{"id":17158,"date":"2018-10-20T19:13:56","date_gmt":"2018-10-21T00:13:56","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/familyblog.datdec.com\/?p=17158"},"modified":"2018-10-20T19:21:45","modified_gmt":"2018-10-21T00:21:45","slug":"the-little-things","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/familyblog.datdec.com\/?p=17158","title":{"rendered":"The little things"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>When I look at my children, especially around the holidays, I feel like their childhood is going by way too fast!\u00a0 There are wonderful parts to their growing up, but it leaves me in a weird, somewhat lost position.\u00a0 I try to notice the little things and appreciate the way they are growing into kind, capable human beings.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Lex took care of a bug all on his own the other day.\u00a0 It was a little winged thing.\u00a0 Eve shrieked (she&#8217;s dramatic), but Lex grabbed a tissue.\u00a0 When he saw it, he decided to take it outside instead of squishing it.\u00a0 He got a cup and a stiff paper and took care of the bug.\u00a0 It took him two tries, but he didn&#8217;t stop, didn&#8217;t ask for help, and didn&#8217;t even think twice about doing the job.<\/li>\n<li>Eve went to her first school dance.\u00a0 I think she was a little nervous, but she wouldn&#8217;t admit it.\u00a0 It was a Halloween dance and costumes got you a discount at the door, so she put her on her Luna Lovegood outfit.\u00a0 We picked up a few of her friends along the way and they all had a great time.<\/li>\n<li>Picking up her friends last night was the first time I&#8217;ve had passengers in the back seat of my car in a long time!\u00a0 It surprised me to think about.\u00a0 The kids can now stay home alone, so I rarely have both of them with me at the same time.\u00a0 Usually I&#8217;m alone in the car or I have one kid with me in the front seat and the other kid home.\u00a0 When we go out as a family we always take Alan&#8217;s car.\u00a0 I&#8217;ve gone from giant carseats to a largely unused back seat. Weird.<\/li>\n<li>Lex&#8217;s voice has dropped and Eve had acne and a developing body.<\/li>\n<li>Eve is planning a Halloween party on her own (with my $$, of course) and carved a Jack-O-Lantern today, all on her own.<\/li>\n<li>They are both basically the same height as me.\u00a0 The other day Alan was convinced that Lex was taller than me and wanted us to stand back-to-back.\u00a0 Lex took some convincing.\u00a0 I don&#8217;t think he wants to be taller, or to acknowledge it anyway.\u00a0 When I talk to them I&#8217;m looking straight ahead, and when they hug me we do the &#8220;dance&#8221; of arms, who goes over, who goes under.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The list goes on.\u00a0 What happened to these adorable little things?<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_17159\" style=\"width: 385px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/familyblog.datdec.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/IMG_2853.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-17159\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-17159\" src=\"http:\/\/familyblog.datdec.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/IMG_2853-375x500.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"375\" height=\"500\" srcset=\"https:\/\/familyblog.datdec.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/IMG_2853-375x500.jpg 375w, https:\/\/familyblog.datdec.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/IMG_2853-768x1024.jpg 768w, https:\/\/familyblog.datdec.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/IMG_2853-225x300.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 375px) 100vw, 375px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-17159\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><a href=\"https:\/\/familyblog.datdec.com\/?p=2751\">From June, 2010<\/a><\/p><\/div>\n<p>We used to take walks together, splash in puddles, do craft projects, go everywhere together, read stories, snuggle, make presents for teachers and cookies for classmates, and smile for photos.\u00a0 We were like the three amigos.\u00a0 Now it&#8217;s like four adults living in one house together.\u00a0 Not exactly, of course, because they ARE still kids, but they are so independent and self-sufficient and into their own activities.\u00a0 Eve will spend hours up in her room, sewing or crafting.\u00a0 Lex will spend hours on Minecraft, then want to talk about it when he turns the computer off. He&#8217;s rocking his drums these days.\u00a0 I can&#8217;t wait to see him perform with the jazz band.\u00a0 She likes to draw and bake.
