Santa

The kids were up late last night, chatting with each other. I had to settle them down a few times and when Alan went up he found Lex sitting on the floor next to Eve’s bed chatting. They were so sweet, but it was late!

This morning Lex comes downstairs and the first thing he says is, “I’ve decided I’m going to start my Christmas list today.” Apparently he and Eve were discussing Christmas and all the things they want. When she woke up she started her Christmas list as well.

It was sweet listening to them chat over breakfast. Lex was helping Eve with her spelling and they were discussing the reality of Santa. Lex said he doesn’t believe in Santa, “Well, sometimes I do!” he added quickly. I think the logic befuddles him (as it should) but he’s a little worried about NOT believing! :) Following his statement the conversation went something like this:

Eve: “I had a present from Santa last year.”
Lex: “Did it say From Santa?”
Eve: “No, it just said Santa on it.”
Lex: “It was probably just someone in our family who wrote Santa on it.”
Eve (laughing): “No! That is just too silly. No one is that silly!”
Lex: “Aunt Katie is pretty silly. Maybe she wrote Santa on the package.”

I love the childhood logic!!

Sports

Lex has recently expressed interest in sports. Hockey, in particular. Several of his classmates play on a team and they brought a trophy in for show and tell. Lex was duly impressed. He described the entire thing to me, every little detail, after school that day.

This week he brought home a hockey book from school and we’ve decided that we, as a family, will learn how to skate this winter. I may take him to a Dartmouth game or maybe take him to watch his classmates play.

It’s an interesting situation though. I think he’s at the age where he is naturally starting to develop an interest in this kind of thing. I know another mother with kids the same age who is facing the same situation. The problem is, so many of his classmates have been playing since they were four! Or even younger, in some sports! Soccer starts for 2yr olds around here. Seriously?! So when the child is seven and starting to develop their own ideas and interests, they are already too old. Geesh!

Lex says he really wants to play on the hockey team with his classmates, but that won’t happen any time soon. I told him we could learn about hockey (rules, etc.) and learn to skate, then we’ll take it from there. He’ll probably lose interest anyway.

Parenting is so interesting and ever evolving. You don’t want to (well, I don’t want to!) force them into over-scheduled lives just so they don’t miss out on things, but at the same time it’s sad when they express interest in something all of their over-scheduled friends are doing and they can’t do because they weren’t born on skates. One of Eve’s classmates, a tiny little 5yr old girl, will be joining a hockey team this fall. Her mom asked if Eve wanted to join too. I told her we’re working on learning to skate this year and I’ll get back to her next year. :)

Reading

Eve read to me last night! She reads with Alan and he insists she’s a good reader, but she never reads to me. Recently I found a big (195 pages!) Dick and Jane book that someone had given us years ago when Lex was young. It got very little use as his reading skills were already well beyond Dick and Jane. I pulled it off the shelf thinking maybe Eve would like it.

Last night she wanted me to read a really stupid Barbie book, so I agreed on the condition that she read a story to me next. Surprisingly, she agreed! I read Barbie: Pet Vet (gag!) and she read 30 pages of Dick and Jane, which is equally dull really, but exciting because she read it to me! :) She reads with great emotion and gusto as well. I was thrilled! She kept saying, “This is so easy!” and really, it was.

Yay Eve! Coincidentally I found out this morning that her teacher is doing reading testing today. Maybe I’ll ask for an update, just for my own curiosity.

The oven

Wouldn’t it be funny if this were some sort of cream puff explosion!? Funny for a minute anyway. Alas, it is just my attempt at cleaning the oven. Something bubbled over awhile ago and now I have to take down the smoke detector before turning on the oven and everything comes out with a slightly smoked flavor! True confession: I had to look up how to clean an oven on the Internet. I love Pinterest. Does that make me a lame housekeeper or modern woman? Both, I suspect.

One final thought – Is baking soda the only thing that comes with a drug facts panel AND a nutrition facts panel?!

Happy Fall

I took the kids to the apple orchard today. I’m a sucker for apple picking. I just wish those bags didn’t fill up so fast! This place has apple, blueberries, raspberries, a corn maze, and today they had fresh donuts, cider, and hay rides! It was busy, yet somehow peaceful as well. We had a really nice time. I packed a picnic lunch and we hung out for over two hours.

Lunch by the river. It was a very sunny day!

That bagel is as big as his head! He only ate about half of it though.

raspberries p1

After lunch we headed for the raspberry patch. Eve remembered from her field trip that the Kiwi Gold raspberries were very tasty and were a peachy color when ripe. She did a great job explaining things to Lex.

horses

We were all surprised to see, and hear, horse drawn wagon rides. I didn’t know this farm offered such a service. We missed the ride up to the apple trees (it’s a short walk anyway!) but caught a ride back down.

Eve was counting her raspberries, in a random chaotic sort of way, and insisted on counting each berry in my hand before letting me put them in her container.

Both containers were full and those berries were all gone by afternoon snack!

green lex

Where’s Lex? He blends right in on a sunny day.

I had to tell him, many times, to pick the apples one at a time, not gather a huge armful that resulted in dropped apples everywhere. He has his father’s efficiency gene.

I tell ya, the pickin’ was good!! :)

And an Eve in an apple tree.

Apple trees make me smile.

A nice lady took a picture for me in the wagon heading back down the hill.

pumpkins

I caved and let them buy pumpkins. I’ll have to buy more for carving, I think, but I’m a sucker for fall activities and happy kids!

eve and her pumpkin

The rule, as always, was they had to be able to carry their own pumpkins. When we got back to the car Lex said, “Whew! I can walk pretty fast with eight pounds of pumpkin in my arms!”

corn maze entrance

Lastly we did the corn maze. This year’s “theme” is a mystery. Vincent Van Goat has lost his ear and as you progress through the corn maze you can read clues and try to solve the mystery. My two had no interest in reading clues and we just ran through it, quite literally!

“That way!” she yells.

apple brownies

Of the huge grocery bag full of apples we brought home today, four of them went into making apple brownies. They look and smell delicious. I’m going to taste one this evening, and if they are good we’ll be sending them to school as little treats for their classmates.

I just went looking for a blog post about last year’s trip through the corn maze (we got lost!) and found this one instead, from 2008! I had completely forgotten about that first trip through the corn maze. They are so little! I love my blog.
