upside down

I have been trying to come up with a clever caption for this photo all day, but nothing quite right comes to mind. I wanted to post it anyway though, because it's silly. Eve has me seriously beat in the abs deparment! :)

Around 1:30pm this afternoon it was sunny and almost 37° outside. Not the norm for January around here! I suggested a walk to the playground and they LOVED the idea. However, they were both still in pjs, and it turns out they hadn’t had lunch (I was at the gym at lunch time and they told Alan they weren’t hungry), and Eve was working on cleaning up a monster sized mess in her room… so it was 3:15 before we finally got on the road!! A might chillier and darker by then! During that time one of Eve’s classmates had called (her mom, really) and agreed to meet us at the playground so there was no turning back on the plan.

We walked to the playground and discovered they had flooded and frozen the field to create a skating rink! It was pretty bare-bones, lots of breaks and cracks, grass poking through in parts, but impressive nonetheless considering the weather we’ve been having lately. The kids were thrilled and “skated” for awhile.

I brought the RC car along too.

owl eve

Did you know owls can sneaker skate?

lex

The car didn't work so well on the ice.

leaf

There were lots of leaves frozen under the ice.

laying down

I don't know how many times I had to tell those crazy kids not to lay down on the ice!

About 20 minutes later we were all freezing and about to head home when Eve’s friend finally showed up. So we stayed for another hour. It was sooooo cold! We made it half way home before we broke down and called Alan to come rescue us! :) Our hero rushed out in his slippers to save his freezing family (and he did a decent job of not laughing at me for the crazy idea in the first place!)

Warm at home we enjoyed homemade (this morning) Cran-Raspberry White Chocolate Scones (thank you KAF!) and warm beverages. Then some family game time and off to bed. Overall a very nice day! :)

New Years Eve at the bowling alley

I asked the kids a few days ago about what we should do for New Years Eve. Lex reminded me that last year we went cosmic bowling and he suggested maybe we should do that every year. I guess we now have a NYE “thing.” :)

My camera is having issues, ugh!, but here are a few pictures from our rockin’ evening!

Lex took the first game. I thought this picture was better than it is!

Eve won the second game.

Now for the real reason they want to go to the bowling alley.

lex

I think he's a little too big for this ride!

Now Alan and I are going to settle in with some fizzy drinks and a silly movie. Maybe we’ll see the ball drop, maybe not. Happy NYE!

Mad Libs

For some silliness at snack time we got out a Mad Libs book this afternoon that the kids got for Christmas. They have gotten these books once or twice in the past and never shown much interest, but today it clicked! We went through a bunch of them. Most of the time I did the writing and the kids came up with words, but for a few of them Lex did the writing while Eve and I came up with words. It was fun! I think it would be a great car game. I’ll have to remember for future car trips :)

Mad Libs Lex

me-n-eve

Eve got pretty excited thinking up crazy words!

At one point, when asked for an adjective, Eve said, “Love.” I said that’s not an adjective and she said, “‘Love’ means ‘I love you.’ I’m describing you with love.” So sweet!

writing lex

Lex diligently writing the crazy words we thought up.

Little fishes, moving up!

The kids did swimming lessons twice a week this session, our first try at this. I think it was a huge success!! They both learned so much and progressed so quickly! So quickly, in fact, that they only had to do one session at their current level. The both moved up from level 3 to level 4 this time! I’m so proud of them! We are going to do twice a week lessons again in January/February and hopefully everyone keeps having fun! :)

Crazy Saturday

We had a busy day today! I’m exhausted! Alan went to an energy conference all day so the kids and I decided to do some holiday activities. Starting with a Gingerbread Festival! I hear about this every year, but this is the first year we’ve actually made it. People donate fully decorated gingerbread houses that are auctioned off for a local non-profit. There’s also a silent auction, craft booth, and tons of a kids activities. It was fun, but totally chaotic! We bid on one gingerbread house when we first got there and another one at the end, once we saw we’d already lost the first one and I wasn’t willing to bid more than $30 for a gingerbread house! I suspect we didn’t get the second one either or else I think they would have called by now. I also bid on two items from the silent auction… but again, I’m assuming no call means no win. Oh well.

There were some pretty awesome gingerbread houses on display…

This one made me laugh. Occupy Candyland.

This all white one was just amazing!

Decorating gingerbread cookies, donated by KAF. Yum!

It's 10:30am and this is her second holiday cookie of the day! Can you tell?! :)

Holiday story time

After about an hour and a half of that chaos we decided to head to Panera Bread for lunch and a few errands over that way. I’m not sure where my brain was when that decision was made! Saturday in West Leb is never calm, but when you add in the whole holiday thing, it was just more chaos. The line at Panera was out the door, but we waited and luckily it moved quickly. Then we went to Home Depot where they had nothing I wanted and Jo-Ann’s Fabric which I’m super excited is now open and expanded! We got lots of things there and lucked out because the line was insane when we first got to the store, but there was no line at all by the time we got around to checking out. That balances out the Panera line, right?! :)

This is how we roll these days.

Eve was initally mad that she doesn't get to use the kindle in the car too, but she's eventually resigned herself to old fashioned books again (which I think she really prefers anyway!)

Lex found a train set at HD that he really wanted. I told him to write a letter to Santa. He left the store in an existential crisis. :) (just kidding... kind of!)

When we got home were were all EXHAUSTED! I was so tired that no only did I set aside my to-do list (ha! like I’m that organized these days!) and sat down on the couch to read for an hour, but I actually dozed for 15 minutes! I haven’t done that in a very long time. Lex came down from his quiet time and announced that he had four blog posts he wanted to make. :) Late afternoon passed by with some blogging, some crafting (Eve made gingerbread necklaces for the nativity characters), and some dinner. Then bedtime! Yay. Now it’s bedtime for me. We are all looking forward to a DO NOTHING day tomorrow! I hope to read the paper. That’s my big goal :)

Back in the water

Alan and I signed up for a family membership at the aquatic center. Alan has been going to the gym every morning before work, I make it there sometimes, and the kids just started swim lessons again! They were super excited! They are in the same group again, this time with one of Lex’s classmates that they both like. Good times. I’m going to try and swim laps twice a week while they’re in lessons, though today I managed to chat with several parents and barely even look at the chilly lap pool. Oh well, maybe Thursday! :)

Halloween Fun – 2011

Halloween is here again! There are tons of Halloween activities in our area. You could be Halloweening from Thursday-Monday, with multiple activities each day. You could, but we weren’t, of course! This year we went to a Halloween party at Eve’s school yesterday and trick-or-treating today. That’s enough for this family.

The PTO at Eve’s school held a great Halloween party. They had lots of goodies and games and arts & crafts and tons of fun things to do. It was Sunday, mid-afternoon, and almost all of Eve’s class attended. We had a lot of fun.

astronaut lex

Astronaut Lex. Princess Eve would not pose.

together

As I said, she did not want to pose. Despite his best efforts. (Check out his teeth, by the way. Those front two on top are sticking so far out. Both are loose, but one is super loose. It almost looks like he's lost a tooth but really the wiggly ones are just moving sideways. Funny!)

food

First things first, a plate full of goodies. The the little bee in the middle is Eve's friend.

bats

Then we made some paper plate bats. It was a fun project. Lex also made a spider, but I don't seem to have a picture of that.

lex

Lex likes craft projects. He worked hard on his bat and spider.

face painting

Eve got a butterfly painted on her face.

bat

Proud boy with a black bat.

the wall

They had a huge piece of paper up and they were asking everyone to sign it.

pumpkin

Lex worked hard on this too.

cookie painting

While Lex concentrated on just a few projects, Eve tried her hand at everything, including painting blue frosting onto nondescript sugar cookie shapes. She took one bite and left the rest on the table. :)

donuts

Don't all princesses eat powdered donuts off strings? (there were a lot of princesses at the party!)

We ended the afternoon with some pumpkin bowling.

Tonight, after force feeding the children a healthy(ish) dinner, they donned the costumes again for some chilly trick-or-treating. They were both SUPER excited for it this year!

Halloween - 2011 (Posing for the camera was a requirement for trick-or-treating. Eve obeyed.)

all three

Alan went trick-or-treating with them. He was dressed as Johnny Bravo, but I think he looks more like the terminator in this picture :) Alan's bare arms and Lex's helment didn't last long!

We all dug in! :)

waiting

They lasted for about a half hour before coming home. I think they had almost as much fun at home, watching for trick-or-treaters.

eve

Eve loved doling out candy to the trick-or-treaters. This guy took off his mask and started chatting with Lex. I guess they go to school together.

me

Do you like my costume?! :)

Now it is late, my house is asleep, and I am chilly and eating candy. I think I need to go to bed. Happy Halloween!! Tomorrow starts my favorite month (if only it was warmer!) and swimming lessons. Busy, busy. Good thing we have plenty of candy to help us power through!

Sunday afternoon football

football

Lex has taken an interest in football so he and Alan have been tossing the ball around lately. Or, as the kids say, “toss around the old pig skin!” Lex remembered that from one of the Calvin & Hobbes books I put away ages ago. Grampy Don came to visit this weekend and the kids have been super excited to go out and play ball with him. This afternoon was perfect ball playing weather and we all had a blast!

lex

Isn't he cute?!

handoff

Each time Lex catches the ball they do a hand-off.

After awhile Lex got tired and decided to try playing while sitting down.

laying down lex

The color on this is funny but I think it looks neat. I wish his bright blue eyes were open.

on the couch

After running around for awhile we moved the party inside for some football on TV.

A few random pictures…

do you like my picture?

Do you like my picture? There are geese flying south (dark blue Vs), monarch butterflies (brown Vs), wind, clouds, I forget what the light blue Vs are, cars, a tree with falling leaves, a street sign, a sun (I think, just above the street sign), and a stop sign. I love his artwork!

sleeping kids

This is how we found the kids one night last week. Doesn't it look like they were trying to get to each other but fell asleep mid way? Silly sleepers :)

lex's papers

Comments like these are why I love the Friday folder :)

pirate eve

Eve went to a pirate party this weekend (one of three birthday parties my kids attended this weekend!)

sweets

Look at all the sweets options available at this kids party?! Crazy. There was a whole other table of crackers, cheese, fruits, and veggies. All for a mid-afternoon party. Wheee! The options seemed endless.

glasses

"Sunglasses on my glasses?!? That's CRAZY!"

eve

Eve. What more can I say?

my trip

This came home in the Friday folder recently too. :)

apple picking

Eve went apple picking with her class today and I got to chaperon! I was so excited.

apples for applesauce

Apples for applesauce (see the sad outcome below, posted earlier this afternoon)

Four posts in one day and I’m officially caught up! Off the camera anyway! In life, well details are fleeting. My weeks are fleeting. I have a big post-it note on my dayplanner saying “Over scheduled, over tired, over eating!” I’ve started canceling social engagements this week because I can’t keep up. Rough life, eh? This was supposed to be the week I hit lifetime at WW, but that won’t happen. After six weeks of failing at maintenance I’m a few good pounds over my goal weight. Because I’m so busy and don’t have time to take care of me. I should say not MAKING the time to take care of me. Next week will be calm, right? Next week. If I make it so. In the meantime I will grab every lovely moment I’ve got with my little monkeys, with or without the camera. We had a nice afternoon today (applesauce disappointment aside) and I will make sure there are many more such afternoons to come.
