Cloth diapers

So its official. I’m switching my kiddos
to cloth diapers. I’m psyched :) I’ve been thinking about it
for awhile now because it is so much cheaper than the
disposables. We spend about $150/mo on diapers for these two
and the other day I spent almost $300 on a complete (I hope!)
set of cloth diapers to see them both through potty training.
Yay!

The idea is scary, but some of my
friends lent me some diapers to try and it’s not really that
bad. The regular, old fashioned prefolds didn’t thrill me. They
are what I wore, minus the pins. Instead of pins they have a
thing called a Snappi that is rubber and has little teeth that
hook to the diaper. Eve wiggled everywhere when I tried those
diaps and I ended up with a funky fold and a sore hand from the
Snappi snapping back on me. However, they also now make these
cool diapers called pocket diapers that are shaped like a
disposable and have a “pocket” down the middle where you put an
absorbent insert. You can use the prefold diapers or anything
else for the insert. I bought a brand called Pocket Changes and
they all come with inserts. When you fold the clean laundry you
put an insert into each diaper, then you’re good to go. When
baby is dirty you take the old one off, throw it in a bag, grab
a new one and away you go. The Pocket Changes have a row of
plastic snaps across the front so you can make them as snug as
necessary. I’ve been using my friends for a week or so now and
they are working really well. I can’t wait to get my own order
here :)

Lex is so adverse to change
these days that I was pretty sure new diapers would kick start
potty training. I was all set to run out of diapers and give
him the option of cloth diapers or underwear, but somehow Alan
got a diaper on him and Lex had decided he likes the new, soft
diapers :) He also likes getting to choose which color diaper
to wear. Funny boy. Eve is fairly indifferent. The only thing
left to figure out is the overnight situation. She is a heavy
wetter, so I’m still experimenting with a good combination of
inserts to keep her dry all night. The options are amazing and
a bit overwhelming.

Anyway, I’m
excited. This post isn’t terribly smooth or coherent, but
neither am I these days, so there you are. Read it or not :)
I’ll post some pictures of them in their cutie new diapers
soon.
