Eve’s 2 month checkup

I took Eve in for her two month checkup today.
No surprises. She’s a healthy little baby. She weighed in at
12lbs 14oz (about a pound and a half more than last month) and
23.5″. I think the doctor said she is in the 90th percentile
for both. I brought up the fact that Eve seems to spit up a ton
(sometimes she seems to spit up more than she nurses!!) and the
doctor said that as long as she is happy/content (she is) and
growing (clearly, she is!) then there is nothing to worry
about. I kind of figured that, but it was good to hear anyway.
We ended the visit with her first round of vaccinations. She
got three shots in the leg and a new oral vaccine for
Rotovirus. She didn’t much care for the oral vaccine, but she
handled the shots like a champ! I was all packed up and
prepared to bolt out of there with fussy toddler and screaming
infant, but they both went easy on me and we all left
peacefully.

Eve has also stared smiling, cooing and gooing a
lot. Sometimes she looks so focused as she “talks” and you
wonder if she’s really trying to convey something important :)
Or just thinking, “hmm… if I move my mouth like this I get an
interesting new sound… oh, look, mommy can make that sound
too.” :)

Eve’s one month appointment

We went in for Eve’s one month check up
today. She’s doing just fine (no surprises there) and weighed
in at 11lbs (that was a surprise!) and 22 inches. I was shocked
by the 11lbs, but when I went back and looked I saw that Lex
was 10lbs 8oz at his one month check up, so I guess 11lbs isn’t
so big. The doctor said she looks great though and to keep up
the good work :)

Holiday update

I had my 28wk checkup today. I think I’m
only 27 1/2 weeks, but close enough. Baby is doing great. The
midwife found its heartbeat immediately and was impressed with
how strong it is. I’ve given up weighing myself since we moved
here, so I was surprised with my weight gain, but whatever. I
just need to be sure to loose it all after this baby! (famous
last words, huh?)

We had a great
holiday. This year Lex understands presents and how to open
them, but doesn’t yet have the expectations of Christmas. I
thought that made for a nice combination. He got lots of toys
and stuff.

I’m pretty sure he woke up
from his nap yesterday about 6 times smarter than he went to
bed too. He suddenly is using question words, counting to 20
(skips a few in the teens, but real close), and speaking in
sentences. It’s weird, but cool. The midwives today were
surprised that he’s only 19 months (even though one of them was
there at his delivery!)

The other
midwife is new (still in training, I think) and she commented
on how neat it must have been to be born on the Farm. I thought
that was funny. I mentioned it with my first pregnancy and I
guess now it’s in my permenant record :) She was gushing about
how Ina May is her inspiration.

One
thing I learned today at my appointment is that the rumor that
2nd babies come faster is very accurate. And it’s accurate per
person, not just on average. They said that since my labor with
Lex was so quick I should make a point to come to the hospital
sooner with the next baby and they would likely admit me
earlier because they will be anticipating a fast delivery.
Cool! Can’t let myself get too excited, but let’s hope it works
out that way :)

Off to bathe the boy
now. Happy New Year to all!

18 months and 23 weeks

Our double appointment this morning went
much better than last time. Lex went in for his 18 month check
up and ended up with a flu shot. Not surprising, he’s a healthy
and very smart boy. He’s up to 31″ and 24.5lbs. He even
counted, unprompted, for the pedi. She was impressed :) She is
very nice too. I’m excited to have found a nice doctor who is
planning on staying in the area for awhile. She even gave me
her email address! The only tiny drawback is that she’s having
a baby (her 2nd) in April, so she’ll be on maternity leave when
my 2nd is tiny. We’ll see how that goes. I’m still happier than
I’ve been in awhile following a pedi appointment.

We then grabbed a snack (love those blueberry
muffins) and went to my 23 week check up. We saw the midwife
who delivered Lex. She was much nicer today than I recall her
being in the delivery room. Her and a midwife in training
measured my belly and listened to the baby’s heartbeat. All
very good and right on schedule. She was impressed with my 12lb
weight gain. I’m trying hard to gain less than I did with Lex,
since I started out higher. I’ll have to go back and check my
old blog to compare. ‘Cause that’s important, ya know. Lex
happily read books and walked around when they examined me. The
silly boy even went up to both of them when they first got
their and shook their hands. :) He’s so funny.

Then I celebrated two good appointments with a
chocolate shake from McD’s. :)

17 months and 18 weeks

Happy 17 month birthday to my big guy. He
celebrated by spending 2 hours at the hospital going with me
from one doctor appointment to another. Fun. I treated him to a
blueberry muffin at the end :)

We had
our 2nd ultrasound today. It was highly annoying. The
technician was professional and polite, but that’s about it.
She told us Lex could stay in the room, but couldn’t walk
around, so Alan had to hold him. That lasted all of about 5
minutes. Lex likes his freedom. So Alan and Lex left to wander
the hospital hallways. I stayed to get abused. Apparently baby
wasn’t in a position the tech could work with, so she kept
poking my lower abdomen with the ultrasound wand in an effort
to get baby in a different position. Baby is apparently camera
shy. She was trying to see the face and baby kept putting its
arm up to block her – probably wasn’t appreciating the pokings
either :) After 1/2 hour (my others all took about 10 minutes),
she told me to stay put (flat on my back, gel all over my
belly), while she ran the report… just in case. Then she
comes in 10 minutes later and says, “Are you seeing the
high-risk doctors?” I say, “No, should I be?” She says, “Just
curious.” and leaves! What the hell! Then she comes back 10
minutes later with the report.

Soo….
I meet up with Alan and Lex and we head to the follow up
appointment with the midwife. Alan has to go to work, so it’s
just Lex and I now. The nurse asked how the ultrasound went, so
I told her it was long, painful, annoying, and apparently they
think I need to see the high-risk doctor. She was concerned and
opened my report right away. Then she gave me the report and
showed me that everything was normal. She left it with me to
read while I waited for the midwife, but I didn’t get to it as
I was feeding Lex. So the midwife comes in a few minutes later
(I love these ladies), scans the report, and also comments on
how everything is great and she has no idea what the tech was
talking about. The she says, “So, she told you you’re having a
little girl?” I must have had a pretty blank look on my face
because I had told the tech we didn’t want to know and I was
pretty sure the tech never even went down there. I said,
“Nooo… she didn’t tell me and I told her we didn’t want to
know.” But there it was, right on the report. Which was ok, but
just a surprise. My midwife was none too pleased because the
tech is supposed to write “parent doesn’t want to know” and not
even check. She left to call the tech and see what was going
on. The midwife thought maybe I had the wrong report or
something! She comes back a few minutes later, happy but
annoyed, and said the tech hit the wrong button and never even
looked down there (like I thought). The tech wasn’t apologetic
or anything, just all matter-of-fact. My midwife apparently
gave her a good talking to about how “hitting the wrong button”
isn’t an acceptable thing to do when dealing with the sex of a
child, neither is asking about high-risk without an
explanation. I guess all reports have a doctor and midwife name
on them (since some insurance companies won’t pay for midwife
services) so the tech was confused by that – hence the
high-risk question.

I’ve officially had
enough ultrasounds for this pregnancy. They are progressively
getting more and more annoying. And I guess we now know that we
may (or may not) be having a girl :)
