Happy Mother’s Day!
Happy Mother’s Day to me, and my momma, and all the other awesome mothers (and soon-to-be mothers!) out there!!
Today I got to sleep in and woke to the smell of french toast on the griddle. Yum! I came downstairs to a hot cup of tea, delicious breakfast, and a pile of cards from the kids. All week they’ve been scurrying up the stairs after school, squireling away some sweet note or another that they brought home. Today I got to read them all. Pure sweetness.

Then we hung out for awhile, read the comics, played some games, and read some stories. Alan got lunch from Panera Bread and installed a hitch and a bike rack on my car so we can now transport bikes places. Yay!
After lunch, Eve and I headed to King Arthur Flour for a baking class in their fancy new Baking Education Center. Double yay! It was a “baking with kids” class so the subject matter wasn’t new, but we had fun anyway. We made sugar cookies then decorated them with sugar frosting. :) Sugarlicious!

Cookies galore! We were a little heavy handed with the food coloring, so we have very bright cookies!
After class we had to do some shopping! Eve thinks we should start grinding our own flour for bread. I’m not sure I’m ready to go there just yet! I forgot to use my 15% off coupon though, so we’ll be shopping again soon. :)
Someone else was pretty happy with the cookies too!
When we got home Alan was mowing the lawn and Lex was lost in a book. I made soup and bread for dinner and we had a very nice family dinner, with cookies for dessert of course! Happiness is.

We went to a birthday party today and the kid had a zip line! Talk about crowd pleaser! Everyone loved it.
Lex took a few extra turns while everyone else had pizza. :-)
The Eve Effect
Have I written here before about the effect Eve has on her friends and classmates? She has a magnetism that draws all to her and since they are in kindergarten and haven’t quite figured out sharing, turn taking, and social status, they all fight over her! Seriously. I’ve seen it with my own eyes. Children crying to sit next to Eve. Grabbing her arms, arguing over who gets to be near her. It’s weird. I witnessed it a few times in school and asked her teacher awhile back if this is normal behavior or if it only happens when I’m around. She said it happens pretty regularly. Eve says she doesn’t like it and we’ve talked about ways she can be firm and tell people to let go of her arm and walk away. But these are her friends and she wants to sit with them all so it leaves her in an odd situation. I don’t think it really bothers her much though, because she never tells me about it unprompted and when she does talk about it she does so with humor in her voice.
Her teacher told me a few days ago that a bunch of them were crying at lunch over who gets to sit by her (which is just kindergarten nonsense because her whole class practically fits at one table so it’s not like anyone is very far from her!) and the teachers ended up doing assigned seating at lunch for a few days! That was the consequence for the silly arguing. Eve didn’t mention it until I asked her though. When I asked who she was assigned to sit next to, it turns out it was none of the crying kids. She’s so sweet and everyone is her friend so she was perfectly happy sitting next to the kids she was assigned to sit by.
It will be interesting watching her grow up. One of the most amazing parts of parenting is just watching them become people. Watching how they grow: physically, emotionally, and socially. I’m lucky to have two such different, yet equally strong and confident kids to keep me company in life. :)

Eve made a great while playing goalie at soccer practice this week. Everyone cheered for her. The bast part though, is that she takes no credit for it. As she tells the story, with great enthusiasm, “Nick kicked the ball right at my leg and it bounced off!!! Isn’t that so funny?!”.
The next day she drew a picture of the event at school.
Ice cream entrepreneurs
The kids went a little crazy with the card board boxes this weekend and one thing that came out of the chaos was an ice cream stand. They’re pretty excited about it. “We’re going to be rich!” they said. Sunday afternoon they had the box all decorated, the menu, the money box, and the plan. Missing just one thing… the ice cream! Silly kids. I told them I would buy some at the grocery store this morning.

After school they were a rockin’ team and got their stand all set up. By 3:10 they were out front awaiting the crowds. :) The crowds were slow to arrive, but eventually trickled in and they ended up with a handful of customers.

They are planning to be outside every afternoon this week. Lex even asked if I would buy more ice cream when they run out. He’s ambitious! (I think this is also, at least in part, a ploy to stock ice cream on a regular basis!)

I’ve been talking about painting the bathroom for awhile now. I guess now I am committed!
Or maybe I should be committed!!
As with any home improvement project, this is turning out to be bigger than it should be, especially since it’s just a little room!

After school on Friday we invited a few friends out for ice cream and playground fun! It was a beautiful day and a wonderful time!
As we were getting ready to leave I commented, out loud but mainly to myself, that I’d have to stop and get some cash to buy ice cream. A few minutes later Lex was at my side with $7 in his hand asking if that would be enough. He treated us to ice cream. Isn’t he sweet?!
