Beautiful day

We had a nice day today. The weather was
sunny, but not too hot. We went outside this morning and had
lunch on the new picnic table. They are so cute and LOVE eating
at the picnic table. To the point that when we go out Lex heads
for the table and immediately asks for a snack. I have to
encourage him to play for awhile before eating, since we
usually just ate before going outside! They both took a great
nap, then we headed to the Montshire for the afternoon. The
outdoor water park is open now and they had a blast! I love the
museum when it’s not too busy :)

What do you think of our new
widescreen picture setting?

Over the
past few days I was able to get pictures from Lex’s birthday
party up on photos.datdec.com.
There are a lot of them, but I didn’t post anywhere near the
total number taken! We have a photo happy family :) They are
also a bit out of order because they came from 3 different
cameras and I am too lazy to go rearrange them into the proper
order. Instead you can see the party unfold three times,
through three points of view :) Sort of. Anyway,
enjoy!

The B word

Several of my friends have had babies
lately (congrats to them, of course!) and I confessed to Alan
last night that I’ve been having baby cravings sometimes
lately. Not often, and not that I want another baby anytime
soon, just that I’ve been thinking about it. Women get these
feelings. Alan says women are nuts :) Anyway, fate or Murphy or
whatever kicked in last night to remind me that I’m really not
in the mood for a newborn just yet! Eve had a fever (randomly
and it was gone by morning) and cried out many times during the
night, and Lex, possibly because of Eve, came into our room 5
or 6 times and crawled up in the bed with me. None of the
wakings kept me up for long (no longer than a diaper change and
Tylenol dosage), but it was a good reminder of life with a
newborn :) Not for me just yet!!

Wednesday, Lex’s 3yr check up

I know I’m a little behind, but we had a
note worthy Wednesday and it’s just taken me a few days to make
note of it :) I took Lex in for his 3yr check up and everything
is fine. I think I’ve mentioned before that I was a bit curious
about his weight and his current eating habits (very limited
menu and doesn’t even eat much of that). He weighed in at 32lbs
(2 1/2 up from his 2yr appointment) and 37″. The doctor said
his height and weight are right where they should be for his
growth curve and there’s nothing to worry about. He’s just
above (weight) and below (height) the 50th percentile. He also
didn’t seem concerned at all about the eating situation. So I’m
no longer concerned either :) Some of Lex’s friends have put on
5-7lbs between 2 and 3yrs, so I was worried the doc would be
worried about Lex’s smaller gain, but I guess since he’s right
on his curve all is well.

After lunch
and an unsuccessful nap attempt we headed out to the
playground, with a quick stop at CVS on the way (Lex has
graduated to chewable floride tablets instead of drops). As I
was checking out at CVS Lex said “mommy, I need to use the
bathroom.” I was psyched and played the toilet-training-toddler
card to get access to the employee only bathrooms (no public
restrooms there). Fortunately it was big and clean so I could
deal with Lex while Eve roamed around. Lex was a little
confused that there was no little potty for him, but sat on the
toilet instead and put lots of pee in there!! Yay Lex! It
hasn’t happened again though, and I’m wondering if he really
knew he needed to pee or if he remembered the last time we were
at CVS when he pooped in his diaper and I didn’t have any clean
diapers so he had to stay in the dirty one until we got home. I
gave him a little speech while changing him, saying that there
are bathrooms everywhere and if we’re out, like at CVS, and he
needs to poop he should tell me so we can use the bathroom
instead of his diaper and risk discomfort and a rash. Blah,
blah, blah. I think he just remembered that, saw were were at
CVS, and made the connection. But whatever, it’s better than
nothing :)

At the playground we met my friend
Diana and her daughters, Sarah and Lauren. The playground had a
really nice sandbox and Eve spent the entire time there. Not
for my lack of trying to move her along. Any time I picked her
up she wailed and tried to dive out of my arms, back into the
sandbox. Lex also managed to get a very big splinter, maybe
from the wood chips all around, I’m not sure. It was probably
1/2″ long and looked huge in his tiny finger. Alan and I had a
gut-wrenching, ear piercing torture session trying to get it
out later that night. I also realized that although I have
several first-aid kits kicking around the car, none had
tweezers.

Other than the splinter
related activities, Wednesday was a lovely day all around
:)

A birthday party for Mr. Independent

We had a fantastic party for Lex this weekend
(if I do say so myself). Lots of family and friends. The
weather was perfect, as it has been for his birthday every year
so far! I was trying to come up with some organized games, but
it was tough because of the age range of the kids and because I
wasn’t really sure who would even be there. Instead we did a
bunch of activity stations, including bubbles, balloon animals
(thanks Julie!), ball pool (the hit of Lex’s 2nd bday party),
face painting, ice cream sandwich making (thanks Ellen!), etc.
The kids basically ran around and played with everything. We
also have the swing set my parents got Lex last year, a big
slide that our neighbor gave us as a hand-me-down, and the new
picnic table from my parents this bday. There was lots for the
kids to do. We also had lots of food, especially considering it
was a 2-4ish party, between lunch and dinner. I have this
not-so-odd need to have lots and lots of food available for any
event :) Alan’s mom made fried chicken and deviled eggs, my mom
made tofu salad, and I made a watermelon bowl fruit salad,
brownies, and other stuff. It was great. Now we will be eating
leftovers for a very long time :) Lex asked for a square cake,
so I made him an alphabet block type cake – 4 square cakes
layered on top of each other, bordered with Twizzlers and
decorated with a frosting “3” on top, “Happy Birthday” on one
side, and “L”, “E”, “X” on the other three sides. It held
together, looked good and tasted excellent! :) Overall I think
everyone had fun. Lex, surprisingly, took a nap and I woke him
up when everyone started arriving and asking for the birthday
boy. Not surprisingly it took him a few minutes to warm up to
the crowd, but then he had a great time.

I also wanted to add a note about Lex’s recent burst of
independence. He’s been dressing himself and wanting to do some
things on his own for awhile, but lately he suddenly wants to
do EVERYTHING for himself. He makes his own snack mix
(Goldfish, Annie’s Bunnies, and dried fruit), pour his own
cereal, pour his own milk!, get his own Zone bars, cup of
water, etc. It’s a little scary, but for the most part he does
pretty well. The first day he asked to make his own snack I
immediately thought “no way!” but was able to control that
impulse and I let him make it (with my oversight and small
assistance) and he did really well. So now I’m trying to let
him do as much as he wants to on his own, within reason and
safety, of course. He even helps with Eve more and more,
feeding her, getting things for her, putting her shoes on for
her, etc. As I’ve said many times before, it’s so amazing to
watch a kid grow and learn and develop into an independent
person. We are very lucky to have this opportunity,
twice!

(This post was interrupted by some thumping and
bumping upstairs. I went up to find Lex with wet PJs and a wet
bed, saying “My bed is all wet. I wanted to see what was in my
cup” (water cup). The big dresser drawer was wide open (he was
trying to get new sheets) and the diaper pail tipped over (he
climbed on it to open the drawer). As I was changing the sheets
he said he needed a new diaper and promptly dropped his diaper
on the floor and headed to the dresser for a new one. I turned
around and saw a poopy diaper laying on the floor and Lex
dashing across the room. Too much independence!! And poor Eve
laying sleepily in her crib wishing we would all just go away.
Note that I started a new bar down the side with Lex quotes. He
says some great stuff sometimes and I often wish I wrote things
down so I could remember them later. So now I will! He’s going
to be very embarrassed by this blog
someday.)

And now the
moment you’ve all been waiting for… Blogger does a terrible
job of putting pics inline, which is why I’ve been throwing
them at the end lately. Makes it easier to add captions too. I
won’t post all 444 pictures here, just a few ;) Here we
go…

Eve
chillin’ in the ball pool before the party got started. Once
Lex fell asleep for his nap we all went outside and set up all
the activity stations, got the balloons in place, food out,
etc.

Drooly
girl!

Eve in
her party dress. I’ve decided 1yr is the most photogenic time.
Kids are so personable and silly and not at all camera shy.
Makes for great pictures.

I
thought it would be fun to get a picture of all of the kids
sitting on the new picnic table. Challenging, but worth it.
What I didn’t expect is that all the kids would settle in
nicely, except the birthday boy!! Rose and Joyce were snapping
awhile (I’ll post the whole series on the photo site soon) and
still we were unable to get a picture without me holding Lex in
place. Oh well, it’s a very nice group shot anyway. Maybe
someday I’ll edit myself out :)

For
weeks Lex has been asking to “play running games at my birthday
party.” And by “running games” he means my modified version of
Red Rover. We weren’t able to get all the kids playing, but I
got these four running pretty fast for awhile. I think it
satisfied Lex’s desire for running games.

Cake
time! It took a group effort to blow out the candles… but
notice who isn’t helping? :)

Mema and
Eve.

Time for
presents! This is the first time that I wasn’t involved in the
unwrapping process with my kids. Rose and Joyce helped Lex,
Barney took notes, and I socialized and kept the rest of the
party going. It was interesting later that night to go through
the gifts and see what he got.

Quick
reading break.

What’s a
party without wrapping paper fights?

One
benefit of outdoor parties. They really get some air, don’t
they?!?

The
party tired Molly right out!

The
party tired Lex right out too! Jim made him a party mix CD, so
Lex spent some time mellowing out, eating a snack and listening
to music.

That’s
one very happy 3yr old!

The next
day in the front yard.

I will try and put all (or at
least lots more) of the photos up on the photos site soon. I
also have to give photo credits to Rosy, Joyce and Barney. My
camera wasn’t working well and most of the pics came from their
cameras (or B using my camera). I love having other people in
charge of photography :) Thanks!!

Happy Birthday Lex!!

Three years ago today I woke up at 5:30 with
labor pains, today it was 5:30 with a crying 3yr old (he fell
out of bed). We cuddled for awhile and got up a 6:00 to start
our day. He is very excited about his cake and party. Here’s a
quick picture of my 3yr old playing with his new game from Aunt
Mandy. Looks very grown up, doesn’t he. Maybe we’ll get a smile
a little later in the day :) Happy Birthday little
man!!

This is from a few days ago. Lex reading to
Eve. She loses interest towards the end and grabs another book,
but he’ll have no part of that. He ends up tackling her on the
floor.

Very excited about what’s in the box.

Here’s a cute conversation between Alan and Lex. Lex was
telling us how nice and quiet it is in the woods and Alan
questions his definition of woods.

A taste of birthday

We’ve been busy little birthday bugs
around here lately; baking, cleaning, shopping, preparing, and
planning. Lex is getting pretty excited and asks each day if
it’s his birthday yet. I made his cake today (early I know, but
it’s so cool and I wanted to have time for revisions if
necessary). He helped and picked icing colors and all. Then we
got a big delivery from FedEx and promptly opened it (fair
game, right Mema??) Lex loves his new table and umbrella, and
of course the box it came in. Thanks Mema and G’Tom. It will be
very handy for the party too. And I suspect we will do a lot of
picnic lunches this summer.

Alan took
today off to help get ready and just have a family day. It was
nice. I even got to sleep in for the first time in forever!
Extra nice! Now I have a few presents to wrap and then I think
I’m calling it a night. Family arrives tomorrow. Yay!!

Here are a few pics to tide you all over until
tomorrow or Sunday :)

Silly
boy in a box.

Cute
girl in a hat.

I have a
series of pictures of Alan and Lex carrying the picnic table
around the house. It amuses me because Alan holding the table
over his head like nothing and Lex was right behind him saying
“oh, this is so heavy! This umbrella is sooo heavy!” The
picture is cute but the memory is best :)

Someone
loves his new present!

I think
everyone loves the new present. Alan says this one looks like
an album cover :)

Baby doll

Eve has taken an interest in her baby dolls
these past few days and has been carrying one or more of them
around and even sleeping with them sometimes. It makes me
wonder if it’s a girl thing or just availability. We didn’t
have dolls when Lex was 13 months, but if we had would he have
gone through the same phase? We have one scary doll (IMO) that,
when squeezed, says “I love you” and makes kissy sounds. Our
daycare toddler used to carry it around all the time and sit on
it at mealtimes, so we’d all be sitting there eating lunch and
all of a sudden we’d hear the doll making kissy noises under
her butt. It cracked me up. Anyway, one day Lex said, “Eve,
that’s the kissy doll” and now whenever she picks it up she
kisses it :)

We had a scary moment this
evening when Eve took a dive off the changing table! Poor baby.
There’s about a 1sq ft space on the floor, surrounded by the
step stool Lex was on, the changing table and the diaper pail.
She managed to go straight down and hit her head right in that
empty spot. I grabbed her before her body fell and hit
anything, but unfortunately just after her head hit. She cried
for a few minutes, but otherwise seems fine. She was walking
and babbling and all, so I’m assuming she’s ok.

Little bird in a tree

My little birds got up at 5:46 this morning –
ridiculously early and probably before the rest of the birds!
We were going to go grocery shopping this morning (I’ve been
saying that for 3 days now) but Eve went down for a nap at
7:30am and slept until 10:30! It was great. Lex and I played,
did some tidying, went outside, played on the swings, did some
weeding, and ended up having a snack in a tree. Well, he had a
snack in a tree anyway :) He said he wanted to sit in a tree,
like a bird. He said he was a black bird, then looked at his
outfit and decided he was actually and blue and white bird :)
Definitely a bird!

Then, for some
strange reason, he took the world’s easiest nap! We’ve gotten
to the point where he gets out of bed repeatedly until I “hold”
him for a few minutes, which results in me being
angry/frustrated and him kicking and screaming. After a few
minutes he settles down and goes to sleep. This has become part
of the bedtime/naptime routine, unfortunately. Last night,
after the screaming, I told him that I really don’t care if he
sleeps right away, he just has to stay in bed. We talked about
some quiet things he could do in bed, like singing himself a
song, or telling doggie about his day. He got right in bed and
that was the last I heard of him. At nap time this morning I
reminded him that he doesn’t have to go to sleep right away,
just stay in bed, and I had him tell me a few quiet things he
could do. I didn’t hear a peep out of him and he didn’t get up
once. I went up 1/2 hour later to check on him and he was sound
asleep! Yay! Probably just a fluke, but I enjoy every easy nap
time I get. Then Eve took a nap 1/2 hour later so I just had a
full hour with no kids! She’s up now though, so I should go be
attentive and what not. Actually, I think we’re going to try
for some grocery shopping this afternoon. I really don’t want
to have to do it Saturday morning!
