She rides again!

With the confidence provided by knee pads, elbow pads, and protective gloves, Eve worked up the courage to ride her bike again! You may remember that she rode like the wind back when she was five, but for some reason she decided not to ride at all last summer, much to our dismay. All last summer she refused to ride her bike. I think she must have taken a tumble, but nothing too bad. Lex took a pretty bad one early last summer that may have scared her off. I don’t know. She rode her scooter all summer, but wouldn’t touch the bike. This spring she was hesitant but agreed to try again with knee and elbow pads. It took awhile, but we finally bought them and she was thrilled. Today she went out riding and it came right back to her… like riding a bike! After awhile she decided the pads were uncomfortable and she decided to brave it without them. She did fine, of course!

Happy girl with well protected knees and elbows. :)

Riding with Daddy

She still has a bit of work to do on stopping. Hopefully she figures that out quickly before tumbling and losing all confidence again!

Gardening

Eve and I planted a garden this morning in the backyard. This garden area is now on it’s third incarnation. It started as a veggie garden way back when, then turned into a dirt box for a few years where the kids played with their trucks and dug holes to China, and now it will (maybe) become a beautiful flower garden.

I’m teaching Eve the laziest gardening skills. Last weekend we pulled up as many weeks as we could and used the shovel and rake to level out the space (no more huge mountains and deep lava pits) and loosen up the dirt. Then a week went by and the weeds grew back. This morning we went out again, pulled up more weeds, and planted seeds. During the week Eve had drawn a few plans for the seed planting, based on the heights of the flowers and the angles of the sun, but when we went out this morning she ended up just sprinkling them in loose rows. We’re working with seed packets from last summer, so I don’t know if they’ll even grow! Once all seven types of flowers had been sprinkled about the garden we dumped a giant bag of potting soil (also from last summer) on top and use the rake to spread it all around, destroying any semblance of seed rows we had. Then we sprayed the whole thing with water from the hose. Easy peasy!

I told her we should make a journal and keep track of what we planted and when, but probably we’ll both be too lazy busy to make that really happen. Hopefully nature will cooperate with us and Eve will have her big, beautiful flower garden this summer. If not, maybe I’ll teach her the right way next summer. :)

Eve’s 7yr Checkup

Another year, another trip to the doctor’s office. Fortunately another easy-peasy trip for us. The biggest inconvenience was a cranky Lex. Eve was happy and healthy, of course. She’s now 57lbs (77th percentile) and 50″ (83rd percentile). Growing right up! I didn’t get a picture at the doctor’s office because doctor visits just aren’t that cute any more. Shhh, don’t tell.

I asked the doctor about the lump on her ear. I think I posted about it a few years ago, but I can’t find it for a link now so you’ll just have to trust me. :) The doctor said it doesn’t look dangerous at all. She said sometimes “growing and changing” bumps on children are just growing and changing because the child is doing the same. She said growing and changes things on grown-ups are more concerning. She agreed that a visit to a dermatologist would be prudent anyway though, even if just to put my mind at ease. She gave us a referral and maybe I’ll hear back from a specialist before 2015! Fortunately it’s no emergency.

She certainly has no trouble with her ego!

The one thing the doctor stressed, again, like she always does, is healthy eating. I always feel guilty when my kids list all of zero things in response to her question about healthy eating. She asks, “What vegetables do you like?” and they says “Umm….” Silence. She then asks if we’ve seen the MyPlate.gov thing and then proceeds to tell them about the importance of healthy foods. I say “Yes, I’ve said it all before. They know. They just chose not to.”

Tonight Eve chose to. Yay! I was having edamame for dinner and she asked to try some. She decided it was ok, not amazing, but not awful (rave review!) and then asked for some more. Eventually she asked me to take a picture to show daddy. :) Maybe it was proof that she once ate something green. I have a guilt complex about their diets (and my own too!) so it always makes me happy when they are willing to try something new! Yay Eve! Here’s to a new year of healthy eating! (or at least one meal)

Edamame is yummy!

Happy Birthday Eve!!

Birthday season is upon us again and suddenly baby Eve is a big seven year old!

IMG_1241-001

While most kids are chomping at the bit to be older, Eve carefully reminded us throughout her birthday weekend that she was not seven yet. Even this morning when we were having a little 6:00am celebration, she said, “Well, really I’m not seven yet!” Last night she tried to convince me that you don’t turn the new age until the very end of the day, overnight while you’re asleep the night after your birthday, I think maybe she liked being six. :)

We had a very fun, very busy weekend. On Saturday she had a bunch of friends over for a penguin party. The weather cooperated and we were able to get outside and play after cake. A good time was had by all.

buffet

We had a lovely spread. Penguin cake in the middle, veggies on one side, Goldfish and candy on the other, and blue Jello “water” in the middle. I bet you can guess where the kiddos spent most of their snacking time!

cake

This year, on a whim, I ordered a cake from an awesome lady. I’ve known her since high school and she now does cakes professionally. It turned out beautiful (and delicious)!

picture frames

The kids started the party by making penguin picture frames. Then I took pictures of each of them with Eve, printed them, and put them in the frames.

igloo frame

The boys finished the rolled-up-newspaper-igloo project that I started with the kids a few days ago and ran out of time to finish.

pictures

Aren’t they cute?

igloo

Here’s the completed igloo. We were going to put welcome signs on them (this one and the table one on the other side of the room) but we ran out of time for that too.

igools sign

Eve made a sign directing the children to the “igools” downstairs. :)

me and alan

My friend wanted to take a picture of me and Alan. She thought Eve shouldn’t be the only one celebrating today. :) (It’s not a very flattering angle, but I’ll post it anyway.)

Since all the kids were playing in the basement we brought the presents down to open there. I don’t have any great pics though, so you’ll just have to use your imagination. :)

cake

Everyone was VERY excited for cake!

cake laughing

This is me cracking up because Eve blew out the candles before we even finished the first word of the Happy Birthday song. I relit them quickly while we finished singing. :)

silly eve

We were all pretty silly by this point.

sawzall

Just for fun (and to terrify a room full of small children), Alan jumped in with the sawzall running on high when it was time to cut the cake. Grandpa Tom got a video of it that I’ll try to post. It was hysterical and a little scary.

cake top

One final picture of the awesome igloo cake before we dug in!

cake cut

It didn’t last long!

outside

After cake I sent them all outside!

eve sliding

Eve was really happy that the snow stuck around for her birthday this year. She really wanted to play penguins with her friends.

sliding

Penguins love to slide on their bellies!

group shot

Happy little birthday penguins!

After we said goodbye to all our friends the kids took to their corners for a wee bit of downtime. An hour later we packed up and headed to Grandpa’s for a pizza dinner and round two of cake!

more presents

Do they make non-reflective glasses? I might invest in those next time around!

more cake

Mema made a dinner birthday cake. It’s not often you get two cakes in one day!

stable

Eve got a stable and lots of animals to play with.

We got home late and went right to bed. Everyone was beat! Sunday was spent relaxing with family and trying to restore some sense of order to the house. I also spent Sunday baking and decorating cupcakes (more cake!) for school on Monday.

bday presents

For her actual birthday I left two small presents that were beautifully surrounded by flowers from others. She is a lucky little girl.

lex

Lex woke first and eagerly waited for the grand opening.

card

I think she likes her card. :)

book

I got her a Lego book. Basically a comic version of the Lego Movie. Everyone loves it.

shoes

I also got her some sparkly red shoes because how could I not?!

breakfast

Pancakes for breakfasts. Let’s keep the sugar-fest rolling!

cupcakes

One more round of cake. These cuties went to school today. They should each have a penguin on top, but I quickly discovered that the toothpicks don’t fit in the cupcake carrier, so I put a few in for pictures, then took them out and put them all into a baggie. Eve put the penguins on top at school before serving them. We also made a few mini cupcakes and brought them to karate this afternoon.

This afternoon we went to karate and then out to dinner at Panera Bread. Eve’s choice. No surprise there! :) I think she had a pretty awesome 7th birthday weekend. Now let the post-party lull and sugar detox begin!

Little House in the Big Woods

Eve was sick today (cough, low fever) and I took the day off to stay home with her. Alan was with them Monday and Tuesday while I was doing parent conferences. She started feeling bad on Tuesday and Alan said she kept going to the window and asking if mommy was coming home yet. He said it started around 10am and he promised her I’d be home around 3pm… then I got lucky she fell asleep because I didn’t make it home until 4:30pm! But I was home to wake her up at 5:00. Anyway, she wasn’t up for school today and I wasn’t up for leaving her (and Alan wasn’t up for a third day off from work) so I stayed home with her.

We have been reading really stupid fairy books that she loves and she promised me that when we finished the series she would let me pick the next book. Today I chose Little House in the Big Woods and she protested. She argued and refused. I was annoyed, but tried to be patient with her. This evening she basically put herself to bed and when I went up to read to her I found her in bed with the lights off. I asked if she wanted me to read a few pages of the book and she agreed, granted I let her lay down and if she got bored we could stop.

Turns out she loved it! Also turns out I either have not read this book or completely forgot the entire first chapter. The whole thing is about them preparing for winter, which means killing and slaughtering many animals, and it goes into great detail! They even describe in detail how to roast a pigs tail and how delectable it is. Yuck! I kept asking her is she wanted to stop and she said no. Either she liked the book a lot or she liked seeing my yucked out face! When we finished the first chapter she said we should read more tomorrow.

I bugged her so much to read it I can hardly say no now. Note to self: preview books, don’t rely on memory from long ago.

Quotes from Eve

“All they want is money! That’s all they care about!  That’s why I want to buy things from them.” said Eve, while looking through an American Girls catalog.  3/3/14

“I want to be a famous artist so I can make a lot of money and buy lots of cats!” said Eve. Moments later she amended it to “pets” because she wants dogs, bunnies, and hamsters too. 3/2/14

Artie

Eve’s class is studying penguins this month and as a special treat they have a friend named Artie who visits each student. Eve was overjoyed when she found out Artie was coming to spend the weekend with us! We had some errands to do after school, so Artie came along for the ride.

Artie came to the Co-Op with us.

Artie had fun at King Arthur Flour!

Artie and Eve built block towers together.

Artie joined us for dinner wearing a fancy hat and veil.  Artie likes reading Calvin and Hobbes.

At bedtime Artie put on Pjs…

… and shared giggly secrets with Eve.

Artie enjoyed the bedtime stories Eve read him.

image

The next morning Artie got dressed. Eve assured me that Artie likes pink polka dot skirts and flower crowns. :)  Her hair is wild in this picture!

image

Artie came with us to CAOS at the Ava Gallery. Turns out Artie is very creative!

Dear Mrs. Burriss.  This photo was just staged and Artie came into no real contact with messy art supplies.  We took the utmost care of him. :)

image

Later that day Artie made a few phone calls and ran up quite a phone bill! Calls to the Antarctic are expensive!

image

We had a movie night Saturday night, but the kids chose to watch a NOVA episode about genetics instead of a movie. Artie was fascinated!

image

This morning Artie joined us for a playdate and got a sneak peak at a house he’ll be visiting later this month.

image

Four silly kids, a cat, and a penguin. What more do you need for a great playdate!

image

This evening Artie put on Eve’s paint smock and did some more (pretend) painting. Artie also helped Eve with her math homework, but I wasn’t around to take a picture of that.

image

Artie ended the weekend cuddled up with Eve and Alan, reading bedtime stories.

Eve has very much enjoyed her visit with Artie.  She was even in tears (put-upon tears) last night that she loved Artie so much and it would be just too hard to give Artie back.  We had a little conversation about all the other kids in her class who hadn’t had a chance with Artie yet.  She decided that seeing Artie in school each day would be enough.

Final Christmas Cookies

image

Eve remembered this morning that her art teacher wasn’t there the day before Christmas vacation and didn’t get the cookies Eve brought in. She was very concerned that day that her art teacher would have no holiday cookies. :-)  She has art today and insisted on bringing her teacher cookies.  Fortunately I still have a batch of peanut butter cookies in the freezer. I think her teacher will be surprised!

Friday folder

image

I love the Friday folder. :-)  This is a picture Eve drew of the little in their room.  I love that she drew them in bed (green smiley faces) and that she drew their comforters (princess on her bed).  Notice her name? She has developed an interest in cursive so I taught her how to write her name.
