Parting gifts

I have been debating for awhile about end-of-year gifts for Lex’s teacher and para… educator? I don’t even know if end-of-year gifts are necessary or expected. So much to know with this school thing. Anyway, I had a few fun ideas that didn’t pan out, but when we made strawberry jam the other day it seemed like an obvious gift. Especially since Lex so eagerly helped with the strawberry crushing. Today he picked out fabric and ribbon and drew pictures on cards for his teachers. He also picked out two books he wants to put in the classroom for next year’s preschoolers. He is so sweet! I hope they like their gifts. Tomorrow is his last day!

Basic assumptions

We went grocery shopping Sunday morning and on the way we passed two police cars at a gas station. There were also two police officers hand cuffing a person on the ground. I’m assuming it was a guy, but really all I saw was back fat and butt crack. Lovely, huh! I didn’t comment on the scene, just kept on driving. A minute later Lex said, “Mom, at the gas station I saw…” and proceeded to describe the whole scene. Then he asked me what the policemen were doing with the guy. I tried to explain that they were handcuffing him (and then explained what handcuffs are) because he did something bad and probably he was fighting with the policemen. He thought about that for a minute and then said, “Or maybe the guy fell down and hurt his hands and the policemen were trying to help him.” Umm… yep, that sounds good to me! Certainly better than drunk and disorderly conduct at 9am on Sunday morning. I love that his basic assumptions are so good, so pure. I wish that could last forever.

Adventurous boy

Lex says to me yesterday, “Mom, guess what?! I’m going to try a new shirt tomorrow. It’s just like my black shirt only it’s brown.” He’s such an adventurous boy! :) And sure enough, he put on the brown shirt and proudly told me that he now has four (!!!) shirts that he likes. Whew! We may make it through this summer after all! :)

Siblings

We had a very nice day today. The kids played together all day, super nicely, all alone. I did some organizing in the storage room and they “helped” for a few minutes, then came up with their own games. I did some cleaning upstairs while they played, then went downstairs and they kept playing. After awhile they came down and headed right into the office to start a new game. After lunch and naps (he napped today, for the first time in about two weeks!) they were right back in the office for more playing. They had some pretty complex games going on. When I eventually called them for dinner (after I snuck out for a 4+ mile run!) they said “Just a minute, we need to clean up!” Ha! They cleaned for awhile, then ate dinner, and cleaned for awhile more. Unfortunately they were sllloooooowww cleaners and it was a big mess. Check out Lex’s block cleaning strategy.

Blocks

Very, very organized block clean up.

Anyway, dinner, baths and bedtime went smoothly and then Lex read bedtime stories to Eve. He read her pages from The Encyclopedia of The Human Body. He was definitely more interested than she was! As I read her a final story I watched Lex making weird faces and sticking out his tongue. He was reading a page about facial muscles :) Rosy, I think he likes the book!

Cake!

Look what I found in storage today. I did some organizing in there. The funny thing is I started a wish list awhile back (so I had an answer when people ask about birthday and Christmas ideas) and last week I put “cake plate/stand” on the list. Today I removed it! This was a wedding gift and I apologize that I can’t remember who it was from. If it was you, let me know! The only problem is… it looks so sad and empty. I think it needs a cake!

Family run fiasco

Alan and I signed up for a 4 mile run next weekend. The other day I said to him, “How would you feel if I ran a road race on Father’s Day?” and he said “Great, if I can run it with you!” Sooo… we are running a road race next weekend, with the kids in the stroller. Alan had today off so we decided to do a trial run. Easier said than done. Funny enough (now) the running was the least of our trouble. Getting Lex into the stroller turned out to be quite the production. He used to love it, but apparently now insists the stroller isn’t comfortable for him. I actually believe him about that. It doesn’t look that comfortable and his legs are always falling over the edge and the two of them are always piled high with books, snacks, water, etc. It really doesn’t look comfortable. We did some serious negotiating (and only one short screaming match resulting in a trip to his room) and he eventually agreed to come along for the ride. He promised he would do it one more time next weekend and we agreed to never ask him to get in the stroller again. Eek! I hope we can all keep our promises!

Once we got there we did a little driving around and decided the actual course isn’t really safe for a double stroller when the traffic is flowing. They will have traffic control next weekend, so no worries then, but not safe tonight. The first half of the course is along a nice rail trail, so we ran that twice and a little extra parking lot running to total 4.1 miles. I took the stroller for the first half and Alan took it for the second half. Part way into Alan’s turn… the wheel fell off!! Crazy, huh?! Everyone was ok and Alan did some banging with rocks and stuff and got the wheel back on. He said he can fix it properly before the actual race.

My goal for this run is to make it to the end, running. I was thinking today, while running, that every race needs a last place finisher and I may just be that person for this race! It’s a hard job but someone’s gotta do it! :) Wish me luck!

Ready for summer

Tuesday is Lex’s last day of Pre-K. We are ready. He hasn’t been thrilled about going to school the past week or so and I think he’s just ready for a break. I know Eve and I are also ready to be done with the 2x day 20 minute commutes. At pick-up this morning it occurred to me that we wouldn’t just be leaving the school and the teacher behind, but also a whole group of new friends we had made. He and his classmates, but also me and the other parents, and Eve’s daily mini-playgroup with the younger siblings. That made me a little sad. I have lots of phone numbers, of course, so we’ll try to continue visits over the summer, but I did enjoy seeing these people almost daily for the past year. Lex wants to ride the school bus next year, which is something we are considering, but if he does I know I’ll miss getting to see the teacher and other parents every day. It was a great way to get to know people and we definitely made some friends.

Happy Birthday Kitty

Eve and I celebrated Kitty’s first birthday this morning. Twenty minutes later we celebrated Kitty’s second birthday. Eve set up the party, turned out the lights, carried the play cake in and we sang to kitty. Then she served the cake and we all pretend ate it. Yummy wooden cake with a sweet girl and a stuffed cat. Good times were had by all. :)

Look at that look she is giving Kitty. She's so sweet.

Candles

Kitty needed a little help blowing out the candles :)

Oh girls!

“When I get older I’m going to do gross things and you should say ‘oh girls!'” says Eve. She cracks me up. She said this because last week we were visiting a friend and when her son started eating play-doh she told Eve, “Sometimes boys do gross things and all we can do is say ‘oh boys!'”

I just added this to the Quotes page and noticed that my last four quotes are from Eve. Guess I need to start paying closer attention to Lex!

Strawberries!

Eve and I went strawberry picking this morning. We actually went yesterday morning and discovered the farm wasn’t doing PYO until today. So we bought a quart of strawberries to tide us over and went back again this morning. :) She did great. The field was very child friendly with wide rows and friendly staff. Eve ate while I picked. After awhile she said “Let’s switch sides. I’ll do the picking and you do the eating.” She makes me laugh.

Strawberry Eve

I didn't have my camera in the field, but here we are back at the car.

Guess what we did with all (well, most) of those strawberries?!? We made jam, of course! Yummy delicious strawberry jam. The kids helped with the washing and mashing and played in the kitchen and we all had fun. I love days like this.

Hiding Rosie

First things first, make sure the engines are comfortable in the kitchen. Can you find Rosie?

Floating strawberries

So pretty.

Crushed berries

This smelled so good I wanted to just eat it with a spoon, before adding sugar and boiling!
