It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas!

We got our Christmas tree today. It’s BEAUTIFUL!!! Perfectly shaped, fits perfectly, smells delicious… ahhh!

So strong

Here is our Christmas tree, horizontal. "Whoa! Daddy is so strong," said Lex.

Isn't it beautiful?! :)

Eve

She wouldn't let me take a picture of the pretty ornaments she was holding, but I got her looking at the camera at least.

Eve checks out

Eve woke up this morning and told me she was sick. She didn't have any symptoms, but she stuck with the story. She definitely was quieter today than usual and didn't want to leave the house at all. When we got done decorating the tree she grabbed the DoodlePro and parked herself in the dress-up box for awhile. Birthday crown on and one pink glove. She cracks me up.

Message to the babysitter

Alan and I went out tonight and the kids behaved very well for the babysitter. Here is a little note that Lex wrote for her. The picture is of her standing next to a Christmas tree.

The tree

This makes me :)

The living room

I like the tree back in the corner so much more than by the closet door where we had it last year. It's perfect!!! Merry almost Christmas! (hmm... a noticeable hole seems to have appeared in the tree after we decorated it. I'll have to check for heavy ornaments.)

Today

We had a nice day today. Started with surprise candy in the advent boxes (gold coins) and then we played and exercised and played and napped and decorated and had a nice day. Here are a few pictures for you :)

the mayflower

Lex apparently learned about The Mayflower in school. Although he didn't learn quite enough because he told me today it was the ship that brought the Indians to England... good thing he still has a few more years of education to complete :)

He added a bit more detail.

me

I wanted a picture of Eve and I wearing Santa hats, but she refused (see more below) so Lex took a nice picture of just me :)

christmas lights

We went on a Christmas light walk tonight. The kids wanted to see our window lights from the outside, then we kept walking. This picture is my neighbor's house.

Eve seems to have developed a case of camera shyness lately. When she does sit for a picture it’s usually a pretty forced smile, but most of my pictures of her these days look like this:

Tomorrow we get the Christmas tree! I’m so excited! Have I mentioned that I love Christmas!??! :)

Holiday charity

I’m trying to instill some concept of charity in my kids. Never too young to start, right? Yesterday we baked cookies to donate to the Haven. Today we packed up a bag of food and the cookies. I have been talking with the kids about donating toys as well, but that isn’t going over so well. Last year they both happily (mostly) chose 2 and 4 toys (per their age) to donate to “the children with no toys.” When I mentioned this again this year it didn’t go over as well. Lex came around after a bit and started looking for toys, but Eve wanted nothing to do with it. I set only two rules: 1) the toy must be complete and in good condition and 2) both kids must agree. Lex did a good job finding toys, and Eve did a good job vetoing every single one. She insisted, in her very dramatic way, that she played with each and every one and couldn’t stand to be without. I explained it a few times, but she wasn’t interested. Lex snuck one toy in the food bag and away we went.

When we got to the Haven the kids eagerly brought the cookies in and Lex asked if he could have a tour of the place. I told him about the food pantry and the people who stay upstairs, he wanted to see it all. An employee gave us a nice tour of the food pantry and explained how it worked. She even opened all six of the refrigerators so he could look inside each one :) She showed us photos on the wall of the upstairs accommodations and Lex wanted to check them out as well, but I said no since they were closing soon and I think it would be awkward to go through people’s living quarters. So we checked out the food pantry and the clothing area and he really seemed interested. Eve was only moderately interested (but she is still young) and silently started crying when she noticed the toy in the food bag. She sobbed until I asked for it back. I guess we’ll keep working on the toy donation part. There’s still time for that. We were talking about making muffins in a few weeks and bringing them over. Maybe that trip will include a toy or two.

I have been thinking a lot about how to reconcile “Santa” with charity, gifts, thank yous, etc. I don’t want my kids thinking that Santa brings everything to everyone. When I first mentioned the toy donation idea last week both kids were confused as to why kids needed their toys instead of just getting new toys from Santa. The subject came up again a few days later with Eve when she asked me about a Toys For Tots sign. I posted on Facebook and got some great advice. Santa brings one toy (or just a few toys) per kid, but we are fortunate enough to have money and family who love us and give us even more presents. Not everyone is that fortunate. That seemed to resonate a bit with the kids today. I’ll keep at it. I’m hoping to avoid the mass consumerism of the holiday season.

Anyway, I feel like this is a super rambly post.. perhaps due to the vodka/oj concoction my dear hubby made for me a few minutes ago? :) I’ll write something more coherent another day.

One final thought, when we were out driving this afternoon Eve saw a Santa figure on a lawn and yelled, “SANTA!!” as she is apt to do these days. Lex replied with, “I don’t care if you believe me or not, Santa is real. Mom, do you believe?” I said, “Yes, I do. Do you?” And he said “Yes, I do.” :) Holiday magic.

From my Love & Logic newsletter:
During this Christmas season, my hope is that you’ll…

  • spend more time playing with your kids than you spend shopping for them;
  • remember that the gift they really yearn for is you;
  • hug them and smile into their eyes as often as possible;
  • and show them through your never-ending love what a precious gift they are.

December 1st

The kids were pretty excited about the advent calendar this morning. That made me happy. However, I got the biggest reaction from them when I said “yes, it’s ok to eat the candy this morning.” :) There was a small piece of chocolate for each of them. Eve automatically started unwrapping her piece, but Lex stopped her. Then he turned to me and with his sweetest voice asked if they could please eat their candy before breakfast. I agreed and his eyes grew wide as he uttered, “really?!” Haha… I like it when I get to be fun mommy!

Taking down the first one.

I love how nicely they worked together here. I hope that lasts all month.

Chocolate at 6am

Eve enjoying her chocolate at 6am. I was a tiny bit sad there wasn't a piece in there for me.

Counting

I turned off the flash so now they look like they're moving a lightening speed! They each counted the remaining ornaments to see how many days are left until Christmas.

While I made breakfast Lex decided to have a photo shoot with Eve. Amazingly, she cooperated for a few minutes. It was funny to listen to him posing her and demonstrating the poses he wanted her to do… just like the photographer at The Picture People did with us last week.

My Advent calendar

I am so excited I’m giddy! I have been working on this for a month and thinking about it for about five years! I was giggling when I hung it up tonight. Alan is pretty sure I am more excited than the kids will be… until they discover there is candy in those boxes!!

big picture

My beautiful advent calendar! It will look even better this weekend when we take out the rest of the Christmas decorations.

When Lex was a baby I started thinking about making an advent calendar. Something that is pretty, felt, and reusable from year to year. My original idea was overwhelming, even after thinking about the logistics for five years. This fall I started Googling for ideas to make my original plan easier, but then I came across a photo that led me to these. I LOVE these!!! Next year I might add some rick-rack or sparkles to the ornaments, but for this year they are perfect. The boxes have Lego pieces, miscellaneous tiny little things that Eve can love and cuddle, neat rocks, rings, and, of course, candy. Legos in each box that will result in a fun car at the end. The kids have seen me working on the felt ornaments, but they have no idea about the boxes. I’m SOOO excited!!! Welcome December!!

I'M SO EXCITED!

Just for fun, check out my advent calendars of past years: 2007 and 2009. I guess we didn’t do one in 2008. That was a rough month.
