It’s official – I’m a teacher!

Today was a beautiful example of the saying, “The days are long, but the years are short.”  It has been a long, tough at times year and suddenly it’s over.  Well, almost.  Tonight I graduated from UVEI and officially have my Elementary Teaching certification.  I’m certified to teacher K-8 in the great state of New Hampshire.  In the next week or so I’ll receive my license in the mail, then I’ll turn it around and get my VT license.  Then, maybe, I’ll get a job!

Seriously though, the year has flown by.  Fall in fifth, spring in kindergarten.  Both had their pros and cons, and both were great.  I miss my fifth grade buddies and I know I will miss the kindergarteners as well.  They gave me a sweet book today in which each kiddo had drawn a picture of me and them and written a sentence about what they like to do with me or how they will miss me.  It was very sweet and made me feel very happy and loved.  I have two more days with them and then we’re out for the summer.

This evening was the UVEI graduation ceremony.  Alan and the kids came along to continue their steady support of this effort.  They even put on nice cloths and washed their faces.  Hard work for some of them! :)  I put Alan and the kids in charge of photos and they did a great job.

Eve at her finest. :)

Back to school tomorrow for field day… most likely an indoor field day as the weather calls for rain, rain, and more rain.  Lex and Eve had their field day indoors today.

I feel like I should have some eloquent wrap-up for this post, but I don’t.  The culmination to my huge year and I’m off to drink a glass of wine and fold laundry.  Some things don’t change. :)

Notice anything missing?

imageEve lost her first tooth today!  Top, front, left.  She had four pulled, of course, but this is the first one that fell out on it’s own.  It has been wiggly for a long time and she recently started working it hard to get it out.  Today it came out in her bagel and cream cheese.  She licked it clean with her tongue.  She’s so weird.  She’s also SUPER excited for the tooth fairy.  And she’s excited because the one next to it is is also wiggly, so she has already started on her next project. :)

An epic, EPIC birthday bash!

For starters — Happy Birthday Lex!! Nine years old and awesome!!

I’ve been feeling a little low about Lex’s birthday this week. It snuck right up on me and certainty didn’t get the front-of-mind attention it has in the past. Driving home from school Thursday afternoon, I started thinking about getting a head start on his cake for today, but then suddenly remembered that he needed cupcakes for school Friday! I hadn’t even talked to the teacher about it, but I sent her a quick email and started pulling out ingredients. Unfortunately we discovered, in the nick of time, that we had no good cupcake papers. Soo… Lex suggested peanut butter chip brownies, a recipe I had made awhile ago and everyone like. To fancy them up a bit I added chocolate chips as well, and marshmallows on top. They smelled delicious and looked great out of the oven. Unfortunately, when I tried to cut them at 9pm they were a gooey mess! Completely uncutable! I was going to make another batch of regular brownies, but we didn’t have enough ingredients. I was crying, seriously, over my complete lack of birthday preparedness. Alan put the brownies in the freezer and put me to bed.

The next morning I pulled the brownies out of the freezer and was able to cut them, but they were still pretty messy. I still hadn’t heard back from his teacher on sending treats in either. I gave Lex the option of messy brownies on Friday or really awesome cupcakes on Tuesday. He chose the brownies so we packaged them up in individual bags with cute labels and lots of napkins, and sent them to school. Hoping for the best and completely forgetting to take any pictures. Sigh. When he got to me Friday afternoon the first thing he said was, “The brownies were AWESOME!” Whew!

Saturday we spent making and decorating cake, filling goody bags, praying for sunshine, and prepping for a party. Oh yeah, and Eve learned to ride her bike again. Yay!

This morning came, bright and early, and my baby turned NINE! Nine whole years old and handsome as always. He had a few little presents waiting for him on the table.

Nine years old!

I got him an awesome Lego movie t-shirt that has Emmitt on it and says “The Special Has Arrived.” I thought he would love it, but instead he laughed briefly and then discarded it. He refused to wear it today. You never can tell with that boy!

magnet toys

He loved these magnet toys!

Loved them so much he wanted a picture with them. :)

The forecast all week called for varying amounts of rain, but this morning it said clear skies and sunshine all day. Whoo hoo! We did our morning thing, then packed up a party and headed to the skate park for Lex’s birthday party.

This place is awesome. They have a skate park (seen here), a playground, and a big pavilion for parties.

We had a few girls there too. This one forgot her bike, but luckily I packed an extra bike and two scooters. Everyone had a blast!

Hey party people!

Cake time!

cake closeup

The cake was an evolving process. It started with a couple of round cakes and we went from there. Lex had input, I had input, the lack of supplies had input, and we ended up here. It is supposed to look like bike wheels. What do you think?

friends

I like this group of kids. I miss being in their school every day and seeing them all.

presents

Lex got some awesome presents!

Despite my last minute planning the party got rave reviews. One kid said it was the best he’s been to in a long long time, and another kiddo said it was an epic, EPIC party. Can’t beat that. Most important though is that Lex had a blast! Everything went well.

After the party we packed up and headed home. Everyone crashed for a bit. My parents were here and Mandy and Rachel as well. We ordered pizza for dinner, per Lex’s request (though he doesn’t eat the pizza, just the cheesy garlic bread), and enjoyed dinner in the front yard on a beautiful evening.

Happy birthday to my nine year old. My baby who is no longer a baby but a big, strong, handsome, growing boy. I love you with all my heart!

She rides again!

With the confidence provided by knee pads, elbow pads, and protective gloves, Eve worked up the courage to ride her bike again! You may remember that she rode like the wind back when she was five, but for some reason she decided not to ride at all last summer, much to our dismay. All last summer she refused to ride her bike. I think she must have taken a tumble, but nothing too bad. Lex took a pretty bad one early last summer that may have scared her off. I don’t know. She rode her scooter all summer, but wouldn’t touch the bike. This spring she was hesitant but agreed to try again with knee and elbow pads. It took awhile, but we finally bought them and she was thrilled. Today she went out riding and it came right back to her… like riding a bike! After awhile she decided the pads were uncomfortable and she decided to brave it without them. She did fine, of course!

She still has a bit of work to do on stopping. Hopefully she figures that out quickly before tumbling and losing all confidence again!

Happy Birthday Eve!!

Birthday season is upon us again and suddenly baby Eve is a big seven year old!

IMG_1241-001

While most kids are chomping at the bit to be older, Eve carefully reminded us throughout her birthday weekend that she was not seven yet. Even this morning when we were having a little 6:00am celebration, she said, “Well, really I’m not seven yet!” Last night she tried to convince me that you don’t turn the new age until the very end of the day, overnight while you’re asleep the night after your birthday, I think maybe she liked being six. :)

We had a very fun, very busy weekend. On Saturday she had a bunch of friends over for a penguin party. The weather cooperated and we were able to get outside and play after cake. A good time was had by all.

buffet

We had a lovely spread. Penguin cake in the middle, veggies on one side, Goldfish and candy on the other, and blue Jello “water” in the middle. I bet you can guess where the kiddos spent most of their snacking time!

cake

This year, on a whim, I ordered a cake from an awesome lady. I’ve known her since high school and she now does cakes professionally. It turned out beautiful (and delicious)!

picture frames

The kids started the party by making penguin picture frames. Then I took pictures of each of them with Eve, printed them, and put them in the frames.

The boys finished the rolled-up-newspaper-igloo project that I started with the kids a few days ago and ran out of time to finish.

Aren’t they cute?

igloo

Here’s the completed igloo. We were going to put welcome signs on them (this one and the table one on the other side of the room) but we ran out of time for that too.

igools sign

Eve made a sign directing the children to the “igools” downstairs. :)

me and alan

My friend wanted to take a picture of me and Alan. She thought Eve shouldn’t be the only one celebrating today. :) (It’s not a very flattering angle, but I’ll post it anyway.)

Since all the kids were playing in the basement we brought the presents down to open there. I don’t have any great pics though, so you’ll just have to use your imagination. :)

cake

Everyone was VERY excited for cake!

cake laughing

This is me cracking up because Eve blew out the candles before we even finished the first word of the Happy Birthday song. I relit them quickly while we finished singing. :)

silly eve

We were all pretty silly by this point.

sawzall

Just for fun (and to terrify a room full of small children), Alan jumped in with the sawzall running on high when it was time to cut the cake. Grandpa Tom got a video of it that I’ll try to post. It was hysterical and a little scary.

One final picture of the awesome igloo cake before we dug in!

It didn’t last long!

After cake I sent them all outside!

eve sliding

Eve was really happy that the snow stuck around for her birthday this year. She really wanted to play penguins with her friends.

sliding

Penguins love to slide on their bellies!

group shot

Happy little birthday penguins!

After we said goodbye to all our friends the kids took to their corners for a wee bit of downtime. An hour later we packed up and headed to Grandpa’s for a pizza dinner and round two of cake!

more presents

Do they make non-reflective glasses? I might invest in those next time around!

more cake

Mema made a dinner birthday cake. It’s not often you get two cakes in one day!

stable

Eve got a stable and lots of animals to play with.

We got home late and went right to bed. Everyone was beat! Sunday was spent relaxing with family and trying to restore some sense of order to the house. I also spent Sunday baking and decorating cupcakes (more cake!) for school on Monday.

bday presents

For her actual birthday I left two small presents that were beautifully surrounded by flowers from others. She is a lucky little girl.

lex

Lex woke first and eagerly waited for the grand opening.

card

I think she likes her card. :)

book

I got her a Lego book. Basically a comic version of the Lego Movie. Everyone loves it.

shoes

I also got her some sparkly red shoes because how could I not?!

breakfast

Pancakes for breakfasts. Let’s keep the sugar-fest rolling!

cupcakes

One more round of cake. These cuties went to school today. They should each have a penguin on top, but I quickly discovered that the toothpicks don’t fit in the cupcake carrier, so I put a few in for pictures, then took them out and put them all into a baggie. Eve put the penguins on top at school before serving them. We also made a few mini cupcakes and brought them to karate this afternoon.

This afternoon we went to karate and then out to dinner at Panera Bread. Eve’s choice. No surprise there! :) I think she had a pretty awesome 7th birthday weekend. Now let the post-party lull and sugar detox begin!

A winter safari

The kids spent the morning packing for a safari. I’m not sure what prompted the idea, but they were quite busy and diligent at it for a long time. They had a book that had come with Lex’s safari vest and they were following the guidelines in it. They even packed emergency medical supplies (bandaids and neosporin), batteries, a map of the neigbhorhood, and snacks. They decided to look for birds and rocks, so they packed the binoculars and containers of various sizes to collect rocks.

image

When they were all packed up they decided that spring weather was too far away and the safari should take place today! Fortunately it really was spring weather around here and the day was sunny and nearly 40°. They asked for permission to explore the neighborhood and we agreed together on the areas they could explore on their own. I offered to go with them (please, pretty please) but they said they were fine on their own.

image

Once I got past the humor and cuteness of it all, and once they had actually left, I was a nervous wreck! They started next door to invite Parrish along, then went to the cul-de-sac behind the house to invite a few other friends. They ended up as a party of five on safari. I told them they could explore our cul-de-sac or the one right behind our house (that I can see from the kitchen window!) and they had to stay on the road, no woods. Boring mommy, I know. The snowbanks were so high that I could see the tops of their heads when they were walking but as soon as they sat down I lost them.

I also forgot to tell them another safety rule and was nervous about that too. They went to invite one friend and ended up going in for a few minutes while she got her snow clothes on. I’ve met this girl only once or twice and her grandparents as often. I knew the kids were there because I saw them go down the driveway, but then I lost them behind the snowbank and didn’t know if they went in or not. I was kicking myself for forgetting to tell them that rule!

image

All went just fine, of course, and everyone had fun. The kids anyway. I spent the entire time puttering around the kitchen and looking out the window. Good thing there were plenty of kitchen chores to be done. Somehow I was raised by laid-back hippies and ended up a total nervous wreck! This is the first time they’ve gone exploring on their own, so maybe the nerves were somewhat justified. I also barely know two of the houses they went to, not like they were our best friends or trusted neighbors.

Anyway, all is good and the kids loved it! I’m ready for warm weather so I can open the windows and see without snowbanks blocking the view. I’ll be much more relaxed then! :)

Wiggle wiggle

Eve has a loose tooth!  Her very first one.  She’s pretty excited about and and keeps telling me about how it feels.  Often starting with, “I don’t know if this is usual or not, but…” then onto her story.  She is an awesome child.  She also has four molars coming in all at once.  There’s a lot going on in that mouth of hers.

I wonder if that explains the fevers, headaches, and earaches from a few weekends ago…

Riding in style!

The big day finally arrived! Big day in this house anyway, probably no one else cares. For awhile now I’ve known that I had to move the kids, Lex primarily, out of the 5pt harness car seats and into standard booster seats. The big black seats we have were supposed to convert, but when I tried to use them with the shoulder belt I discovered they were damn near impossible to buckle in. There was no way the kids would be able to do it. So we sprung for new boosters, just like what we have in Alan’s car. The kids are pretty excited. They were getting too big for the 5pt harness, especially with winter coats on. When I pulled out the manual to make sure I converted the big black seats properly, I discovered that I should have switched Lex about 15lbs ago. I thought the 5pt harness was safest, but according to the manual he was too heavy for it. Glad we didn’t have an accident.

car seats

Happy riders! They like to put the arm rest down between the seats.

Now they are in boosters in both cars and pretty darn happy about it. We brought a friend home after school and I was able to fit three across in the back seat. Oh, the social opportunities we’ll have now!

This is just a sweet picture from after school today. Unrelated to car seats. :)

reading

This is what they like to do at the end of each school day. Grab a picture book from my 5th grade room and cuddle in the chair and read. Sometimes there is a friend with them. Sometimes the book is an iPad. Always they are cuddly and happy. Today Eve was reading “Boris Ate A Thesaurus” to Lex.

Sleep

I have been so tired this week. The night before last (Thur/Fri) was a terrible sleep. I kept waking up thinking the alarm was going off. At one point the radio started making a weird static noise and woke us both us. Alan was awake off and on as well, so we both kept disrupting each other’s sleep. It was awful. When the alarm finally did go off, for real, at 5am I dragged myself out of bed. Last night, while putting the kids to bed, I had a little conversation with Lex about sleeping late on Saturday mornings. :) I suggested maybe he could try coming downstairs by himself when he wakes up at 6am. We’ve had this conversation in the past and he always rejects the idea immediately, but this time he said, “sure!” Two key changes here: he’s a bit older, of course, and he had a new computer game he loves to play. I think he thought getting up early without me would equal more computer time! :) This morning he got up at 6:25 (which is sleeping late for him!) and went right downstairs. I wasn’t sleeping well anyway, so I heard him get up, then I heard Eve get up, but I stayed in bed and dozed for awhile longer. I got up at 7:15am and found them both happily playing on the computer. It was worth it! Even the post-computer fuss when I told them it was time to shut down and come have breakfast was worth the extra time in bed! :)
