The birthday party that wasn’t

Today was the day of Lex’s big birthday
party. He helped me with the invites and guest list and we were
expecting 20+ grownups and 15ish kids. Sounds like fun, right?
Or not!

After a fairly uneventful
morning we had a royal rumble at nap time! Possibly our worst
yet. My lucky family got to listen to the whole thing. After
some extreme frustration I said to him, “Do you know what I
feel like doing right now, Lex? I feel like canceling your
party! Calling your friends and telling them not to come. No
cake. No ice cream. No party!” Good threat, right? Lex says,
“yes mommy, please cancel my party.” What!?! I came down and
talked with Alan and it turns out Alan had made a similar
threat during one of his turns in the ring and Lex said the
same thing. Sooo… we canceled the party. I still have no
voice so poor Alan got to call all the guests. Lex continued to
have a rough time, but eventually fell asleep.

Balloons. This is all he wanted for his birthday.
He’s been asking for weeks if he can have balloons for his
birthday. We went to the party store yesterday and he picked
out six balloons and my parents picked them up today. When they
brought them in, he was thrilled. We should have stopped there
and called it a party.

We all crashed onto
the couch for some TV downtime and hoped that no un-RSVPed
guests arrived. We also wondered if Lex would still be in favor
of the canceled party when he woke up.

After a good nap he woke up and I went to get him. Not
only was he still in favor of the canceled party, but he also
asked me to send everyone else home too :) He said “Mommy, I
just want to watch TV on the couch with you. I don’t want
anyone else to be here.” That didn’t happen, but he eventually
warmed up and we had a nice, relaxing afternoon. Some playing
outside, some swinging, pizza for dinner, bike riding, and off
to bed.

This is awesome!

There is a lesson here that I
should have learned last year and hopefully learned this year.
Lex does not like birthday parties. He does not want 35+ people
celebrating his big milestones. So next year when I start
planning his party, somebody, EVERYBODY remind me of this day.
Please! :)

Sadly we didn’t get to show off the crazy purchase
I made for his party. Personalized M&Ms.; We will have
fancy potty treats for many months to come!
