Goodbye.

Goodbye swing set. You were loved very much and served us well. You will be missed.

It’s hard to see the baby things moving on. What happened to my babies? Suddenly they’ve been replaced with big kids! All my favorite baby stores and websites are no longer relevant, our baby products are slowing leaving the house… sigh. Let’s hope that new swing set gets here soon!!

March of Dimes walk

We did the March of Dimes “March for Babies” walk this morning! It was fun! I had gathered a small team and we raised about $700. Thanks all who donated! We had trouble keeping the team together for the walk since we all had kids and walked at different paces, but it was a fun morning anyway. Lex and Eve walked the entire three miles, with the assistance of water and snacks along the way.

Movie night, take two… bust!

Yesterday I decided we could try movie night again. I thought it would be fun and I had a few ideas on how to make it smoother than the first time. Lex came home from school, we had snack and played outside… all was good until it was time to come in. MAJOR meltdown! Lex ended up kicking, screaming, blah! The whole thing lasted about 10 minutes, if that, but he lost movie night. I was bummed because I really wanted to do it, but they both had pretty bad manners all afternoon and then the fight… so that was that.

After Lex got calmed down and in the tub he asked if we could have movie night tonight instead. I told him that if he can keep it together and remember to use good manners all day, perhaps we could try again for Saturday night. That was an agreeable idea to him and then he decided that he needs a reminder. All on his own he decided to write himself a reminder on a Post-It note that he could keep in his pocket. I loved the idea! All his. After bath he asked for Post-It notes. I tried to talk him into a bigger piece of paper, but he insisted the smaller size was preferable, especially in a bright color. While I made dinner he made himself a reminder and tucked it into this pants for the morning.

tired lex

Look at those tired eyes! That was the real problem.

Once or twice today Alan and I have had to give him gentle reminders, such as “Lex, what’s in your pocket?” but other than that he has had a very good day. Especially considering he walked 3+ miles this morning!

I hope we all make it through the day because I’m looking forward to a picnic on the living room floor and Mary Poppins tonight!

You Otter-be reading

Smart Lex
As part of “Screen Turn Off Week” this week, Lex’s school is doing a reading challenge. For each block of time spent reading (15m for the lower grades, 30m for the upper grades) the kids earn an “otter” (their mascot). The class with the most otters by the end of the week earns a special treat. The kid in each individual class with the most otters will also get recognition. Lex has been pretty uninterested in this challenge, but I’ve been writing down the time he reads and he submits it at school each morning. He was telling Alan about it tonight and Alan asked how many otters his class has. 52 so far (tomorrow is the last day). Then Alan asked how many otters Lex personally has. Lex did some counting in his head and came up with 24. 24! That’s almost half the total for the class! I made sure to tell him that he may be receiving some sort of recognition tomorrow. I’ll try to get the final count from him tomorrow and let you know :)

The best part is that he totally doesn’t care about this challenge. His reading habits haven’t changed and he reads because he likes to read. Special prize or not, he likes to read. I love it!

Update – 5/7/11 – Lex came home with a little wooden picture frame to color, his prize for reading the most this week. He also came home with a free book. He said that all seven kids who brought in reading slips this week got a free book. All seven kids! Out of nineteen. Sad.

Funny Lex
At dinner tonight I noticed the variety of fruits and veggies on Lex’s plate and said, “What a beautiful, colorful plate you have Lex. Are you going to eat any of it?” Without hesitation he said, “Sure, I’ll eat the plate!” and leaned over and started chomping playfully on his plate! Laughter ensued! I really wanted a picture because he looked so funny, but he protested. When Alan suggested they pose together Lex thought that was funny enough to warrant a photo. I agree!

Yummy!

Take back your brain!

Lex’s school is celebrating “Screen Turn Off Week” this week. They kicked off the celebration on Friday night with a fun event at school called Brain-o-mania! Lex came home with a paper “brain” hat and they have been talking all week about fun things to do that stimulate the brain. At the Brain-o-mania event they had all sorts of activities set up throughout the school. Arts and crafts, balls and games in the gym, robotics, puzzles and games, challenges, and even real brains! Local college students apparently bring over human and sheep brains every year and the kids can touch them! Lex was talking about that all week and super excited, but when we finally made it to that room at the end of the evening they were out of rubber gloves and Lex seemed to have lost interest anyway. He took a quick glance at the brains then moved on to a build-a-brain 3D puzzle. It was a really fun night and my only complaint, if you can even call it that, is that there was so much to do and not nearly enough time. I felt like I was rushing the kids through the whole place trying to see it all. In the last room we made it to I was talking to a teacher who said that they do basically the same things every year so the kids start to know what to expect and are able to plan their time accordingly. I guess it’s just us kindergarten parents who are still feeling harried :) It was fun though and I’m glad Lex was excited to go. He really loved the robotics stuff and both kids spent a lot of time in the arts and crafts room.

drawing

Our last stop of the evening. They drew flags to add to a banner to be delivered to a Ugandan school that the town has a relationship with.

This week they are earning prizes for amount of time spent reading (Lex is leading his class so far!) and doing lots of other fun activities. Last Saturday I saw a URL in a magazine for a neat looking website (nutrition related) and I asked the kids if they wanted to play with it for a bit. Eve jumped at the idea, but Lex said, “Remember Mom, it’s screen turn off week. I’ll just play with my toys instead.”  So we left the screen off.   :)

Crazy bird

For months I have wanted bird feeders. Specifically I wanted suction cup bird feeders so we could put them right on the window and get a good view of the birds while we sat at the table. We spend a lot of time there! It took me awhile to finally find the right ones (Amazon, of course!) and we were all so excited to put them up and see the first birds start to find them.

Now, about a month later, I think we are being harassed by a crazy bird! It was cute, then it was funny, now it’s just down right weird! I think it is a finch, but we debate about whether it is male or female. I’ve taken more pictures of this bird this week then of both kids combined! Ha!

There are several of these birds around (finches, we think, but please correct me if you know otherwise) and they liked the bird feeder on the dining room window. We tried to move slowly by the window so as not to scare them away. One day we noticed one particular bird sitting in the feeder. Just sitting there. Eating sometimes, but mostly just sitting there. Turns out it was hording the food and preventing other birds from getting any! I let Eve scare it away after that :) But of course it came right back.

chickadee and yellow finch

These two pretty birds snuck in a quick bite while the other finch was away.

Then we started noticing quirky behavior. The bird seemed very interested in the window and it started tapping on the window, all the while making quick flappy motions with it’s wings. Then it started sitting on top of the bird feeder! (I guess I don’t have any pictures of that) We laughed because it would slide off sometimes and desperately flap it’s way back to the top again. Then it started pecking at the living room window with a bird feeder. Sometimes eating, but mostly pecking and bonking into the window.

Yesterday morning I saw this…

scary bird

Terrifying!!!

That is the window WITHOUT the bird feeder! It has no business even being near that window! Today we listened to the silly bird peck at and smack itself against that window for awhile before I started getting creeped out. Eve and I though maybe it wanted to come in and I had to explain to her, many times, why we could not let it in. It also seemed to prefer the window nearest where we were. I thought perhaps it could hear/feel our voices or something. Freaky! This afternoon we lined the interior window ledge with books. That mostly helped but the smallest book was black and the bird ended up confining itself to that small portion of the window and continued to flap against it.

perching bird

Perched on the AC supports. Maybe we need to put in the AC. That would scare the bird away in a hurry!

fluttering bird

It's hard to see in the photo, but here is the bird flapping back and forth on the ledge, banging into the window. This is before we put up the books.

I swapped out the black book with a brightly colored one and went upstairs to put the kids to bed. It’s dark now and all is quiet.

I wanted to leave this post weird and creepy, but while trying to find photos of finches online to see if that is indeed what kind of bird is wigging out at my window, I came across several postings of people talking about yellow finches seeing their reflections in windows and trying to fight the “other bird.” I suspect that’s our problem here. It’s definitely not a yellow finch, but it makes sense that other birds may exhibit the same behaviors. Tomorrow I will take some of their advice and see if we can get rid of this crazy creature… though it may also mean getting rid of the bird feeders, which makes me sad. I’ll have to think on that one for a bit.

Today

A morning with friends…

lots of fun, but no pictures, sorry.

Lex smiled for me!

A good day was had by all and I enjoyed an easy, early bedtime! Hopefully Alan and I can force ourselves into an early bedtime too!

Happy May

Happy May! We turned the calendars this morning and Lex began his birthday countdown.

I have a million blog posts in my head, but sadly I haven’t had time to get them on the blog. As it is, I should be making a grocery list right now so we can head out for a super busy afternoon, but I wanted to say a quick hello :)

I’m not sure why, but suddenly life is busy and I’m totally stressed out trying to keep up. Nothing terribly fun or exciting, but lots going on. More later. I promise! Swing set. Crazy birds. BBQs. Travel journal. Brain-o-mania. New neighbors. Lots going on!

Enjoy the beautiful sunny Sunday.

First trip to the eye doctor… Bust!

Eve had her first eye doctor appointment this morning. I scheduled it for 8:30am so it would fit nicely with the flow of our morning, she would be well rested, not hungry, etc. We have been talking about it for a week or two now. I’ve explained what will happen, no shots, fun pictures, etc. She has been to the office (exact same room even!) once or twice with me. She was fine… until they called her in!

She said all morning that she didn’t want to go but she didn’t fight it. Once we were in the waiting room though, she tucked herself into a corner, clung to the bookshelf, resisted as much as her tiny body could. I carried her into the first examining room with the nurse (I presume) but Eve just buried her head and wouldn’t look up. With a bit of small talk we discovered the nurse was also the mother of Eve’s favorite teacher at school, but even that was not enough to make Eve lift her head and look at the picture of a house.

So the nurse brought us to the actual examining room where I got Eve settled and relaxed again. I even offered her a sweet bribe (lunch at Panera) for cooperation with the doctor. She colored and read books happily until the doctor came in and then buried her face right back into my neck. I sat in the chair, did my best to get her situated on my lap, the doctor was super nice and promised to let her watch some Nemo at the end. Nothing. At one point I even had Eve sitting properly (me holding down her hands) and head up (my hand on her forehead, keeping it up) but she squeezed her eyes shut tight and wouldn’t open them. Not much we can do from there. Sigh.

The doctor was really nice and said it happens sometimes… every few months, with the really little ones, she said. I’m not sure Eve counts as a really little one, but maybe. Anyway, she suggested we try again in a few weeks. When I told Eve it was now or we’d come back in a few weeks, she started wailing! She cried and cried all the way out to the car. Then she got mad me because she didn’t get her lunch at Panera Bread. Funny girl. I wanted to run errands after her appointment but when I mentioned it she started wailing again, so instead we came home and snuggled on the couch and read books for an hour. Then played outside in the beautiful sunshine.

We are going to try again in a few weeks, but if that appointment turns out the same I think I’ll just hold off and try again next year. I can’t imagine 20/30 vision is all that detrimental to a four year old. It was very unusual behavior for her, but I think she must have been nervous, despite my best efforts at prepping her. Guess I’ll have to up my prepping techniques… The Berenstain Bears must have gone to the eye doctor, right? :)
