports, which amuses me. I suspect it’s because of the other kids in school. We had an argument over a World Series t-shirt Mandy gave him many years ago (Mandy, it finally fits him!) His friend told him it was a “basketball shirt” and I told him those teams and the World Series are baseball. He finally decided to agree with me.

This weekend he told Grampy Don that “The Red Sox are my favorite baseball team!” Grampy Don was thrilled and I had to suppress giggles because I’m sure Lex is just repeating what classmates have said. This morning he made the statement again, adding “Yes, and the Boston Bruins are my favorite hockey team!” I didn’t suppress the giggle this time. Instead I asked him why and he said, “They just are.” I don’t think he would recognize a Bruins player if he hit him over the head… no, I take that back, he would read the jersey and know exactly who was hitting him! :)

I guess it’s time to start watching some sports around here. Or, better yet, playing some sports! Mom, he is excited to start getting his Sports Illustrated Kids subscription. Thanks!

A visit to Pre-K

After school today we took a trip to Eve’s future Pre-K to drop off her enrollment paperwork. I was going to just mail it, but a few days ago she said she didn’t remember the school or the teacher, despite the fact that we went there darn near every day for a year bringing Lex to Pre-K. She insisted she had no recollection. I told her we could drive the paperwork over and when Lex heard that he said he wanted to come too! So this afternoon I picked Lex up from school and we took a field trip to the other school :) The timing worked out perfectly and we got there just as afternoon Pre-K was ending. His teacher saw us walk in and she got so excited! She gave him a big hug and asked us to come to the classroom for a visit. Of course! Eve didn’t seem to recognize her or know where the classroom was, so perhaps she really didn’t remember. Lex knew exactly what was going on though. It was so nice to chat with her and she was so happy to see both of the kids!

When he was in school last year they planted bean plants in the spring and brought them home towards the end of the year. We planted his in the garden and it grew a few beans. I took a picture (below) of him eating one of the beans and emailed it to her. In her classroom today we saw the picture hanging on her bulletin board. She said she printed and laminated it because she loved it so much. She has it hanging by her desk and used it to show this year’s class what they were planting. It was such a lovely visit! I love when people are that excited to see my kids! :) We also bumped into another parent of one of Lex’s old classmates. Her son will be in afternoon Pre-K with Eve. I’m sure Eve doesn’t remember him, but they played together last year at pick-up time each day.

Lex, July 2010

I left with such a feeling of happiness inside! The good feelings continued as we went to the shoe store and both kids behaved super well. The salesman (the owner actually at our awesome local shoe store) asked what kind of shoes they wanted, measured their feet, and got them shoes. They both loved the first ones he picked out. Then he picked out running shoes for me, which I also loved. I felt a little odd not caring about the prices, but turns out the prices were decent and I was willing to pay about anything for the wonderful, smooth process! (Thanks for the gift certificate at Christmas, Grandma!)

shoes

I meant to take a picture of us all wearing our new shoes, but I forgot until after I took mine off. Then I was too lazy to put them back on. It would have made for a better picture though. Oh well.

Then we stopped at a barber shop, on a whim, but when it was Lex’s turn he got scared and wouldn’t sit in the chair, so we left. He’ll be shaggy haired and sweaty headed for a bit longer. Then we went to the playground for a little while, then home for a lovely (pick-your-own) dinner and a smooth bedtime.

Overall a busy, but very nice day on the home-front!

A hike

I was lucky enough to get to go on a hike with the entire kindergarten class today. It took some coordination with a friend because Eve (and all other siblings) were not invited. My friend’s son is in Lex’s class and her daughter is Eve’s age so we shared a babysitter. This week at her house and next week, when the K class has another activity, we have a shared babysitter at my house. It works out really well!

The hike was fun. Each adult got a few students to be in charge of and we walked up the mountain and back down. The whole thing was maybe 40 minutes, not too bad, and the kids had a great time.

Crossword coins

I left the kids with a babysitter this afternoon and came home to find they had emptied out their “piggy banks” to play with the coins. Lex decided to make this…

crossword coins

Can you find all the names? There are five.

While we’re speaking of Lex and his genius, I mentioned earlier that he is finally willing to talk on the phone, right? At bedtime tonight we called Alan (who is at his dad’s house… more on that when I’m emotionally ready to write that post) and both kids happily chatted for a few minutes. When we hung up Lex said, “Phones really are amazing things. You can talk to people more than a mile away!” Then he asked how they worked and I did my best to explain. :)
