Toddler time

A few weeks ago Lex officially entered
toddler-hood. I say this because it was that day he learned the
fine art of throwing himself on the floor and kicking and
screaming. It was a fun few days :/ I think we did a good job
of handling it and it lasted for less than a week, though he
did have an impressive performance at playgroup one day.

Now he has moved on to the more defiant act of
throwing other things, instead of himself. He is being very
scientific about this whole process and is learning that it’s
ok to throw his bouncy balls around the house, but not ok to
throw his milk cup in anger. These extremes are easy. The
exhausting part is when he’s annoyed and throws something
unrelated. You can watch his little questioning face as he
picks up a boot, looks right at you, and throws it (never at a
person, so far, thankfully!) Of course he gets a “so sad” and
goes to his room for a few minutes. But then what if he throws
something (his truck, for example) when he’s not really angry?
Or throws something in his room after I’ve put him there for
throwing things. It’s like every day he thinks of new “what
ifs” to test out and I have to decide, on the spot, whether
it’s ok or not. Very tiring. I was getting a little lax about
putting him in his room (it’s not easy carrying a squirmy
toddler up stairs twelve times a day when you’re bursting in
the belly!) but I think that was part of the problem, so the
past few days I’ve been much more consistent and he’s
definitely catching on. It’s interesting to watch him
experiment on me. I know he’s just testing out his boundaries,
but I feel like I’m always just one step behind in making the
boundaries! It’s like he’s always running and I’m always
running right along side, trying to install the fence before he
gets too far, but always just one fence post ahead… never any
time to stop, think, plan, etc. Geesh! I’m going to take a nap
now!

He went down for a very early nap
today. Every time I put him in his room this morning (lots of
throwing) he grabbed his blanket and climbed in bed. Finally I
just closed the shade, turned on the fan, and left him there.
Silly boy. Testing the boundaries is probably just as
exhausting for him as it is for me. It would be nice to get
past this little game before new baby arrives though… nice,
but not likely :)

“On the launch pad, keep gas in the car”

Had my 39wk checkup this morning. All is
good. Baby is strong, active, and measuring right on schedule.
She also said I’m 2cm dilated and “very soft.” Which doesn’t
mean a thing, really, since I went from 0cm to baby within 24
hours with Lex and some women stay several cm dilated for
weeks. I know a woman who is due just before me and she’s been
5cm dilated for several weeks now. But, the dilation does
explain the funky feelings I’ve been having lately. I keep
getting flurries of activity in my belly. I’ll get a real
strong BH contraction, baby will start doing flips (probably in
protest of the contraction!) and then I’ll get weird pinchy
feelings in my cervix. Then things will settle down again for
awhile. Soo… I guess that means we’re making progress :)
C’mon baby!

PS. Mom, there was
a toy phone in the waiting room and Lex kept picking it up and
saying “Hi Mema…” then going into a long conversation that I
couldn’t understand a word of :) Probably telling you all about
the lovely hospital waiting room.

Three new movies

I posted a few more movies to YouTube (see down
the side of the page). In the first one Lex is reading Curious
George (not our favorite book, I think Alan actually “lost” it
today) and seems to think it’s written by Dr. Seuss. In the
next one he is talking to himself in the mirror for a second
(I’m always a little too slow with the camera) and then tosses
a ball down the hall. The third was from today (the other two
were earlier this week) and he’s trying to put on his new
boots. Doesn’t succeed, but he’s trying. At the end he comes
over to point out the gray camera and pull on the cap. These
are probably boring videos, but oh well. :)

Splash, splash, splash

We finally got Lex a pair of rain boots
and he loves them! We actually had one of Alan’s coworkers get
them for us because his son had a great pair and we couldn’t
find any at the stores we frequent. He lives about 45 minutes
away and I guess they got them at a local farm store. So he
grabbed us a pair too. The first time I let Lex wear them we
were outside for about an hour and a half and he splashed for
most of that time in a huge puddle in the neighbor’s driveway
(with all of the little neighborhood boys). When we came in he
was soaked from the waist down!! So much for the boots.

This morning it was rainy and chilly, but Lex
decided he absolutely had to go outside. I was on the phone and
he said “want go outside” and tried to put his shoes on. Then
he got frustrated because he can’t put his shoes on by himself,
ran over to the window for a minute, then came back and tried
to put his boots on :) Gave up on that and decided to go out
without footwear. Fortunately the door was locked (he can open
the door to the garage on his own now) and deadbolted (though
he can now reach the deadbolt, so it’s just a matter of days on
that…) When I got off the phone I gave in and we went outside
(I’m strong when he throws tantrums, but when he is clear,
decisive and articulate I usually give in easily :) ). We spent
20 minutes walking up and down the street (didn’t actually
leave our property line though!) splashing in the puddles and
checking out the storm drain. It’s amazing what entertains a
toddler. He had a blast. I wished I’d brought my camera
outside, but alas… maybe next time.

Childbirth Refresher

Alan and I went to a three hour childbirth
refresher class last night. A few important takeaways:

1) High, tight, belly pains and Braxton-Hicks
= false labor; lower back pain and low-belly cramps = real
labor. Good to remember.

2) When I’m in
labor and start forgetting what I’m doing (Mom, remember that?
You: “What are we doing in this room?” Me: *shrug* “No idea.”)
When I get to that point, it’s time to get to the hospital
ASAP!

3) Lex did great with our
babysitter (Jan) right up until she mentioned the “b” word
(bedtime) then he had a complete meltdown. She said they had a
great time playing, reading, etc. and then he cried really hard
for an hour as she tried to get him in bed. She’s good though
and got him to sleep in his bed.

So now
we are refreshed and continue to wait :)

Belly @ 38 weeks

Here are a few more belly pics. Can it get
any bigger?? These are good pics because you can see the
stretch marks and all. :) I have lots of Braxton Hicks
contractions lately and in the past few days the belly has
started getting very achy and sore too… maybe too many
Cadbury mini-eggs ;) And I got the same belly button pain that
I had with Lex, though not as strong (yet). I just went back to
the old blog and saw that the midwives called it a mild uterian
hernia. Yipee! Like my online whining? Like my maternity yoga
pants? They are so comfy I might just wear them for the rest of
this pregnancy.

Heat, tours, and a new baby

After three days of running a space heater
in our knee wall (and no house fires, yay!!) the plastic pipes
finally defrosted and the water started circulating again. Yay!
Tonight we will sleep in toasty comfort… and everyone in
their own bed. Yay! ;)

On an unrelated
note, I took Lex on a tour of the Birthing Pavilion (at the
hospital) today. We went with our friends Michelle and Dylan
(she is due in August, but hadn’t been to the BP before) and
happened to meet another woman (due next week) that I know from
playgroups. Her daughter is two and a half and totally into the
baby thing. She is excited about the baby, asking all sorts of
questions, and was really into the tour. Lex was totally
indifferent. They even showed us a brand new pink squirmy baby
and Lex looked at him then turned to me and asked for another
biscuit. We could have been touring a museum or construction
site and it would have made no difference to him. Actually, I
take that back, I suspect he would have been much more
interested at a construction site! Oh well. At least next time
we go (in labor) he’ll at least have seen the place.

And congrats to Jim & Julie. They became
Uncle Jim & Aunt Julie yesterday when his sister-in-law
delivered a little girl (on her due date!). I’m told all are
doing well.

Ready

I know it doesn’t matter one bit, but I’m
ready for baby now. I’m officially big enough, waddling enough,
tired enough, and sore enough for this pregnancy. And I
finished the baby laundry! This weekend we’ll put the car seat
in the car to let Lex adjust to having someone else back there
with him… though it will probably be Elmo or Jesse Bear for
the next few weeks. And then we wait, and wait, and wait some
more. C’mon baby!

Fun with crayons

Dylan came over to play this morning while his
mommy got her ultrasound. He and Lex played with the blocks and
watched tv and colored with crayons. Then they both went crazy
around lunchtime. Nothing like a few overtired toddlers! :)

I think this video is cute. Lex is
saying “Thank you” as he hands Dylan the crayons. They did this
7 or 8 times, but I only got the last two times on video. Oh
well.
